The master bedroom suite in this 3BR/3BA handcrafted home is the perfect spot for a relaxing vacation, with lots of privacy and independence in your home away from home! The suite is the only guest room offered. It is in the north wing of the home, separated from the owner's wing by the rest of the house. The owner is single, quiet, and has 2 small dogs, and enjoys sharing the joy and beauty of the home, the neighborhood, and all of Maui with visitors. The owner respects your privacy, giving you as much or as little interaction as you prefer.
The home has all the amenities you need for a relaxing, peaceful stay. It's located in the desirable Launiupoko district, about 5 minutes to downtown Lahaina by car, and its easy to bike or hike all around the surrounding area. This Plantation era-inspired home has teak floors, comfortable furnishings, an amazing oceanside lanai for relaxing and dining, and a wonderful outdoor hot tub with amazing views in all directions.
The Master bedroom suite has a king bed, an extra large dressing room/closet, and a Bali-style bathroom, finished with teak and stone. The step-in shower is huge and has 2 showerheads. The bedroom has a dresser, a comfortable love seat, and a TV with premium cable channels. A glass sliding door steps right out to the huge ocean view lanai, where there is a dining table and a lounging area. You have access to the common kitchen and living areas.

We love this neighborhood! The spacious lots, the amazing views, the peace and quiet - these are the elements of our Maui Shangri-La. We are excited to be able to share this very special property with you.
Jan Hendrix purchased this estate in 2007
The property has amazing unobstructed views. The neighborhood is very upscale, and this house is a super value-oriented offering compared to the mansions surrounding it! This is a vacation spot for 'real people' looking for serenity and relaxation. It is best suited for independent minded travelers. Please check the guest comments to see how many people have loved it here over the years.
The neighborhood has a 7 mile running and walking trail to which the home offers easy access. It's so easy to visit all of Maui from this location. It's about 2 miles to Lahaina, so having an elegant dinner in Lahaina is as easy as can be.
We are old friends having a big reunion here on Maui. Doing everything, eating and playing everywhere. We stayed in both cottages and had a blast! We watched the most beautiful sunsets every night, we lingered on the deck until well after sunset to enjoy the spectrum of beautiful colors changing through with the light. The best part of our trip was spending time together and sharing memories. I loved the week we spent here! Your cottage is in a wonderful location. We had a truly relaxing vacation, and thanks for the wonderful home!
We stayed at the Makila Plantation home this spring. The home is idyllic and the setting provides exceptional views of the ocean in front and mountains behind. Everything you need is on the property and the suite is luxurious and spacious. With a huge lanai outside the door and prevailing breezes it's comfortable and relaxing. Jan is always available while being low profile and Kiwi her Welsh terrier entertained us in her role as surrogate pup.
If you don't want to battle with crowded resorts at half of what the resorts charge while enjoying privacy and comfort, Makila Plantation Home is a no brainer.
There are countless vacation rentals on Maui. Most are generic condos crowded together. Fine if you like anonymous or really need to be on the beach. But if you want to experience what it is like to live on a Hawaiian estate off the tourist path, Makila house is a great option. It is technically as advertised: master bedroom suite in private home. And the suite is really big and beautiful with a huge shower as shown in the pictures. However, what you really get is use of a large, very well equipped home with gorgeous hardwood floors. You access the covered porch with dining and sitting areas directly from your room. It is way, way bigger and nicer than any condo balcony with a great views to the ocean, which is about a mile away. The neighbors are mostly multi-million dollar homes, set like Makila on several acres. There is an excellent, easy walking and bike trail right at the edge of the property. True, you really need a car to get to the beach. But there are many beaches on Maui and most people want to visit more than one, so this isn't onerous. What you get in exchange is a vacation home with no traffic and no noise other than birds.
We have stayed at many VRBO properties and, in the past, rented on Maui for long periods. But this was our first in a suite shared with the owner living in the house. We like privacy and we were a bit nervous about this. Our fears were needless. Our host, Jan, could not have been nicer. She was there if you needed her or wanted to talk, but never obtrusive or, for the most part, even visible.
All in all, a great choice.
This reviewer worked in the resort industry for over 25 years and currently stays at vacation rental properties four to six months a year. In other words, we know what good is.
Makila Plantation Home is in on a lovely, large lot in a quiet neighborhood with 180 degree ocean views to the west (incredible sunsets) and 180 degree mountain views to the east. Right below her neighborhood is a lovely, quiet, beach park where we could hang out to read and enjoy the waves coming ashore. Just behind the house is a nice, paved, walking trail, a couple of miles long. The house has a welcoming ambiance and is beautifully furnished. There is a spacious, furnished lanai where we a number of meals. Jan the owner has a wealth of knowledge about Maui and things that visitors might want to do (Maui has a multitude of interesting possibilities, most within short driving distance). She also has a lovely, energetic terrier, KIwi, who is available for play if you ask.
All of this came at a very reasonable daily rate.
if you want a beach out your front door, a crowded swimming pool, cookie cutter rooms, a concierge, etc. this is not the place for you. If instead you are looking for privacy, a home with personality and incredible views, then Makila is the place.
My wife and I stayed at Jan's house during our 1 week honeymoon in Maui. She was such a gracious host. Her plantation house affords great views of the ocean from the back porch and quick access to Lahaina. The property is very clean, and well maintained. I would highly recommend it anyone looking for a 1 week stay in Maui. My wife and I would stay there again if we visited Maui.
My husband and I just returned to Massachusetts from our vacation on Maui. This was our 5th time staying in the Lahaina area, and we definitely found our home away from home at Makila Plantation Home B&B.
MPH is a beautiful property in the West Maui hills with a gorgeous view. It is away from the crowds, but close to everything. Jan’s home is lovely and well maintained inside and out. The B&B suite is magnificent with a huge walk in closet and gorgeous bath with all the amenities. The beautifully decorated suite opens up to a large back porch with comfortable outdoor furnishings.
Every morning we would wake up to the chirping of birds, then make our way to the paved walking trail just outside the house, watching the sun move through the mountains. Upon our return, Jan would have the coffee on and we would grab a cup and sit on the porch overlooking the ocean.
What makes MPH truly special is the way Jan makes to you feel like you belong there, without being intrusive. She opens her home graciously. She accommodates your needs, and she is mindful of your privacy.
We had an awesome time, we will definitely be returning!
We stayed for a week with Jan at her amazing house. The property is absolutely incredible with sweeping hillside views of the ocean in a very quiet neighborhood. Jan made us feel at home the entire time (and we spent many hours relaxing on the Lanai in between outings). The house is minutes from a fantastic public beach park and just down the road (5-10 minutes) to Lahaina. My wife and I would stay here again in a heartbeat if we return to Maui.
Located in a private neighborhood on a hill near historic Lahaina and the resorts of Ka'anapali, this lovely plantation style home on 6 acres offers huge views, and is a wonderful place to really relax and unwind. The location provides easy access to all of Maui. It's a private sanctuary with amazing views and a rural feeling while offering easy access to town and all the best activities of Maui. The home has all the furnishings and equipment you need to be at home here, to relax deeply and enjoy the good life.
