About Ruth Hayward
After traveling the world and living in many countries - Canada, England, France, Italy, India and Brazil, - I discovered the Unesco World Heritage town of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico in 2006 . It was an easy decision to unpack my suitcases and settle down. The Spanish colonial architecture delights my eyes as I walk the cobblestone streets. The sun shines daily and the climate suits me to a T. There is an incredible expat community in this town, many are travelers like myself, artists and writers. San Miguel offers a banquet of cultural activities, live theater, music festivals and art openings. And we have one of the largest English libraries in Latin America. As an avid reader this is a big bonus for me. It took two years to convert my old adobe house with large garden into a guest house with, my own home, a two bedroom villa (181940), a one bedroom casita (181896)and a studio apartment. Renovating and decorating is my passion. The main house, which is my home, is an old adobe hacienda style house. The villa is newly constructed using part of an old construction in the garden and the casita has been converted from a wing of the original house.
Ruth Hayward purchased this House in 2007
Why Ruth Hayward chose Zona Centro
The property's great location and the challenge of rescuing an old neglected place and making it beautiful motivated me to buy. Located in the historic center of town where I wanted to make my own home, and it had potential to renovate part of the old historic construction into comfortable rental accommodations Location, Location, Location. Everything within a few minutes walk away. Yet the large garden in the historical center provides a quiet respite from the busy town.
What makes this House unique
Right in the historical heart of San Miguel, you can be in the Jardin, the main square, in a few minutes. There is no need to have a car since everything is close by. Walk the cobblestone streets, lined with flowers on the way to your favorite restaurant. Magic happens here on a daily basis, and at Casa Mandu you are right in the center of it all, but our garden oasis is the perfect place to relax with a book or just sit and watch the butterflies and hummingbirds flit from flower to flower.

The villa is even more lovely than the photos presented
Ruth gave us warm welcome and introduction to the area with great suggestions as to local activities. Wonderful stay.
We appreciate your kind words. It was lovely having you stay with us
Casa Mandu Casita..... 5 STARS*****
We booked the Casita to celebtrate my mom's 80th birthday in San Miguel De Allende. It was absolutely wonderful! The location was central to the Jardin, restaurants and shops. We felt completely safe and secure....slept with the doors open at night. The garden is beautiful and a nice place to relax with a good book and a glass of wine. Ruth was the perfect hostess. She was always available to answer questions or to give us suggestions on places to shop. Ruffina, the house maid, was so very friendly and willing to help us anytime we needed it.
It was lovely to have your mom and you here for your mother's 80 birthday. Thank you for writing such a nice review. It was especially appropriate that you mentioned feeling safe and secure and slept with the door open. We just had a message from previous guests who were considering returning for their anniversary, but they had heard reports that San Miguel was no longer safe. We sent them your review to reassure that they could enjoy San Miguel again without fear.
The property was exactly what we were looking for. Simple but clean, well equipped, comfortable and quiet. But most of all, the owner of the property was hugely helpful. She walked us around the area and pointed out places to go. She was available for questions and incredibly responsive. She even went above and beyond when i left a good pair of sunglasses behind. She found them and delivered them to a friend who was staying in San Miguel. Couldn't have been nicer.
Casa Mandu, A Sanctuary in San Miguel
Casa Mandu was home base and sanctuary for our family of three for eight nights. Upon entering through the front doors at the street the busyness of San Miguel melted away and we were enveloped by lovely gardens and a peaceful setting. Ruth is an amazing host and went out of her way to help guide us in the particulars of San Miguel. She and Casa Mandu are treasures!
A slice of heaven in San Miguel!
Where to begin? Our ten days at Casa Mandu were perfect, the location could not be better for exploring, our villa surpassed our expectations and the photos can’t capture this beautiful oasis fully. Ruth was a wonderful host, gave us great recommendations on where to dine and organized a driver several times, Juan, who was also great. Rufina, our lovely daily housekeeper, was a delight, as were all the staff we met and the villa and gardens are pristine. We had a fabulous time in San Miguel and can’t wait to return - if you need a piece of paradise in SMA we highly recommend staying here - Thank you, Ruth!!
Thank you so much for the lovely review. It was a pleasure hosting you and we are glad to know you are already thinking of returning to San Miguel!
Magical Casa Mandú!
This was our first time staying at a Home by Owner Property, so we were not sure what to except. Well, let me tell you, it was perfection from the moment we walked through the front door to the hidden tropical oasis and then warmly greeted by Ruth. We stayed in the two bedroom villa and loved the traditional Mexican furnishings and the beautiful colors, which immediately took away any stress I may have brought with me from home. I loved the sound of the soothing fountain and watching the hummingbirds while having my morning coffee on the terrace. Our villa had beautiful flowers, a bowl of fruit, a lovely bottle of wine and of course coffee and tea. Rufina (housekeeper) Luis (gardener) and Manuel (maintenance man) were all very courteous and helpful whenever we needed something or simply had a question.
But let me tell you about Ruth - what an absolute gem and wealth of information of all things SMA and frankly about the world! Yes, she is a veteran host, but she is much more than that..... Ruth has become a friend. She truly cares about her guests and wanted our stay inside and outside the villa to be a memorable one from start to finish. Thank you Ruth! Mary & Charles
Thanks you so much for the lovely review. It was great having you two stay on the property and we look forward to seeing you again when you return in October
