This architect designed split-level cabin, 'Mountain Laurel', is situated on a ridgetop of Hickory Nut Mountain at an elevation of 2900 feet at Gateway Mountain, a gated nature preserve and mountain residential community. The cabin sits on four acres surrounded by a hardwood forest with pastoral valleys and distant mountain views. Quiet surroundings allow the guest to experience the woods and her creatures with no distractions from city and traffic noise. There is a waterfall, a stocked trout pond and 2 lakes in the development.
Conveniently located near Asheville and Black Mountain, Gateway Mountain is an easy drive just 7 miles off I40, which situates you midway between the city of Asheville and the Biltmore and, 15 miles from the resort town of Black Mountain with its quaint antique and gift shops and good selection of restaurants.
'Mountain Laurel' provides a serene environment for a 'get away from it all' experience.
Winter activities: There is skiing, snow boarding and tubing available near Boone NC.
Christmas at the Biltmore is a very special occasion.
Summer activities: July 4th party and fireworks display at Lake Lure. Summer concerts in Black Mountain. The Leaf festival takes place in May and October. Asheville has minor league baseball and the Bele Chere festival, one of the largest outdoor music events in the US.
Tim and I live in the Tampa area and fell in love with the Asheville area when we visited in 2005.
Lynne Desterre purchased this cabin in 2006
Because it's beautiful, quiet and restores peace with every visit.
The views from the deck are ever changing with the weather and the light - we never get tired of it.
We really enjoyed your cabin. It was very nice. My husband saw three deer, that was the highlight of his trip. We loved the ceilings and your granite countertops. There was some beautiful detail. It has a very homey feeling. The only thing I might suggest is maybe some blinds or curtains in the downstairs bedroom. Even though this place is very private, you get the feeling that someone could look in on you at anytime. Thank you for sharing your cabin with us. David and Khiannon
The Mountain Laurel house is a perfect getaway from the city life. It's surrounded by mountains and you will see lots of wild life. We vacationed there Nov 15th-18th and the foliage throughout the community was beautiful. We don't see the tree colors change in Florida, so that was a treat! The house is clean and stocked with all your needs. We went to dinner in neighboring town, Black Mountain? Hiked the Catawba Falls in the morning, which is really close by. We visited the beautiful Baltimore Estate for the Christmas evening tour, it was unreal and I highly suggest going anytime of the year. The winery there was fabulous!! Went to Asheville a few times (approx 35min drive), to join in on some of the brewery tours/tastings. Went to Grove Park Inn, and had lunch on the terrace, the views there are gorgeous!
We would recommend the Mountain Laurel house and hope to be back for a visit one day.
Happy Thanksgiving and Cheers,

My friend and I rented this home for a four night girl friends getaway to enjoy the fall leaves in the area and all along the blue ridge parkway. The home is beautifully appointed with all of the amenities of being at your own home. It was lovely to come back to such a calm, peaceful setting at the end of a long day of driving, hiking and sightseeing. We would enjoy sitting and reading on the outside patio or reading by a fire in the wood-burning stove! I would definitely consider staying here again.
I stayed at this property from Oct 23 to 27, 2016. The house is beautiful and very well maintained. It's a gated community, so feels very safe. It is half hour drive from chimney rock and lake lure. We really enjoyed our stay. The only little downside was that the drive to the house was very steep, we managed, but it made me a little uncomfortable everytime. I would recommend this house to everyone.
We arrived in the Old Fort area on a very warm Saturday morning. Started to reconsider going to North Carolina mid summer, glad we came. The mountain home was AMAZING! It was definitely cooler up top. The house was spotless with more amenities than mentioned in the HomeAway website. In fact, there was nothing lacking for what we were cooking or during leisure.
The house was already cooled when we arrived. The view from the deck was beautiful whether it was sunrise, watching a storm go across the valley below, or watch the sunset! There was the cutest nook off the spare room with a lovely stone wall and gnome watching your every move. The landscaping of this area was extremely inviting. The decks had plenty of space with outdoor furniture for lounging or dining. We used the gas grill hard and had a much better view than any restaurant in the area.
Places we enjoyed while there: Of course we loved the relaxed atmosphere at Phil's Bar-B-Que Pit. We did a Paddle board tour in Asheville area of the French Broad River. This was booked with Kyle of Mauii SUP (stand up paddleboarding). Kyle was amazing with his patience for helping us succeed. And the Biltmore Mansion is well worth going to. Go early as the crowd assembles early and there is a lot to see. The gardens rival our local Longwood Gardens. The Blue Ridge Parkway was also amazing. We went to Little Switzerland for a lovely dinner overseeing the valley below. All in all it was a fairly central location for all that we chose to do.
Lynne made sure we had detailed instructions for everything from locating the home to how to manage everything in the home. We could not have asked for anything more!
We arrived at night in the pouring rain, so Lynne's clear directions were a big help! The cabin is easy to find (which is not always the case in this part of the world), and very well-equipped and comfortable. Everything works, and you will have everything you need in the kitchen, whether you are cooking an actual meal or just heating up a frozen pizza. I even baked a little cake! There are clear directions for using the TV, Internet, and DVD player, there are plenty of sheets, towels, soaps, etc., and there is a nice selection of movies.
The view is spectacular from inside or outside the cabin. I think my favorite thing about our stay in the cabin was watching the sky from the living room. The view changes with the time of day and with the weather, and it was fascinating and uplifting to just sit and watch the mountains. We enjoyed our hikes around the Gateway property, and I even saw a bear one day!
Thank you for sharing your beautiful home and making our stay so comfortable. We had everything we could need and enjoyed sitting out on the deck watching the clouds change over the mountains. The sound system is great and the outdoor speakers really created a wonderful experience. We were able to use the Bluetooth to listen to our own tunes, but we wished we had brought a few Cd's with us as well. The beds were comfortable with soft linens and the kitchen was open and spacious enough for my husband and I to prepare breakfast together. The family room downstairs was perfect for DVD watching at night (we brought some of our own, but the selection provided has many award winners).
The location was very private and the drive up to the house was beautiful. The roads up the mountain are winding, but my hubby is used to turning on mountain roads being from Utah. We stopped at the grocery in Black Mountain on our way, so that made it easy not to have to go back down once we settled in. We visited the Biltmore, Asheville, Black Mountain and Chimney Rock. We also enjoyed the trails to Catawba Falls with the swimming hole and the falls we could play in. Thanks again for a wonderful stay and easy to follow instructions for your rental!
A 45 minutes drive will take you to historic downtown Hendersonville and the nearby Flat Rock Playhouse. Also nearby are Chimney Rock Park, Mount Pisgah, and Mount Mitchell State Parks. Mt Mitchell is the tallest peak in the eastern US. Lake Lure is 30 minutes away with it's beaches, picnic areas and boat rental facilities. Or, you can enjoy a lunch or dinner cruise or dine at one of their lakeside restaurants. There is a grocery store in Old Fort, a 10 minute drive away, and there are 2 more in Black Mountain, a 20 minute drive away. Old Fort features genuine mountain music every Friday and Black Mountain also has live entertainment during the summer. There are swimming pools in Old Fort and in Black Mountain. Information on these and other attractions are at the house as well as recommendations for dining out and menus from local restaurants. The house is stocked with most of the basics. Check with the property owner for more information.
