RENTERS BEWARE!!!! UNRESPONSIVE OWNER/MANAGEMENT COMPANY

  • 1 of 5

This house itself is worthy of a 3 based on the view alone but considering the issues we faced when dealing with the owner and their management company I struggle to even give this property 1 star. My family of 5 and another family of 4 rented this house for a week in July. The house was spacious and there was plenty of room for everyone. The screened in patio was where we spent most of our time and the view from here is incredible. The kitchen definitely needs some work and updated appliances. We were surprised to find 5 mouse traps in one of the overhead cabinets which fortunately weren't discovered by a child. We also found feces on the pillow and comforter in the bedroom downstairs. Several days later we discovered that a mouse had somehow made its way into the pantry(a different area from where the traps were located)and managed to gnaw on packages and eat through more than half of the items causing us to throw several hundred dollars worth of food away. The owner seemed surprised by this(we texted pictures of the food) and did send an exterminator the next day to set traps(we texted pictures of the dead mouse) but is still refusing to pay for the lost groceries that he originally agreed by text to reimburse us for. Then there's the boat...The day before we were set to arrive Kristen emailed to tell me that they were having issues with the boat but they were working on it. I understand that unforeseeable issues happen but we were given bogus information about how they made arrangements at the marina for us to have a boat until theirs was fixed. Not only did the marina know nothing about it but wouldn't allow us to charge their account # (as we were instructed to do) because they already had outstanding charges on their account that were delinquent. We didn't know from day to day whether we would have a boat and the owner/property manager wasn't returning our calls. One of the draws for us renting this home was the use of the boat. Again, I understand that things happen but we spent a considerable amount of time waiting to hear from them to know how to plan our day. We didn't know from one day to the next whether we had a boat to use that day. They were able to get the boat working 5 days into our trip so we were able to enjoy it for a couple of days. They did reimburse us $300 for the inconvenience after first telling us that the boat was an amenity and not a guarantee. My advise to anyone looking to rent this house is IT ISN'T WORTH IT!

Owner's Response: Sorry to receive such a negative review as this has never happened in the 9 years our home has been available to vacationers. We do take pride in providing a clean and fun environment for all our guests. What this renter failed to mention was the following: We had a long term renter in the home just prior to this reservation and the home was cleaned and in good condition. The mouse condition was not reported to ownership and the traps were tucked away in the upper cabinets where no one would see at a glance. Immediately upon being told about the mice, we contacted exterminators at once and contracted them at an emergency rate of $600 in hopes to remedy the situation right away and it was. The pontoon boat was damaged, literally the day before this reservation and we had mechanics mobilized within 2 days during the 4th of July holiday. The renters were without the boat for 2 out of the 6 days reserved in which time I arranged a rental boat from the marina at my expense. Again, we paid extra money to expedite the repairs and had the boat ready to go promptly. All together I paid over $1000 to help this guest enjoy his stay but apparently that means nothing. Not to mention an additional $300 refund back to them. I did not even try to recover the $250 that I had to pay to repair the kitchen sink that they destroyed. So now that brings my out of pocket expense to closer to $1500 all just to try to please this guest. It is very troubling to have such a ridiculous review on our page but I can guarantee that the property and my staff is nothing like what this guest is trying to convey. Again, we have had nothing but positive feedback for 9 years and this was just a case of bad timing. Unfortunately we cannot please everyone and some are never pleased, like this man. The rental business is full of surprises and one of them is renters who's main focus is to try to get something for nothing and this is a prime example. If it had not been the things he mentioned, I am sure he would have blown something else out of proportion in hopes to get a refund when our home is very reasonably priced compared to comparable properties. I feel sorry for this person and I can guarantee that no guest will face anything like this.

Terrible Management Company

  • 1 of 5

Without going into too much detail - the home itself is beautiful. Great views, great layout, worked well for 2 families with 2 kids each. However, the management company is terrible to deal with. We had an issue upon check-in and I tried calling and emailing my main contact (as my other contact was on maternity leave). I never heard back from my main contact and had to resort calling the contact on maternity leave and she was able to resolve it. Very unprofessional. Also, the kitchen is lacking in several areas - glassware is old and cracking, numbers/settings have been rubbed off the stove, and the vent/exhaust fan for the stove is in major need of cleaning. My biggest issue was the active mold that we found in the air vents of one of the bedrooms. I informed the property management company of this on Sunday and all I got was an "I'm sorry". We left on Tuesday and there had not been anyone come to the house to examine the mold or to investigate the issue. That was unacceptable to me. And the fact that the mold was there was pretty disgusting and we were certainly turned off by it. Lastly, the Big Canoe area is nice, but for those travelling to the area, make sure that you understand how the pool and lake access work. You have to pay to access the pool area. We were not informed of this by the property management company and were surprised when we showed up to swim with our kids.

Easter week, '13

  • 5 of 5

Where do I begin? We had a family reunion with Grandparents, 3 adult children and their spouses, and 4 grandchildren. What a slice of Heaven this wonderful house was. The kids had plenty of room to run around, play pool, play games, watch TV, and we even had a Easter Egg Hunt on the decks. The first morning we saw a family of deer and two babies running in the forest. Then there were several Turkey Vultures circling the forest, gliding on the up drafts, and we even saw a "family" of wild turkey's crossing the road, one at a time. All traffic stopped to let them cross, for a total of 7! The wildlife abounds, but the most amazing feature of Big Canoe is the total lack of noise, the quietness of nature. My favorite part of the house was the screened patio, and I spent most of my time sitting out there contemplating life...or maybe not that serious. It was equally serene in the daytime as well as evening. All the houses melt into the mountain during the day, and in evening you can see the hills peppered with lights from all the homes. The lake is beautiful and we had such a beautiful view from our house, way up high. I would advise a 4 wheel drive in the winter to navigate the steep grade. We made dinners for 10 every night with no problem, the house is furnished with plenty of kitchen gadgets to cook anything. There is plenty to do, i.e., boating, canoeing, hiking, hiking and hiking. There are two (maybe more?) falls that you should see, Lower and Upper falls. And of course, there is the rec center with indoor pool, fitness gym, etc. Our family had a wonderful time, and grandma had a very serene time as a couch potatoe out on the screened porch...a good place to tell stories. We recommend very highly, especially if you need a get-away from the hustle and bustle of our busy lives. Totally relaxing, we didn't want to leave.
