Elkader really is an amazing little town with lots to offer. We have a traditional mid-western family style restaurant, a sports bar, pizza parlor, Irish Pub, Algerian-American restaurant with specialty imported beers, Deb's Brewtopia, an award-winning local brewer as well as a coffee house and renowned local bakery. There is tons of antiquing and gift shopping to be had. And the grocery store downtown is the oldest family-run grocery in Iowa. At the top of town you will find the Opera House where you may be able to catch a performance from our local Opera House Players. Across the street is the public library which overlooks the Turkey river and the waterfall created by the old hydro-electric dam. There are several art galleries to visit.
Founder's park at the south end of town is the launching point for canoe/kayak trips down to the Historic Motor Mill site. During the warm season there is an outfitters in town who can set you up for a float. There is a nice walking/biking trail that follows the river southward out of town.
The Founder's park has children's play area as well as a dog park, soccer fields and a bandstand. It is the location of several events during the year including Sweet Corn Days, Music and Monarchs, and Art in the Park as well as summer Saturday farmer's market.
If you are a white-water play boat kayaker there is an engineered wave for surfing and tricks right next to the park.
The town recently completed the first season of public art murals to be continued and expanded each year.
Elkader is the home of several nationally known authors and artists including Art Geisert, Don Harstad, and your host, Adam Jackson Pollock. I'm sure I have forgotten something here, but I will leave that for you to discover.
