Playa de Papaya is a private oceanfront house on the family island of Eleuthera, Bahamas. Eleuthera greets its visitors with pink sand, crystal clear waters, and little traffic. The island is 120 miles long, and offers lots of places to explore, and the locals are very friendly. This is a one of a kind place.
Playa da Papaya comes fully equipped for all of your basic needs. Special features include a wrap-around deck, a waterfront palapas, air-conditioning, and satellite TV. We have a washer and dryer for renters' use downstairs in the garage. All linens are provided, and the kitchen has all basic appliances including a microwave & coffee pot. The front of the property has many fruit trees, that are loaded with papaya, avocado & mango during their peak seasons.
The house is located along the coral rock that extends around the corner from the coveted pink sands of Ten Bay beach. The house shares a secluded 3 acre lot with Casa Amarillo (our families other property, both available for rent), offering privacy for guests and a cove that offers visitors an exquisite view at sunset not to mention watching as the fish & rays swim by. The island offers great fishing, snorkeling, diving trips, kayaking and boating. You can find tour guides easily on Eleuthera!
The Governors Harbour library offers book exchanges and WiFi/internet packages as well.
Eleuthera offers water taxi access to both Harbour Island and/or Spanish Wells. Traveling North to get to either island, you will pass over the Looking Glass bridge. A must stop for great photos of the cliffs and the joining of the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. The house is conveniently located in the middle (the elbow) of the island which makes it convenient for exploring both ends of this 100 mile island. Each community offers unique restaurants and shopping. The Southern end of the island has Tarpum Bay (fresh seafood from the docks), Rock Sound (Blue Hole and nice shopping center), Cape Eleuthera and the pristine Lighthouse Beach (4-wheel drive or a tour guide is recommended for this one) at the southern tip of Eleuthera.
Directions to the house: Travel on Queens Highway, travel 14 miles south of Governor's Harbour airport; roughly 4 miles south of Palmetto Point. After your pass a small sub-station with transformers enclosed in a chain-link fence (on you right), the road to Ten Bay development will be on your right (about 1.5 or less miles). On right, look for sign that has property owners listed. Follow that road for about 1 mile until the road forks at a light pole. Take the left hand fork, up the hill. The property will be on the right at the top of the hill, it has a low stone wall on both sides of the drive way. Just follow the drive straight ahead and Playa de Papaya will be on the left, waterfront.
Rental cars are highly recommended as the closest grocery & restaurants are 4-5 miles away, and the larger selection of stores & other towns are 10+ miles.
The island of Eleuthera offers 3 airports. Governors Harbor (GHB) is in the center of the island and only about a 20 minute drive to our home. We ask that you try to fly into this airport so that our caretaker can meet you upon your arrival and escort you to the house. The other 2 airports are Rock Sound Airport (RSD) at the Southend of the island, and North Eleuthera Airport (ELH) at the North End. Both are about 1 hour away from the house. All 3 airports have some strange schedules, so be sure to look at available flights when you are deciding on what days to book the rental home. Some people have to switch days of the rental to accommodate the flight schedules…we’re totally used to it.
Looking for an extended family-reunion type of vacation? Consider renting Playa de Papaya and Casa Amarillo (#147029) together. They are on adjacent lots, each with a 120 foot ocean frontage. The cost for either property is the same, base rate of $1100/week per house. For $2200 you get two houses with a total of four bedrooms, four bathrooms, and accommodates up to 10 people.
If you want peace, beauty, and relaxation, Eleuthera has it all!
We are also on Facebook.
Playa de Papaya will forever be a special place for me and my now fiance!!! The house isn't anything too special but what is special is the view and cove it sits on. The house does have everything you need from floats, beach chairs, adequate kitchen, bedding/towels, fans, etc. The house was fairly basic but very clean. The one negative was that the master bedroom AC wasn't working which we thought was going to be a huge issue because I'm always hot...turns out it was plenty cool with the living room AC on and a fan. The reason I give this place five stars is due to the view it provides. The double french doors open to the crystal clear Caribbean which is ultimately what you're paying for. They have an awesome (new) deck that wraps around half the house, a nice little patio with shade (great view), and then two more areas near the water that offer more shade (perfect place to relax with a book). They have stairs that go into the water making it easy to get in and out as you please.
We loved the location because it's in central Eleuthera allowing you to really explore both the northern and southern beaches. If you stay here you MUST go to Island Farms located maybe 10 minutes north. Island Farms has fresh bread (get there early), locally grown produce, and much more.
Another reason this place gets 5 stars is due to the owners who are very responsive and more importantly the caretaker Rodney. Rodney is AWESOME! A very sweet man who made our trip even more special. We were able to rent a kayak from him to explore the coves (highly recommended) and were able to rely on him for advice/recommendations. Thanks Rodney!
I rarely leave reviews but felt inclined to promote this place because it surpassed my expectations. I give it my two thumbs up and will definitely be back. Thanks Kugatow family for letting us share your special place :)
Where to begin..... We stayed for nine days at this adorable house. My husband and I went for our honeymoon. We enjoyed every minute of it from waking up to a beautiful sunset every morning, to cooking breakfast with a beautiful view, to my husband picking fresh fruit out of the yard, to going to relax out by the water, ethier finding interesting little treasures to kayaks. There is so much to do. The local beach right next door is beautiful ( ten bay Beach). We mostly cooked at the house but our favorite restaurant was mait and Jenny's a local hangout and also tippys for upscale restaurant. We would suggest shipping your meat to eluthera when going though. (Pack in cooler when checking on luggage)
But all in all there are plenty of activities to enjoy and definitely a once in a lifetime opportunity. But the best time to go would be alittle later in the year around March through September.
Don't even know where to begin...I cannot tell anyone how wonderful this location is and how gorgeous the water is! This was my second visit to Eleuthera and I must say, this last visit was much better due to my accomodations. We had EVERYTHING we needed at the house. Grilled out almost every night. We could view everything from the deck. We saw stingrays, turtles and nursesharks. I walked right down to the water and jumped in, snorkeled, got out of water for some sunbathing and then under the shade for a nice nap. Wake up and do it all over again. The caretaker, Rodney, was a wealth of information, very accomodating and super nice. Rented a car from him....very nice! I will definitely be back ASAP...love it, love it, love it!!! Also, the grocery market we found in Rock Sound was huge (compared to others) and the prices were much more reasonable than Burrows and others in Gov. Harb. Thank you, Carolyn!!!! Can't wait to get back...hopefully, this August :)
For my family and I it was our first trip to Eleuthera, but it won't be our last. This property is a good value for the money. It is not "fancy" by any stretch, but it is a good basic home, and you can't beat the sunset, or the view from the deck. Our goal for the trip was to get away, relax, and explore. Eleuthera is all about getting away, relaxing and exploring. For those purposes, this home is in almost the ideal location, about midway on the island. One of the great highlites, and quite unexpected (but very much appreciated), was the home's caretaker. I am a pilot and flew my own plane to the island, the homes caretaker met us at the Governors Harbour airport as promised, took us to the house, rented us a car, and pointed out some of the "places to go," such as restaurants, and shops. He also answered our questions and made himself available for help during our stay. On our departure, he took us back to the airport, and even helped track down the fuel truck driver who took off on lunch with the keys to the truck needed to fuel our airplane. He stuck around until he was satisfied that we had everything in order to fly off.
Within an hours drive you can get to just about anywhere on the island, from top to bottom. We took a day trip north to the Glass Window Bridge and north Eleuthera. and spent the rest of the time around Governors Harbor and Tarpum Bay. Ten Bay Beach is a short, short drive from this property, and is one of the most spectacular beaches anywhere. Our 4 year old son had to be dragged away from there on several occasions. The water is shallow and warm, perfect for children. Tarpum Bay has fishing boats that come in daily with a fresh catch. A couple of nights we just cooked fresh fish in the kitchen and watched the sun set. The Sunset Inn is a good restaurant with local flare in Governors harbor, but you have to try Mate and Jenny's in Palmetto Point, outstanding pizza that no stateside chain can hold a candle to. Never a wait for seating at any restaurant around this island.
For Pilots: Governors Harbor is a good airport, with an almost constant crosswind, and a long runway. A 253nm leg from Ft. Pierce makes it an easy flight out, very scenic. on 3/24/2011 the AvGas at Governor's harbor was $6.10 (auto gas was $5.60 on the island). This would be a great place for a pilot to bring a family on vacation. See AOPA website for aerodrome particulars.
