Had a nice stay at the HHC. Pictures are accurate; great breezes and the screened in lanai was perfect and provided quite a sunrise from main bedroom. 4x4 needed as advertised, lots of visitors during stay including donkeys, deer, etc. Solar power not an issue for us, but we went to bed relatively early each night. You do have to go without a couple energy-hungry appliances, such as hair dryers and a microwave, but it's the island and you'll be fine with the gas stove and hats.
My husband and I really enjoyed our week. The cabin is very isolated letting you feel as if you were really alone up on top of the mountain and incredibly open letting you see the view from all of the main floor (kitchen, living and bedroom). We nestled in a great bed, were sung to sleep by the birds and tree frogs, cooled by the breeze off the ocean and awakened by a beautiful sunrise over Hurricane Hole. We cooked great dinners in a very well supplied kitchen and the view from the dining table made you want to linger over your coffee forever. The furnishings are beautiful and the cabin and grounds are vey well maintained. There are beach chairs, snorkel equipment, coolers, etc so you don't need to haul all that stuff over.
But, if you are a "Westin Princess" expecting the pampered spa experience this place is not for you. The road up is steep an rutted--Nancy is serious when she tells you it requires a 4 wheel drive--make that a high clearance 4 wheel drive. The water supply is a cistern--rain runoff from the roof, thus nonpotable. The electricity is solar-charged batteries--plenty of energy for eco-living, not so much if you want perfectly styled hair. The Wi-Fi is from a satellite connection--good enough for basic email, bad enough to encourage you to really disconnect from the world. The entertainment is nature and all that a national park on the ocean can provide--there are no video screens in this place. Just go snorkel off Waterlemon Cay, hike to Ram's Head, read a book on Maho Beach and forget the rest of the world.
A few tips--bring your own food or buy it in St Thomas. There is a Food Market coming from the airport on south road just before the ferry in Red Hook. While the prices are high in St. Thomas, they are higher in St. Johns and the selection is very poor. Expect double the price of pretty much everything from what you pay in the States. The Love City Mini Market, which is 10 min away at the foot of the hill, did have a good selection of reasonably priced wine. Don't bring prepackaged stuff expecting to microwave it--solar doesn't support a microwave, but the kitchen has a great selection of pots, pans and tools (way better than most cabins) and there is a good gas grill so you can whip up a gourmet meal. (The high end restaurants are on the other side of the island so again, if you want the pampered experience, stay at the Westin or Caneel Bay.)
Oh-and leave valuables at home. No real locks in this place.
My experience was flawless. I have nothing negative to report on this amazing place. The owner is awesome and really takes care of her guests. The beds are comfortable and the towels are new and soft. The furniture was nice. I enjoyed the views and went snorkeling everyday to a different beach. The beaches are literally less than 20 minutes away and you just put on your mask and go at it. I have booked my time for next year and the next. I will return to Honeymoon Hikers Cottage as long as I live and it is available to me.
I just want to thank Nancy for sharing her piece of paradise with us. The home and reviews capture everything perfectly EXCEPT for the views... there is nothing quite like the everychanging beautiful scenery of the bays below from sun up to sundown. We are adventurers and usually take the path less traveled and yes the driveway was a bit daunting, but it is true that it becomes part of the adventure and easily navigated after the 2nd time. The owners were on site for a couple days but respected our privacy and in fact assisted with making our stay even more enjoyable. Nancy - the snorkeling will be forever in my memories. Initially we were unprepared for the open concept of the house and no key to lock up when we went away, but the measures you need at home were truly not necessary on this piece of paradise. Cannot wait to come back and next time our son will be joining us :)
We stayed with our two teenage daughters and enjoyed the cottage and the beautiful views. The cottage was as described, and was very comfortable and clean. My kids chose to sleep upstairs on the two couches, as you had to go outside to get to the downstairs bedroom, which was charming enough, but lacked the ambiance of upstairs. Ken the owner was very helpful and pleasant. We had everything we needed for our daily trips to the beach: chairs, a cooler, towels. We brought a suitcase full of non-perishable food with us, and bought groceries at Love City Convienience, right at the bottom of the hill. We snorkeled at 5 beaches in 5 days--awesome! Loved Hanson's Bay. We ate at Aqua Bistro, Skinny Legs and Shipwreck--all different, all good. Only reason for 4 stars vs. 5 is the relative remoteness of the place. The ride up the driveway is an adventure in itself, so not something you want to take on several times a day. Coral Bay is on the quiet side of a quiet island. This is a nice thing, but you run out of things to see and do in town pretty quickly, and Cruz Bay is just far enough that you don't want to haul all the way there and back for dinner. On the plus side, it is still close enough to the fabulous north side beaches, and also close to some quieter and lovely beaches to the south and east. Lots of options for hiking nearby--try Brown Bay and Ram's Head. All in all, a great vacation. Wish we were there now.
My wife and I stayed here for a week – simply fantastic. The peacefulness and the views cannot be beat. The sunrise and sunset views are out of a magazine. A very open floor plan allows you to see the ocean and the mountains in anyplace in the cottage. The sounds you hear from the cottage are never manmade – only the sounds of nature. Cottage is just a short walk to the National Park. We are now lifers to Coral Bay and this lovely cottage.
