Handmade Cottage on 70 Acres

Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

Cottage, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4-6)

A perfect Getaway Rental In Upstate New York's Lush Dairy Country

Handmade house on 70 acre former dairy farm. Halfway between Cobleskill and Cooperstown. Very secluded, very peaceful, with 2 ponds, babbling brooks, woods and apple orchards and wild heron on the wetlands. This is one of the most relaxing, rustic spots you can imagine. Come and hike the land, cook great meals, or have a great nap in a rocking chair by the fire! Private and quiet, yet near to many wonderful things to do like Howe Caverns, Cooperstown, Glimmerglass Opera, antiquing, visiting Organic farms, Museums, The Baseball Hall of Fame, The Adirondacks, and on and on.

The farm is surrounded by state land, so Fall Foliage is amazing. And apple picking is a perfect afternoon activity. Upstate NY is amazing in the fall- crisp, chiseled days and brisk, clear nights. Enjoy our fire pit on the back patio under the stars.

Swimming in the spring-fed ponds in summer is so refreshing. The fishing in our ponds is wonderful. Our land glows at night with fireflies all July, and August brings nearby festivals, carnivals, and fairs all over the area.

The driveway is plowed in the winter for easy access, and the sledding and snowmobiling are fantastic. The woodstove is the heat source and heats the whole house beautifully and easily. And there is plenty of wood to keep it cozy all day and all night.

And the spring is a perfect time to come up- the brooks are babbling with melted snow, the acreage is turning green and starting to bloom, and the wild turkey, deer and heron abound!

The house has great amenities- Wood burning stove, dishwasher, microwave, double oven, well stocked kitchen with all hand appliances, wrap around porch, deep tub, satellite TV, DVD player and movie library, WIFI DSL line, CD player, King bed in sleeping loft, washing machine, futon, books and toys, linens and towels.

House comfortably sleeps 4-6 people. It is perfect for a family, a group of friends, or as a solo getaway from it all. The house is very kid-friendly, and well stocked with toys. Dogs are allowed with an extra deposit.

Monthly and Season rates can be discussed. Popular Holiday weekends and weeks (Christmas, New Year's, July 4th, Valentine's day, Labor Day, Memorial Day) are slightly higher in price. Fully refundable Deposit required for each rental.

The farm is 3 hours from New York City, 45 minutes from Albany, 25 minutes to Cooperstown, and 20 minutes to Cobleskill.

About mindy

We bought this beautiful acreage years ago, as a respite from city life. There was no house on the property, it had been torn down ages before. And we fulfilled a dream of hand-building a home for ourselves, and family, and friends.

mindy purchased this cottage in 1997

Why mindy chose Cobleskill

We love upstate NY for it's gorgeous rolling hills, and pastural openness. We bought this exact property for the acreage, the secluded oasis, the views, the ability to build and create. And we wanted to lovingly restore the 125 year old barns.

What makes this cottage unique

The Quietest place we know.

The land is ripe, the views elating, The privacy amazing.

The ponds for swimming, the orchards for picking, the sky for it's awe inspiring vastness

Watching storms roll in over the mountains.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a perfect time! the kids loved swimming in the pond, hiking around the land, and the close proximity of Cooperstown. It was a great family getaway. Thanks for all the help

We enjoyed the cottage in the middle of peace. It was quaint and comfy.

Overall, our family loved it! The little frogs, deer, fish, birds, bunnies, and chipmunk every morning were just what we wanted/needed.

The only thing that needs improvement is the shower/bath. But, there is work in progress which we think would make this place even better. We want to return when renovations are complete! Thanks for a great week vacation!

Wonderful Long Weekend

  • 5 of 5

We had a brilliant time over the Labor Day weekend, just us and our two dogs. The big dog was able to run around like a crazy fool and was so very happy. (Note: bring good grooming stuff to pull out burrs!) and the old fourteen year old acted like a puppy again which really was heartwarming. The location is stunning with gorgeous vistas. It faces west so the sunset was amazing. It is very cozy sleeping while the rain poured down on the roof...and hearing the coyotes was very, very cool. House was equipped with everything we needed and Mindy did a great job making sure we actually found everything around from shopping to touring. Cooperstown was only a half hour away which was excellent, but great to get back to our quiet little hollow in the evening. Lastly....the well water makes for amazingly shiny hair. I've not had hair quite so luxuriant in a long time! Thanks, Mindy! Can't wait to see what you guys are building!

Idyllic country setting

  • 4 of 5

Loved the location, house and grounds. The best part of our stay was daily swims. The house is very well equipped with all that's necessary and more. The bathtub could use an update.

Total misrepresentation of house and property

  • 1 of 5

Picture shows a nice red house overlooking a pond. Picture was of the barn. House was in need of repair and had construction on one side with torn down boards with big nails in it. Bedroom is up narrow steps and bathroom was on first floor. House was terribly dusty and cobwebby. Tub was dirty. Porch was overgrown with vines. Very overpriced for condition of the property. Called owner about concerns and was never called back

Owner's Response: My rental property is a lovely 70 acre respite- it is clean. it is cozy. It is rural farmland. I do not in any way misrepresent my property. I communicated openly and avidly with this renter by email, but never received a phone call. Communication is very important to me. Please read the other 49 reviews over the last 9 years. I welcome your stay on our wisteria covered porch, our comfortable house and invite you to enjoy the solitude and adventures we have to offer.

What a disappointment

  • 2 of 5

First the good: It's a beautiful piece of property, with the outdoors nicely maintained, in a lovely area.

But the house is a dump. Dirty dishes in the dishwasher when we arrived, grime on the walls, holes in the tattered bed sheets, some of the furniture way too grubby to consider sitting on, broken chairs scattered around on the porch, the filthiest ceiling fans I've ever seen. Lots of things don't really work right, like the shower that's so mineralized the weak mist of water only reaches to your shoulders. You could take a bath instead, but I wouldn't sit down in that tub. I had to go around and plug in and fiddle with the lamps to get them to work. The whole place was unprepared for guests. The pictures are are deceptive.

The owners show no consideration for the people who rent their property for more than 200 a night. In most VRBO rentals the owners clear up a bit to give the renters some space. This house was so cluttered with the owners things there was barely anyplace to put something down, no room in the cabinets for food you might bring, no place to hang up a coat. There's jumbles of stuff everywhere.

I understand this is a house in the country - and again the outside is beautiful - but being a "farm" is no excuse for inconsiderate slovenliness - not at half the price.

Owner's Response: We are sorry you did not enjoy your stay at our rustic cabin. We work very hard to keep a comfy, clean house in the middle of a rural area, and my cleaner takes great pride in her work.
