About Ward & Paula Smith

I have been surfing since 1961 and still surf about 200 days per year. I retired from Santa Cruz City Schools in June of 2010. I like to surf, read, garden, and work on projects on the 10 ares where I live in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Paula is also retired and likes reading, a variety of crafts, walking, and the lounging around the tropics (which works for me). We both love to travel.

Why Ward & Paula Smith chose Princeville

We love the North Shore of Kauai which is amazingly green, littered with spectacular waterfalls, blessed with a slow pace, and still somewhat rural. It also has some of the best surf spots and beaches in the world. We were looking for a quiet and peaceful condo on the North Shore within walking distance of the beach and a short jaunt to a variety of surf spots. We also appreciate that is is less than 40 miles from the airport and the town of Lihue.

What makes this condo unique

Our condo is in the back of our small complex off of the street. We enjoy sitting on our peaceful lanai with beautiful views of the golf course in the foreground and mountains in the background. Fifteen feet from our lanai, there is a dirt, tree-lined pathway that leads to a relatively secluded beach which we can walk to in about 5 minutes. We can also walk to Princeville shopping center in about 10 minutes and drive to Hanalei bay in less than 10 minutes. We often hang around the lovely pool located 50 feet from the front door of our condo. On Friday afternoons we often drive 5 minutes to the Hanalei Bay Resort to listen to Hawaiian music during happy hour.

Very nice place

  • 4 of 5

This is a nice property and a very nice condo. Very quiet and peaceful, with lovely foliage, a nice pool and a minimal but functional mini-kitchen. Good bed. No air conditioning but you don't really need it on the north shore of Kauai. A few bugs, but that's to be expected in the tropics. I think it's a very good value for what the owners are charging, and the north shore of Kauai is probably one of the most peaceful and laid back areas in all of Hawaii. If you want cosmopolitan action go somewhere else. If you can appreciate quiet beauty and the genuine aloha spirit, this is a great place.

Exactly as advertised

  • 5 of 5

This place is just as listed. It is small, but clean and comfortable. The bathroom is nice and spacious. View outside is nice. You can take a short walk to a few restaurants and the grocery store. For active guests, the beach is a short walk and hike down a trail.

Fantastic accomodations in Princeville

  • 5 of 5

I can't tell you how much I enjoyed stay here! THE condo had everything I could possibly need and more. I so appreciate the beach towels, chairs, mats etc..

It was a great location and offered privacy and quiet (except for the roosters, but they are everywhere). Thanks again for everything! I will be back for sure.

Will not stay here again

  • 2 of 5

We loved Kauai, our favorite island infact! As for our stay in this place, you will definitely be able to find a better place for this price point. I have stayed in many short-term rentals and loved the experience. First off, the hosts were demanding payments before they were even due. They kept asking and asking before the agreed payment schedule, which was annoying.

When we arrived, I checked out the place. There were ants in the bathroom sink where we are supposed to clean our dishes. The bed sheets looked and felt really really old. The drawers had garbage in them. It was a place we didn't want to stay in, so we spent as little time possible there. The positives about this place - the few appliances they had, worked fine and they had clean towels. I will definitely come back to Kauai but not stay here.

Owner's Response: This is a surprise to us and as you can see this is our worst review. The reminders to pay are not sent by us. That is a service that VRBO provides for the owner. As far as the ants, they can be a problem. We generally stay for 2 months and we have spent as long as a week to get rid of them. We have never had a complaint about the sheets and I would like to know what garbage was left in a drawer. The sad thing is that these guests never even bothered to contact us. We probably could have solved all of their problems with a little bit of communication. We always want to be contacted if there are any problems.

We can certainly say our stay was over what we would have imagined! The condo stayed cool throughout the night and gave us a true authentic Hawaiian feel! very cute, very comfy! Perfect for the two of us! Had zero issues with the surrounding neighbors and all in general! We would certainly take up this opportunity again!

Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

I really loved the condo. It was perfect for 2 people and I loved the location right on the north shore pretty close to a few different places we went. It had everything we needed for the week and we really enjoyed our stay. I would definitely stay there again!
