2-Bedroom Timber Cottage with Large Living Room/Kitchen in a Rural Setting
About Fiona Rice
Hi, I'm Fi ('Fee' - short for Fiona). I was born at Belstane and have lived here most my life - when I wasn't pursuing my career as an international water skier I returned to take over my parents' farming operation with my husband Dave. We down-sized our farming operation a few years back but Belstane is still working livestock operation. This is a lovely place to live and we thought we'd like to share it with you.
Fiona Rice purchased this House in 2016
Why Fiona Rice chose Kirknewton
As we already said, we love living here, it's very rural yet there's loads going on and it's just a bus or train ride from the nearest village into Edinburgh with all that that city has to offer. We thought we'd like to share Belstane with you (we like having people around) so we decided to build a cabin in our hay field. The cabin sits on its own and you'll be able to enjoy the local wildlife, as likely as not, if you're an early riser, seeing deer in the field or wood adjacent to the cabin.
What makes this House unique
The cabin is in a very rural and private setting, sitting on its own in tree-fringed fields. Here you can enjoy everything that a country holiday has to offer from walking & cycling to golf and fishing with many more sports that you might like to try your hand at such as clay pigeon shooting or rock climbing.

Property was spotless and provided every facility you could possibly need. Lovely remote spot for peaceful relaxation and walks, also only a short drive to Edinburgh. (There is park and ride not too far away).
We were greeted by the property manager -(even though we had arrived in the dark)! and had been left thoughtful welcome gifts when we went over to the cabin. Myself, my sister - and her dog, thoroughly enjoyed our 4 night stay, and agreed that we would happily book the cabin again in the future.Would recommend this venue.
Thank you for your kind words Marlene. We’re really glad you enjoyed your stay and of course, we’d love to see you again. Thanks also for leaving the place so spotless, there was hardly any evidence that youo’d been there at all!
Beautifully presented log cabin in stunning countryside location
This log cabin is beautifully presented with quality furnishings inside (I simply loved the woollen tartan curtains!!). It is certainly very cosy and welcoming. Fiona met us as we drove up and there was lovely flowers, wine and fresh fruit for our arrival and a personalised card which was a very unique touch. Bedrooms were both spacious with crisp white linen sheets and lovely furnishings. Nice to see original artwork throughout the property by David - very impressive. Kitchen was high spec with eveything you could wish for. Spent many a morning counting the sheep (29 was my largest count) and we did have one roe deer near one day and an owl on the post one night. I would recommend this to anyone wanting a lovely quiet getaway. Pity we had rainy weather but it is Scotland!!! Would love to come back just a pity it is a min 4 night stay as we are often up for 2 nights to visit our son at uni but appreciate that is more difficult to accommodate.
Thank you for your lovely comments! You’ll be welcome here anytime.
Lovely stay. Exactly what I needed for my work in the area
Really nice log cabin in a splendidly quiet location
Andrew will be welcome back here any time, the perfect guest.
Relaxing lodge with everything you need. Very friendly hosts.
Really cosy place and great hosts.
Thank you for your kind comment! It was lovely having you, please do come back again, we’d love to see you again. And thank you for leaving the place so clean and tidy.
Great accommodation and ideal for that break away from the day to day hustle and bustle of the daily grind. Great hosts made us feel very welcome and grateful to the wildlife for allowing us to stay in their lovely back yard.
We’re very glad you enjoyed your stay and hope everything was as you’d want it. Thank you for leaving the place so clean and tidy and please do come back another time when you don’t have a marathon to run!
Belstane Log Cabin is a brand new self-catering holiday home situated in the countryside on the edge of the Pentland Regional Park not far from Edinburgh. Sitting alone in 14 acres of tree-fringed fields it is the perfect location for a tranquil and contemplative countryside holiday with wildlife and birdwatching readily on hand.
But don't let that put you off if you also want a more activity-oriented holiday. Belstane is very close to a whole myriad of activities from golf to fishing, from rock climbing to mountain biking and with the Festival City of Edinburgh only a short bus or train ride from the nearest village, there's everything on hand that this ancient capital city has to offer: ancient historic buildings such as Holyrood Palace (the Queen's Edinburgh home), Edinburgh Castle the world's most impressive castle, dominating the Edinburgh skyline and many more. And don't forget, Edinburgh Zoo is the only place outside China where you can see giant pandas - as well as its famed display of penguins.
Both locally and in the city of Edinburgh, we're blessed with many fine places to eat, from local take-aways of the highest quality to fine, five-star dining in and around the city.
