|Space||1,200 sq. ft.|

Three rooms (each has at least one very comfortable bed), kitchenette (full-sized refrigerator, microwave, convection oven, coffee pot-NO RANGE in kitchenette but a nice gas grill on deck), 2 full bathrooms, nice deck, private parking and private entrance. This unit is the upstairs of my Cape Cod home.
Located in quiet residential neighborhood. This apartment is the upstairs of a Cape Cod, but has total privacy.
Unit has washer/dryer, and plenty of sheets, towels, kitchen linen, etc. Cleaning supplies, laundry detergent, dish detergent, toilet paper, paper towels, trash bags, etc. furnished.
Many bicycles, two tandem ocean kayaks, one tandem Carolina Keowee kayak, and a canoe, plus all the paddles and life vests. Also includes a 'tag-along' which is a great way for a younger child to safely participate in bike rides... All the comforts of home - everything you need for a quiet getaway!
Roanoke Island is located in the sound, west of the barrier islands of the Outer Banks. It is away from the hustle, bustle and traffic that are often associated with the more 'touristy' part of the Outer Banks.
The area offers two national wildlife refuges within a half-hour, Cape Hatteras National Seashore, and a wide assortment of water and land related recreational opportunities.
Roanoke Island is traversed by a beautiful bicycle path that runs along the Roanoke Island Corrider. From the 'bike path', visitors may reach all the historic, cultural, and natural spots of the island, including the North Carolina Aquarium, The Lost Colony, Elizabethan Gardens, Roanoke Island Festival Park, public boat ramps and swimming areas, and great places to fish, bird, or just watch the sun set.
For explorers, there are great day trips to state parks, private preserves, or other national wildlife refuges! Manteo is the ideal place to plan a host of day trips throughout eastern North Carolina.
This rental is my opportunity to share the things I love about living on Roanoke Island. I had no clue what to charge or how to handle the entire 'venture' - so I am winging it this first year. Any advice or comments you might offer, I would certainly appreciate!
Things to See and Do on The Outer Banks:
You know what they say about real estate... the three most important things are location, location, and location!
- The Beach - Nags Head beaches and Cape Hatteras National Seashore are just a ten minute drive. The apartment includes beach chairs, boogie boards, and Ocean Kayaks (great for the ocean).
- Roanoke Island - Roanoke Island offers so much, I am always amazed that anyone ever leaves it (I seldom do...). The North Carolina Aquarium, Roanoke Island Festival Park, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, the Elizabethan Gardens, the Lost Colony, and downtown Manteo are incredible spots you will not want to miss.
My house is right off the Bike Path (about 100 yards) - and we live on a private, dead-end road (only five houses on the road). All the places I just mentioned are no more than a ten-minute bike ride from the apartment - and I furnish the bikes!
- Paddling Spots - Everywhere from the ocean to the sound and all kinds of bays, creeks, canals, and rivers. I provide lots of information about places to paddle on Alligator River and Pea Island National Wildlife Refuges and all around the Outer Banks.
- Take a Walk on the Wild Side!
Hatteras Island, about 30 minutes away by car, offers wonderfully pristine beaches and Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. Pea Island has a sound access at New Inlet that's ideal for putting in kayaks or canoes to paddle in the sound.
There is a great little Visitor Center, two very nice wildlife trails, and the beaches are out-of-this-world. Pea Island offers the nicest beaches on the Outer Banks.
Roanoke Island has a number of places to paddle, including all around the Elizabeth II (the replica of the ship the first English came over on... in Shallowbag Bay in downtown Manteo. You could even take a long day and paddle completely around Roanoke Island!
Dare County Mainland offers a number of adventures... paddling, walking, driving... Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge has 15 miles of color-coded paddling trails... the trail is about 30 minutes from my door! The Refuge also has a black bear population - and you can actually predictably see bears in the wild!
When I found myself an "empty nester" and almost ready to retire from a 30-year career with national wildlife refuges, I decided to use some of the empty space in my home to share some of the loves of my life with others... So, I added a few outside staircases, built a few walls, and put up an "open for business" sign. The first couple of seasons have been great fun! I've met a lot of wonderful folks, learned a few things that work... and a few that don't.
I have been so blessed to live on Roanoke Island (we're the part of the Outer Banks that has real grass!) for almost 30 years. And, I believe there's no place like it!
This is NOT a bed and breakfast experience (though several have described it as a bed and breakfast without the 'expensive breakfast'!). It is family-operated, and it's my attempt to share the things I love - especially to folks who might not otherwise be able to visit the area. I offer apartments for rent with full baths and private entrances. Both have kitchens/kitchenettes; both have balconies/decks. The unit with a kitchenette (without a range) has a nice grill with a side burner. Both come with outdoor recreational equipment, including canoes, kayaks, bicycles, beach chairs, umbrellas, etc. Both include linens, washer/dryer, and offer a peaceful break from the hectic pace of the beach-- while providing easy access to all the beach offerings - only 10 minutes away.
My guests repeatedly say, "This is the first time I've come to the Outer Banks and not stayed on the beach.... and I'll never stay on the beach again!!"
My prices are appreciably lower than beach prices. And, you'll love the peaceful atmosphere! Please ask all the questions you like.... Contact me any time!
Bonnie Strawser purchased this apartment in 2001

We had a wonderful experience staying in Bonnie's rental in Manteo from August 5th-13th, 2016! This was our last escape before two of our three daughters left for college and we all truly enjoyed ourselves- even brought along one of their grandmothers. Plenty of extras available, such as bikes, kayaks, and beach equipment- which helped to reduce our packing quite a bit. Kitchen space was manageable and we were able to cook most of our meals in the apartment. Bonnie was very helpful with directions and giving advice on where to go for day or evening adventures.
Loved the location! Conveniently located to the Outerbanks without all the hustle and bustle. Enjoyed the islands bike path and the downtown area is quaint and a well kept secret from the crowds. Thank you for a memorable vacation!
Bonnie is very willing to resolve any issues you might have. You need to let her know if you have problems; you should call her as she does not intrude on your time. We found she liked to use text messaging, so letting her have your cell phone number is important and you should check your phone regularly.
Being dependent on the previous renters for the condition of the space may cause variation in your experience. It is a do-it-yourself place, where you clean up after yourself and the next person gets what you left behind. The facilities are a bit dated and miscellaneous. We appreciated the dish tv in every room and internet connectivity throughout.
The kitchen is very small and as it rained most days, we couldn't use the outside space for food preparation. There are plenty of dishes and silverware and glasses, but very little room for cutting things up or putting things together. There was a good deal of electric cooking equipment (microwave, toaster oven, electric skillet, crock pot, etc.) which took up much of the available space. There are beds for 12 people in 3 rooms. We were only 3 people and that made it work for us. I would have liked to have another table rather than so many beds. (There were tv tray tables, but they weren't sturdy enough for using a computer or big enough to put together a puzzle.)
I appreciated Bonnie's tolerance for our dog as not everyone is willing to accept a dog. The dog is elderly and short so the 21 steps down to the ground were a challenge for her, especially when they were wet and slippery.
I was glad we were driving a car with a high clearance as the road is quite full of potholes. Nonetheless, we were able to ride bikes at some point most mornings and appreciated the variety of vehicles available, especially the adult trike as my partner has balance issues. We aren't strong enough to lift the kayak onto the roof of the car or off the rack where they are stored.
Manteo is a delightful small village and access to the ocean beaches further east is relatively easy. We enjoyed swimming at the national seashore. It was good to be where we could have these advantages without having to run the gauntlet of shopping and eating places that parallels the beach.
We had a few good meals nearby. If you want breakfast out, go to TL's where the locals go. We also enjoyed dinner at the Lone Cedar and lunch at Blue Water but both are rather pricey.
The house was very spacious and close to activities. Great town. Excellent bike trails. We loved it.
This was my family's first time visiting OBX and we could not have been happier with the rental, it was like having your own private tree house! It had three big bedrooms that allowed us all to have a private place to be. Bonnie was more then welcoming and accommodating to our needs. We took full advantage of the bikes and canoe that she had available for vacationers. I don't have anything negative to say about our trip.
Overall I had a positive experience with this stay. Bonnie is very helpful, she confirmed our reservation quickly and even provided a pack and play and high chair for our infant son. Having access to the bikes was nice, the road meets up with a paved trail that makes it very easy to get around the island. As mentioned in previous reviews the dryer is very poor quality, it takes a significant amount of time to dry. This rental doesn't have adequate outdoor areas in my opinion, the deck is small, its enough to grill but not really much if you are looking to hang out at the house. Also the way it is set up there isn't much for a lounge area, there is a small couch in the living room and a dining room table but if you are looking for a rental to be able to hang out in this would probably isn't the best choice. The kitchenette is very small, there's no prep space within the kitchenette itself. It is furnished with a variety of small appliances however (crock pot, plug in griddle, toaster oven, toaster, coffee pot). We were able to bring our two dogs with us no issues. Overall its a good location, Roanoke Island has a lot to explore within walking or biking distance, and you can easily drive to the beach or up to Kitty Hawk and other attractions.
My family of 4 (hubby, kids 4 &6 yrs, and I) stayed at this rental for a week in July. It was such a fantastic deal. Here are the pros:
*LOTS of space. We originally had planned for some relatives to travel with us, but they flaked out on us so it was just us four. We didn't even use the back bedroom with the most beds. I loved that my kids had their own room, beds, TV, and bathroom. (They slept on the double futon and twin bed in the room with the washer and dryer.) Plenty of towels were provided, too.
*Outdoor equipment - We used the beach gear. We kept chairs and umbrellas in our car all week. Bonnie even let us use her personal ice chest cooler. We also used the bikes one day. There are PLENTY of adult bikes to choose from. My son refused to use the bike that fit him best because it was a girl bike. So, we used the tandem and one of the tag alongs. They were a little rusty, and the pedal fell off the tag along twice while riding. It screwed back on, so it wasn't a huge deal though it did scare my daughter.
*Little kitchen - There are plates and utensils and everything except a range. We loved that we could have fruit and toast and such.
*The owner - Bonnie was easy to deal with and very accommodating.
Here are some things you should know when considering the property:
*Location: It is easy to find, and Manteo is a good central location for exploring the OBX. However, this house is on a bumpy dirt road, and the first house you pass on the left looks abandoned. Not pretty. Manteo a different feel than the rest of the OBX. It is NOT a beach town at all, so don't expect that kind of atmosphere.
*Beds - The queen beds in the rental are not that comfortable. (The twin and the futon were fine.) The one we used in the room in which you enter was so soft it sank deeply when you got on it, and it made a lot of noise if you moved at all.
*The washer and dyer are what you expect for being in an inexpensive place. It takes a really long time to do a load; the dryer in particular takes forever to dry towels. So, you got to plan to do your loads with that in mind.
Having said that, I would recommend this rental to anyone who wants to explore the OBX and have a good value place to stay in. Last year we stayed in a budget hotel near the beach. I liked this place better since it had a LOT more room, the washer & dryer, and the beach gear.
