About Heather Carter

My husband and I live in West Vancouver, BC.

We enjoy many of the outdoor activities on the West Coast such as hiking, running, kayaking, golfing and tennis. We have 3 daughters in their late teens/early twenties and a 5 year old son.

Why Heather Carter chose The Islands

My family has been vacationing on Bowen Island since the 1940's. My grandfather built Shallon in 1950. He believed in restoration and used the hardwood floor from the dancehall for the house. It has had many happy steps on it and still retains a unique, warm patina. In 2008, my husband and I extensively renovated Shallon creating a blend of new comforts combined with some of the original character. Many fond memories are with me from Shallon having visited my grandparents up there regularly. It is a special place and we hope you will book and enjoy it as much as we do. :)

What makes this house unique

We LOVE the quiet. Living in Vancouver the hussle and bussle of city life is all around us. At Shallon we sleep peacefully and happily wake up to the sound of birds. In the summer we hear motor boats go by, but these are soothing summer sounds that we cherish. Our daughters would say they like best spending summer days on the beach tanning, reading and swimming. They walk down to the beach in the morning and spend most of the day there. Our 4 year old son would tell you the best parts are the ferry ride, the rocks to throw in the ocean and watching the deer right below our deck. My husband and I like the change of pace, our retreat master bedroom, baths in the clawfoot tub with a glass of wine, reading books by the fire, hiking up Mt. Gardner, walks around the lake...we all love family pizza nights at Tuscany, the starfish shaped chocolate at CocoCoco West and walking around the labyrinth at Xenia.

Clawfoot bathtub with view, heated bathroom floors, library, board games and puzzles, badminton racquets, private on 1.5 acres, close to beach, very large wrap around deck with incredible view of water and mountains. In the summer (May - Sept.) there is a boat dock at the beach. Great place to relax, read a book and jump in the water! If you do arrive by boat, the dock can be used for pick up and drop off only. Your boat would require and anchor to moor out from the dock.

It's a beautiful house looking out onto the ocean.

  • 5 of 5

I stayed here with some friends for a quiet weekend away. The house was clean and beautiful. There was a wood burning fire place which was lovely and we had everything we needed for a great weekend away. It was a quick walk to the beach and not far from town. I would recommend this house to anyone looking to get away.

Lovely view, quiet, lots of space, very relaxing.

  • 5 of 5

Lovely home. The view although not on the beach was spectacular. Just sitting on the deck was so relaxing. We had deer in the yard a few times so that was an added attraction. The only negative I can say to the owners is that the frying pans were not non stick and they were very hard to clean. We had to soak them and all we cooked was eggs. Also, I would suggest a few spices in the cupboard like garlic and onion powder just to spice up cooking and not having to buy all the spices. Not any big deal. We had a wonderful time on the island and your home made it so much better.

Nice view, not enough kitchen stuff , too curious neighbor

  • 3 of 5

It was our first time visiting Bowen Island and we had a lot of . The house's view was wonderful. The house itself was very old fashion and missing some improvements specially in kitchen area. The kitchen did not have any good condition pan for cooking as well as washing gloves, salt , pepper and paper towel .

The furniture and tables were too old and needed improvement. The TV was also too small , very old and useless.

The most important part was a very curious neighbor who was taking us pictures and probably videos while we were in the balcony. We never had such an experience and it was not OK at all. We even consider calling Police as the neighbor did not stop filming us but we just took that easy because we did not want trouble.

Overall it was a very nice get a way but it could be better if the owner provide more essential supplies.

Owner's Response: Hello Far Rah, Thank you for your thoughtful review and suggestions. We will take a look at our kitchen supplies and update them again! Our cleaners let us know that you may have left a hot pot on one of the chairs and left a heat stain. Also the counter was damaged over the weekend. I am so sorry to hear about the weird neighbor! That is disturbing, we haven't heard anything like that before and we will definitely look into that. We did have some noise complaints about Friday night, we have an older neighbor who said she was kept up by loud music all night. Maybe she thought it was your group. Sorry about the confusion. Thanks again for choosing to stay at Shallon! Colleen

Family vacation

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the cabin for 2 nights and cant say we could have enjoyed our time off better. The place was well equipped for us to make our meals and we enjoyed our meals on the deck outside. I have to say the view was the best part! Our girls enjoyed the beach which was not crowded and just a hike down from the cabin and they were quite kicked to see deer in the backyard. The ferry to the island is short and sweet with amazing photo-ops. I would recommend the property to anyone looking for a quiet time with the option for some adventure as well.

Nearest Point of Interest
Shallon At Eagle Cliff
Nearest Point of Interest
Trail to Eagle Cliff Beach
Car: recommended

Shallon is located in the perfect location on Bowen Island. Just a 5 minute drive to 'the cove' where all the shops are located. Yet, very private with a 'world-away' feel. The vacation home is a short walk to Eagle Cliff beach, a local favourite. There are a number of invigorating walks close to Shallon. The walk around Killarney Lake is one of our favourites. The scenery is magical and varied. If you are interested in getting out on the water - there is Bowen Island Kayak rentals. Kayaking is a spectacular way to explore Bowen.

The golf course provides a feel for the other side of the island. Cleared out with rolling hills, it is quite a treat to play. And if you are into tennis, we have a couple of public courts close by.

The museum, art gallery and library all provide interesting displays for guests who would rather stay inside on a rainy day. Good restaurants are found on Bowen, with one of our favourites being'Tuscany'. For absolutely delicious food - try Miksa in the Cove.

We are happy to act as your personal 'concierge' if you book with us. Helping you select activities would be a pleasure.
