About Ron & Darra VanAlstyne
We currently live in Florida, and built this home as our vacation home and future retirement home. We're both originally from "up north" (NY & NJ), and although we enjoy the winter weather in Florida, we've always missed the scenery and seasons of the northeast. Tennessee gives us the benefit of the seasons and the scenery, without the harsh winters!
Ron & Darra VanAlstyne purchased this House in 2003
Why Ron & Darra VanAlstyne chose Spring City
Watts Bar Lake is an amazing place to vacation. The lake is so large, you can spend weeks exploring all the coves and still not see everything. Plus, because of it's size, the lake is never crowded, even on holidays. The home is pretty centrally located, too, for travelers coming from almost anywhere.

Beautiful home and views!
We had a wonderful vacation here! There were 6 of us that stayed. My husband and I, our 2 children ages 10 and 12, plus mother in law and father in law. We stored our boat trailer at Arrowhead Marina after launching at the ramp, as suggested by the information we received by email to review before our stay. It was a very safe way to store the trailer. Flat-landers beware: Clearwater Drive is a narrow road. The driveway to the home is very steep. This wasn't a problem for us; just something we are not used to. The lake house is great! It was very clean and had extra supplies of all sorts in case you forgot something. Everything in the home was in good, working order. We really appreciated the washer and dryer! No laundry to do when we got home was fantastic. The kids took the basement and had their own bathroom. The adults had the bedrooms and bathroom upstairs. The rooms have plenty of storage if you want to put things away. They also have a tv in each bedroom, plus a tv in the living room and family room. Skiing and tubing is perfect on Watts Bar Lake. It is never busy! The fishing was tough, but fishing in August normally is. The boys did catch a couple spotted bass and bluegill off the dock, plus some small mouth and large mouth in the main lake. The upper deck is one of the best places to sit down and read a good book. We spent mornings and evenings out there reading when we weren't hanging by the dock floating. The lower deck was perfect for laying out and soaking up the sun, which we did plenty. The views from the backyard and dock are incredible! This was truly a peaceful and relaxing vacation for our entire family. Thank you for sharing your lake house with us, Ron and Darra. We highly recommend staying here!
We are so glad you enjoyed your stay. We feel that family vacations in the lake are such priceless memories.
We had a party of 12, plenty of room. Very clean and well stocked. Great for jet skiing and loved sand bar island. Two beautiful decks with an awesome view. Spent lots of time floating in tubes enjoying the sun or fishing off the dock. Kids (3 to 14) stayed entertained too!
We were a party of four friends who rented the house for a teachers' retreat. When we arrived, the house was trashed by the previous renters (assuming it was the party of 12 who left an earlier review). The first day was spent cleaning by us and someone who the owners hired (and her boyfriend). We ended up scrubbing the oven and the fridge which hadn't seen a good cleaning in a LONG time. As compensation for the first day being ruined, the owner refunded for one day. The house was OK. The carpets were dirty and worn, the furniture was outdated and wore down. The sofas were outfitted with slipcovers that didn't properly fit. The downstairs bedroom was not cleaned and there were numerous items on the floor and under the bed, including panty liners. We made the best of it and didn't' sweat the small stuff as we were there to enjoy the lake...and it was amazing. We spent the next 4 days floating and enjoying the weather. When it was time to leave, we cleaned up the place including stripping the beds, gathered all of our trash, bagged it and left it in the kitchen for the cleaning staff to remove. We read the information book left for renters which stated we were not to leave the trash in the can outside as raccoons would get in it and provided the address of a local dump. There was no wording ordering people to go to the dump...we assumed it was information for long term renters. Never having been at a place that expected us to haul our own trash out (esp. considering the state it was found in), we were shocked when the owner charged us for $80 for trash removal. When questioned, the owner stated the trash removal policy was in the renter's agreement. Seeing as it was not advertised here, nor written in the renter's book, nor posted anywhere in the house, I strongly suggest you read the fine print of the contract. The owner also accused us of having stained the carpet (not true) but thankfully did not charge us.
I loved the lake and had planned on renting the house again for an entire month next summer but will be renting elsewhere due to the owner's somewhat shady practices.
Interesting review. I'm quite amazed about how your opinion changed after you checked out and found I didn’t fully refund your deposit. I am sorry that the housekeeper was delayed, and the home was not finished being cleaned prior to your arrival. However, your first phone call to me was at 1:30 pm, and the rental agreement stipulates that check-in is not until 4 pm. So, technically, you arrived early. However, to compensate you for any inconvenience, I refunded you for that day's stay. You indicated to me that everything was fine, and that you would just be going out shopping while the housekeeper finished up. At NO time was there any mention of your having to clean the house yourself. The housekeeper even remarked to me later that day how nice and understanding you seemed. In addition, you were impressed enough about the home that you even sent me an email regarding your desire to rent the home again next year!
I have used this housekeeper for many years, and she is thorough and dependable. In fact, many of the reviews of the home compliment on how clean it is. However, your stay was the FIRST time that the housekeeper has complained to me about the condition of the house post-stay. Her exact comments were, "I love cleaning for you, but if those ladies come back I refuse to clean for them." She further elaborated about the stains on the carpet and the overall mess, and sent me a picture of her truck full of trash that she had to haul off. The rental agreement is sent to every renter. In that agreement, it CLEARLY states that each renter is responsible for dropping their trash off at the refuse site. It's not out of the way; you drive right past it when you leave the house. This house is in a very rural area, and doesn’t have local trash pickup. I’m sorry if you didn’t read the rental agreement – it’s only a page long, and the part about the trash is # 5, and it’s even in bold, RED print. I can only ensure that guests receive it; I can’t force them to read it. You obviously didn’t. Your bad, not mine.
So at this time, I guess it’s just best that we agree to disagree on this. I’ve had many, many positive reviews through the years, and many guests who return every year. And, like I said, I’ve never had my housekeeper tell me that she refused to clean for any of my guests on subsequent visits. I will take their words over yours. I hope anyone who reads your review will, too.
Great family getaway
We loved the house. It was perfect for our family vacation. It is one of our favorite places to get away. We loved the area, and can't wait to get back.
Close to home !
There was 9 of us ,and we had plenty of room. 3 kids and 6 adults . The 2 levels in the house was great , My daughter and her family stayed on the lower level ,my husband ,son and girlfriend and myself stayed on the top floor . The house was stocked with everything we need except an ice cream scoop , but it has one now ! LOL The house was very clean, and the sunsets were beautiful !!!! We will go back to the lake house as soon as we can . We had as much fun here as the beach and a whole lot closer . Donna Hawley
Great place to stay
This place is fantastic. Everything is CLEAN..... It is secluded and beautiful, but also close enough to anything you might need. The dock for the boats made it nice for our crew, since we were there fishing. Everyone in our group was impressed, and that's rare. We will be back. Highly recommended !!!
