About Matt Gossen

Although we rent our home for much of the summer season, we also enjoy it ourselves a great deal. Our favorite times are definitely in the spring and fall when we get to enjoy the changing seasons. Even in the winter, we are in Union Pier at least twice every month. We simply cannot get enough of this amazing community and all the friends we have made there!

Matt Gossen purchased this house in 2007

Why Matt Gossen chose Southwest

Our home is very centrally located in Harbor Country and we love the easy access to the beach, the dunes, to restaurants, wineries, golf courses, antique stores; really everything that the area has to offer.

Don't miss out on this charming home in Harbor Country!

  • 5 of 5

This home is lovely, clean, well-stocked and spacious. The screened-in porch is fantastic; we enjoyed many insect-free meals, glasses of wine, cups of coffee and games there. The location of the house is great, a short walk to Townline Beach, and an even shorter walk to town where you'll want to devour all of the treats at Black Currant Bakehouse. If you're feeling like an extra indulgence you can stop for gelato on your way home from the beach!

If you're like me you like to be able to sleep well on vacation--you're in luck here! The mattress in the master bedroom is especially firm. :) All of the beds are comfortable with plenty of linens/pillows for reading and staying warm. Bonus - there appears to be new ceiling fans in the bedrooms for those warm Summer nights.

We enjoyed our week immensely and found ourselves opting to stay in/cook because the house was so comfortable.

The owner, Matt, was responsive and great to deal with.

Book here with confidence!

A Little Bit of Heaven in Harbor Country

  • 5 of 5

I rented this property several months before we went and I'd forgotten what it even looked like. It didn't matter because apparently it had been seriously upgraded. When we walked in and saw the gorgeous kitchen, and then wandered through to the massive screened in porch, I knew we'd made a good choice. The first week we had 3 grandchildren and their parents. 4 bedrooms was just perfect for them - the master suite made the parents feel like they were in a fine hotel - until the kids woke up. We stayed in the first floor bedroom and found it to be very quiet. This space is large - with 5 distinct places just on the first floor to enjoy - the back yard deck, the kitchen/family room, the oversized dining room table, the living room and finally that glorious screened in porch!

The owners tell people to bring their own toiletries and beach items. Otherwise the house is stocked with everything from luxurious towels to books to browse and a kitchen lacking nothing. There is a large gas grill on the deck as well as a portable "fire pit" for s'mores. Lots of ceiling fans too.

This spot is about 2 blocks from "downtown" Union Pier and about a 20 minute walk to the beach. We typically drove since there was always a lot to unload. While parking can be tight, there is usually something on the street not too far away. The beach is bounded by private beaches which are guarded on weekends! It can get crowded, so go early to find your spot.

We were also close to blueberry picking in Sawyer and that great downtown too as well as minutes from New Buffalo, the "star" of Harbor Country.

Our host, Matt, was super-responsive to all of our needs and questions. This is a gem of a place and we will be back.

Newly remodeled and still the BEST

  • 5 of 5

This lake house is still the nicest and most comfortable cottage near Lake Michigan. And the newly remodeled rooms are better than ever. Thanks again, Matt, for a great week.

Great House for Family Vacation

  • 5 of 5

This house is perfect for a Lake Michigan family getaway.

The house has four bedrooms, each with a queen bed, three upstairs and one downstairs. The bedrooms are fairly small, but for a vacation house, they were just fine. The master bedroom (upstairs) has an en suite bathroom, with an additional full bathroom upstairs and another full bathroom downstairs. The house has a very large screened in front porch, a large back deck with grill, and modern updated kitchen (the pictures as of July 2017 were not updated).

Public beach access is about a 15-20 minute walk away. The public beach area is rather small, so get there early to stake out a spot. Alternatively, drive 15 minutes on Red Arrow Highway and spend the day at Warren Dunes state park with a HUGE public beach and updated bathrooms and concessions.

Within two blocks of the house are several good restaurants. The Pumpernickel Inn and Nani's Beach Cafe are great for breakfast or lunch (the former of which has gourmet coffee and gelato). There is also a market for milk/eggs/beer, and a bakery serving coffee, donuts, cinnamon rolls, etc.

Two blocks in the other direction are two winery tasting rooms (Round Barn Winery and St. Julian Winery), both of which were worth a tasting. Galien River Park (5 minute drive) had some fun walks or you can rent/bring a kayak and paddle the river for some fun exercise. My wife enjoyed a massage in one of New Buffalo's spas, the kids loved hanging out on the beaches or walking with me to get coffee and donuts in the morning, there were plenty of fantastic family-friendly restaurants both within walking distance and a short drive away, and if antiques are your thing, we saw at least a dozen antique stores.

Matt the owner was very responsive to my questions and a breeze to work with. The family really enjoyed our stay at this house and hope to stay again.

Wonderful stay!

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Good Life. It was our first time in the area and we plan on coming back in the future. Location was great- easy to get around Union Pier (walking or driving). It was also a short drive to New Buffalo and only 20 minutes to Michigan City and 30 minutes to St. Joseph. Went walking every morning to the beach and enjoyed the beautiful scenery. It was an easy walk, but if you have small children it would be best to drive. The house fit all our needs. There were several common areas to socialize on the bottom floor and three bedrooms upstairs for quiet napping. The kitchen and laundry have been updated and is very modern. Overall, we had a wonderful experience!

Surprise - house has been upgraded since pictures!!

  • 4 of 5

My family loved this house. We had 5 adults and 2 children, and there was plenty of space for gathering, as well as finding some alone time.

After walking through a very nice and super convenient "mud room", we walked into the house and straight into the kitchen...which has been seriously upgraded since the photos. It was beautifully done!

Also, the screened-in porch was huge and such a great space to spend time.

Matt was responsive throughout the booking and up through the stay.

Bonuses:

1) Upgraded kitchen - we are foodies, and spent hours in the kitchen each night cooking up delicious meals. The kitchen had everything we could imagine and more, including lots of spices.

2) Some of the first floor furniture had also been upgraded, which was a treat.

3) There is a large TV over the fireplace now

A few things you should know in advance of your stay:

1) the house is on the opposite side of Red Arrow Highway from the beach. It's slightly misleading on the map on HomeAway.com. We could walk in about 12-15 minutes, or drive in 3 (parking was easy since we got there before 11:30 each day). The highway is 4 lanes and there is no stop light at the intersection, and no sidewalk along the road the house is on.

2) there are no beach towels, chairs or toys (we knew this in advance)

3) the W&D was in the basement, and we couldn't figure out how to get access (simply ask in advance if you want to use it)

Thanks for a great stay, Matt!
