Random Scoots is located in Keene, NY, in the heart of the Adirondack High Peaks region. We have offered guided hikes in the region since 2004, and are now offering two cabins for vacation rental - Random Scoots Cabin and Mercy Cabin (see VRBO listing 370114). Whether you are looking for convenient access to the multitude of activities and attractions available in the region or simply want a quiet place to relax and get away from it all, Random Scoots will serve your needs.
Random Scoots Cabin (really a small home!) is over 900 square feet, including the main room (kitchen, dining nook, and living room), 3 bedrooms and 1 full bathroom. The third bedroom can alternatively be used as a large storage room set up to hold plenty of gear.
The bathroom is finished with v-groove pine walls and ceiling, while the remainder of the cabin features 12' wide pine boards on both walls and ceilings, resulting in a warm and charming interior atmosphere very much in keeping with the wooded setting.
Our location, 1/2 mile off Rte 73 on a private road, is accessible yet remarkably quiet. Situated on a wooded property, the grounds around the cabin transition from a well kept lawn to open woods with maintained native ground cover to a managed woodlot, resulting in an open and inviting atmosphere. The location features spectacular views across the valley to Hurricane Mountain and surrounding peaks, with glimpses of Giant and Dix Mountains. Sound effects are provided by the gentle murmur of the Ausable River East Branch in the valley below.
The centerpiece of the region is the Adirondack High Peaks, where hundreds of miles of foot trails provide access to the rugged beauty of the mountain interior. Outdoor activities in the region include hiking, snowshoeing, back-country and cross-country skiing, mountaineering, rock and ice climbing, trail running, wildlife viewing, flat water and whitewater paddling, hunting, fishing... the list goes on and on, limited only by your imagination. For those with less ambitious goals, or on rest days, Lake Placid and the surrounding region offer a multitude of relaxing and interesting attractions and activities. A sampling -
- Lake Placid: Home of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympic Games
- Tupper Lake: The Wild Center (Regional Natural History Museum)
- Blue Mountain Lake: Adirondack Museum (Regional Human/Cultural History Museum)
- Whiteface Mountain: The Olympic mountain is a short 15 mile drive.
It is no wonder that generations of outdoor enthusiasts have been drawn to the rugged beauty of the Adirondack Region. Visionary legislation that established the Adirondack Park in 1892 initiated a tradition of conservation aimed at ensuring that this critical natural resource be preserved. It is incumbent on today's users of the resource to carry on that tradition. We at Random Scoots believe that by responsibly enjoying our public lands today we can ensure that the same opportunities will be available for future generations.
We further believe that development of the intimate and respectful relationship with nature that is so important to our future begins in childhood, and we strive to create a family friendly atmosphere, a comfortable and enjoyable retreat where parents can nurture this relationship in their children. In keeping with that goal our rate structure is designed to encourage couples and families. As a further benefit Random Scoots guide service offers reduced guiding rates to families.

Our stay at Random Scoots - May 4-6
We had a great time, and the cabin was well stocked, maintained and enjoyable + the view towards Giant and Hurricane Mountains was beautiful. We did lose power due to a bad storm (strong winds and rain) - wow!! that came in on Friday evening. Tom was very supportive and quickly came over to make sure we were all right and setup a generator the following day. Monopoly by headlight made the trip even more special for our family. Rocky, our son's dog, enjoyed the grounds and got along with Tom's two dogs. All in all a place we would enjoy going back to. It is isolated and peaceful yet walk-able to downtown Keene and the shops and eating spots.

Comfortable, clean cabin
We enjoyed our stay at the cabin. It was expectionally clean and the towels and bed linens were very nice, high quality. The cabin is simple but has everything you need. It is a good home base location for hiking the High Peaks and visiting Lake Placid. The view and surroundings were great. The only thing we didn’t realize until we got there was how close the owners House was. It wasn’t an issue for us since it was too cold to be outside. But if you were there in the summer and were hanging outside you wouldn’t have any privacy.
When we first listed our property with VRBO ten years ago, one of our concerns was that guests might find the cabin to be too close to our home. As the weeks, months, and years went by we concluded that our concern was unfounded.
The distance between the buildings (about 100 feet) is neither extraordinarily close nor distant. In spring/summer/fall the foliage greatly enhances the separation between the buildings. In the winter season most of the trees have dropped their leaves but, because guests typically do not use the outdoor spaces in winter, this has not been an issue. Additionally, we chose long ago to create our own private outdoor space in a location where our outdoor activities would not interfere with our guests' privacy. For these reasons, we are confident that Random Scoots Cabin will continue to exceed the expectations of 100% of our guests.
Of course we know that no two people are alike, and the day would probably come when a guest would be unhappy with the proximity of the cabin to our home. We sincerely apologize to this guest. And we hope that travelers considering Random Scoots Cabin will contact us to discuss any concerns they may have.
We also will mention that our other cabin, Mercy Cabin (listing #370114), offers greater distance, more trees, and terrain features between it and both our home and Random Scoots Cabin.
My family and I had an absolutely wonderful time at Random Scoots! The cabin was well stocked, cozy and VERY comfortable. Tom was a wonderful "host", and very helpful. We plan to return in the near future. Also, a great location for jumping off to the High Peaks.
Could not have been better :)
This was our fourth stay at Random Scoots and, as always, we had a great time. The cabin is clean and comfortable and is close to all major trailheads. Lake Placid is a short drive and there are numerous restaurants and other conveniences nearby. We’ve already booked our next stay!
We totally enjoyed our stay at Random Scoots and will definitely return again!
Extremely clean and comfortable!
Very nice and comfy-everything we could have asked for in a cabin.
Random Scoots guide service offers guided hikes throughout the region, with special rates for our overnight guests.
