Why Owner chose Alford
We bought Smithy Cottage in 2014. The previous owners had it for over 40 yrs and used it as an escape from city life. It had open fires for heat and candles for light. As tempting as it was to leave it this way we went ahead and installed electricity which gave the cottage lighting, heating and hot water for the first time in its circa 250 yr life. The cottage was the local Smithy for many many years, some of the stonework in the garden is the original workshop. Many generations of the same family are buried in Keig Churchyard. We also installed a new shower room, a new kitchen with integrated appliances and new flooring throughout. A log burner was also installed and heaters in every room. After 11 months we were finally ready for guests in July 2015.

Lovely peaceful stay at a beautiful property. The cottage has been comfortably but tastefully designed.
The whole place was spotless and had everything we could possibly need for our stay.
Lovely location for exploring the area, not far from amenities but the cottage itself perfectly tucked away for peace and quiet.
The owners were super easy to deal with and were easily contactable should we have had any questions.
Our only down side was a very poor week of weather which meant we didnt make the most of the lovely garden - we made the most of the log burner instead!! We just need to go back again 🙂
A perfect country retreat.
We had a lovely week at Smithy Cottage. It was very homely with the log fire. Nice kitchen and very clean. Loved the coffee kettle! The cottage and surrounding area was quiet and peaceful. Great walks nearby. Karen was really welcoming and helpful.
Charming homely cottage
Wonderful little cottage tucked away in the countryside. Peace and quiet abound.
Place is better than the pictures depict!
Cottage is super clean and Karen is a wonderful hostess.
Thank you for such a fabulous review. I’m so glad the weather was kind to you too. Best wishes Karen
Alford cottage was fantastic!
Located just north of Alford, this lovely and newly renovated cottage was charming, cozy, and very well appointed. Situated in the heart of the Aberdeenshire countryside, the cottage was walking distance from an ancient standing stone site and fort. It is close to several historic castles including Huntly Castle and Kildrummy Castle. We spent five days here and loved every minute of our stay.
Thank you for the fabulous review. We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay in Aberdeenshire. I hope you had a good journey home. Many thanks again, Karen
Exactly as described
Very lovely cosy cottage. Great host. Will definitely be back.
Thank you for the great review and the lovely gift. We are so happy you enjoyed your little break. Look forward to seeing you again, best wishes Karen
On driving up to the cottage the first impression is quaint and charming. Tucked away on a beautiful little road with wonderful views, the first reaction is delight. A large parking space has been cleared with a path up to the front door. The lights come on to light your way. There is a lovely peaceful garden with a paved bbq area and I'm sure it would be wonderful in summer. The whole place gives the impression of being very well maintained. Once inside this impression continues. It's beautiful. The little sitting room is cosy and comfortable with a log burner, starter logs and kindling. There are books and board games as well as tv. The stairs go from the sitting room to the two bedrooms which again are nicely furnished and comfortable. The lovely shower room is on the ground floor next to a nicely fitted and well equipped kitchen. The whole cottage is beautifully warm. Last but not least, the welcome basket containing coffee, wine, butter, bread and more was indeed welcome! Thank you, Karen, and I do hope we will return.
Thank you so so much for your lovely review. I am so pleased you enjoyed Christmas at Smithy Cottage. I hope to see you both again soon. Many thanks Karen
