Our "Secret" Paradise on Cape Breton

  • 5 of 5

"In the Gloaming" was a wonderful find, even in the "off season" - we were here for the first 19 days of November and we couldn't have been more pleased. Not only was the house more than comfortable for we three adults but we met such wonderful people who accepted us as part of their community - probably because Marian, the housekeeper, told everybody to make us welcome!!

Tom, the mussel man, was more than generous with mussels and one of our number had no trouble catching enough mackerel to feed us as well of many of the local community. Everything: house, people, scenery, weather treated us wonderfully.

We found the location of the farmhouse perfect, an artisits dream, as we were able to complete many watercolour paintings of the local scenery during our visit.

Thanks to Frank, as owner and Marion as Housekeeper

Family Memories

  • 5 of 5

It's impossible to say how much our stay at "In the Gloaming" meant to us. Englishtown and this lovely home were absolutely wonderful, so much so that no one wanted to come home.

We treasured every moment of our holiday.

Marion, the housekeeper, was a of those amazing people who you feel you've known for many years. Twice we met her husband's boat at the wharf to handpick our lobsters for lunch. (The children tried lobster for the first time and two out of four think it's the best food they've ever eaten!)

Our last morning three bald eagles flew right over the front porch of the house, as if to signal farewell. It was amazing.

Tears came to my eyes as we drove away. It seems as though we were Cape Bretoners at heart all along. The kids are already asking to return next year.

Thank-you for an experience that will remain in our hearts forever.

Best wishes always,

Lisa, Bob, Tyler, Jacob, Megan and Julia

views, walks, peace and quiet

  • 5 of 5

e found this cottage online and I was nervous to know what it would actually be like since it's 1,100 miles away from our home and we were there for two weeks. We couldn't have been happier when we arrived.

The cottage is lovely and old fashioned perched on a hill with great views from the property and lovely local walks. It's the kind of house where the back screen door snaps after you and you can hang your laundry on the line and lie in the sun on the lawn watching the wind dry the clothes.

Inside is charming, with a large kitchen big enough for a table as well as separate dining room. The living room is on the small side but cozy and comfortably furnished. There's even one bedroom downstairs as well as three above with the bathroom.

Englishtown itself is a very quiet place, really not a town except in name. It takes a few minutes to drive from the house for groceries or to a restaurant (we recommend the Lobster Galley which is situated at the bottom of St. Ann's Bay and has amazing views and amazing mussels).

The Englishtown ferry is a quarter mile from the house and once you're across, the Cape Breton highlands are spectacular to explore. There are beaches and numerous hikes, and all kinds of artists selling crafts and teashops along that road.

We liked staying on the home side almost as much since you get the views of the highlands from local walks and the local pebble beaches are lovely. You will be walking on the road, but it's so extremely rural here that cars will not bother you.

We had beautiful weather while we were visiting but I think this part of the world can be foggy too--weather I enjoy, but you should know this isn't the sunny/hot bit of Nova Scotia.

This is also not the area for action, nightlife, or shopping (aside from aforementioned crafts). If you like country walks, views, rocky beaches, fresh mussels, cool breezes and a local legendary giant, this is the place.

We spent two magical weeks here with our very newborn baby (she was 2 weeks old when we arrived). Although we'd been warned not to travel with a tiny baby, it was blissful and I'm glad we ignored all the good advice. Fortunately the house has rocking chairs in the kitchen and upstairs which were perfect retreats for mother and child.

I'd recommend this as a great place for anyone ready for quiet idyll in old fashioned and charming house who is happy to leave strip malls far behind and breathe fresh, quiet air.
