Perfect place for a quiet, relaxing, beach vacation!

  • 5 of 5

We had a fabulous stay at the Caribbean Reef Villas. Puerto Morelos is the perfect place for people who are looking for somewhere quiet, relaxing, and less touristy than nearby Cancun and Playa del Carmen. We loved exploring all of the small local restaurants, a great town for cocktail and seafood lovers. When the locales were full of locals, we knew we were in the right spot!

Karl is great. This was my first experience using VRBO so I'm sure I asked plenty of dumb questions, but he was very helpful and extremely responsive. The condo, beach, pool, and entire property in general is very well maintained and the caretakers were very helpful with any questions we had. They even made phone calls for us when we were struggling with language barrier. We were planning to travel with 5 adults, and ended up only having 3...it would have been a tight stay with all 5 of us. We got groceries to have breakfast and lunch in the condo and went into town for dinner each night. This worked out great.

A few things of note...

-Some folks reviews have mentioned being able to walk to town via the beach. I'm not sure if the beach front towards town has changed since these folks have been there but you can no longer do that, we tried. However, if you walk out to the main drag outside the Villas it is very easy to grab a taxi, and don't let them charge you more than 50 Pesos to get to town! It is also very easy to get a taxi back once in town.

-We got groceries at the Super Chedraui right off of the highway exit to Puerto Morelos and there were many cabs in the parking lot, so that was not an issue.

-We wanted to go snorkeling during our stay but the majority of the days were VERY windy and the port was closed. Not sure if this is a function of the time of year or what. We walked down to Marina el Cid resort, and the folks doing the snorkeling tours there were very helpful albeit the language barrier.

I cannot wait to go back to Puerto Morelos and really hope that it stays the small, quaint, fishing village it is and doesn't get taken over by huge resorts!!!

Beyound expectations

  • 5 of 5

We were there for 2 weeks the first, with another couple. This was beyond our expectations.

Superb views complemented by an amazing pool. The condo was perfect for our needs. Kitchen is complete minus an oven which was not a problem since one could use the charcoal grill outside.

The beach itself was cleaned every day and very nice. Don't expect a swiming beach, you need water shoes, however it is perfect for snorkeling.

Everything is very well maintained by Arlene, Fernando and Maria who were amazing during our stay.

On our second week, my wife and I had the place to ourselves since there was nobody else but the staff during the day and security at night. We never felt unsafe.

So far our best vacation. Perfect location and a short taxi ride away from everything, great condo.

Concerning Karl, very easy to deal with and a very patient man answering all of our questions.

BTW, it helps to know a bit of Spanish and it is appreciated.

We will definitely be returning to this amazing place.

Great beach vacation spot!

  • 5 of 5

Karl’s place was so nice! There were 2 couples and we both had our own bedroom and bath to use. The kitchen and living area were plenty for beach cooking and hanging out. We loved the patio, beautiful pool area and beach front. The beach in front of the condo isn’t really a swimming beach but provided great views. It is a very quiet property, not in the hub of PM so it’s great for privacy, but a bit of a walk to town and the main beach strip. It didn’t really bother us because we got some exercise:) I would definitely stay here again. We love the do your own experience versus the hotel and resort atmosphere. Karl was great to work with, and we think the value of the condo was pretty good. We ate out at several restaurants while we were there, including La Sirena, Punto Corcho (amazing ceviche) and one fantastic find-DK Puerto Morelos-a converted shipping container that you will find on your way to town. Awesome drinks, and appetizers! Shows up on your walk to town just about when you say "I could use a cocktail!"

lovely condo on a private, secluded beach

  • 5 of 5

We attended a wedding at a nearby resort hotel in Puerto Morelos, and I was looking for a nearby condo on the beach to stay at given our aversion to the all inclusive resort hotel scene - this condo was perfect for us.

The property is a well kept 3 story white stucco building, with a very nice pool and a private beach. This was the low season and there were only a couple other renters, so the setting felt very private and secluded.

The condo itself is very nicely furnished, clean, with a large balcony (nice patio furniture) and gorgeous views of the ocean. Since we attended some wedding events we didn't use the kitchen at all, but it seemed well stocked with utensils, etc. There is a large cooler of water so no need to bring bottled water.

Arlene was very responsive to emails. The only issue to be aware of is that the property a bit outside of the town and there is no way to walk to town via the beach, even though it is not too far away (the port is located between the condo and town and it is fenced off for security purpose). The condo is located on the road from town to the resort hotels, so taxis do go by frequently - a couple times I walked to the road and only had to wait 5 mins or so to flag down a taxi. Arlene also offered to call a taxi for me, so that is another option. Also note that google map shows the entrance to the condo at a wrong point (looks like that may have been the original entrance), the actual entrance is closer to town about 30 feet from the point that show up on google maps.

Some reviewers have complained about the seaweed - this seems to be an issue affecting the whole area, I walked a few times on the beach from the condo to the resort hotel, and all beach properties deal with cleaning the seaweed. I will say that directly in front of the condo, at least the days I was there, the ocean had a lot of seaweed - seemed a current brought it right to that spot, but I just moved over and swam about 30 feet over at the beach next to the condo (there are no other properties near the condo) and there was no seaweed in the water.

The ocean was pretty calm and swimming was great. Interestingly at the resort hotel only a mile down the beach, the ocean was much rougher and the hotel lifeguards had closed that hotel beach for swimming for 3 days straight - whereas at both the condo and in town the ocean was much calmer. Great for kids.

In all, the condo was a lovely oasis that we and our two small kids enjoyed very much.

Poor start - can't rate it higher

  • 1 of 5

Our dealing with Karl prior to arrival by email was always prompt and informative. Our travel group (two couples) had advised Karl we landed at 3:15pm, needed to get to our shuttle, stop for groceries and would than arrive. We were told that Arlene / Fernando would meet us and let us in and assistance with luggage/bags would be available. NOPE.....we arrived at the property about 5:30pm - no Arlene and the phone number on Karl's document that we called said "I don't manage his property anymore". We split up and went in different directions on the property looking for anyone that might know Arlene and found one that said she had left at least 1/2 hour ago. Karl is MIA on email, we are now starting to get mad and panicked. One of our group found someone that pointed us to where the condo would be and with luck we found the door unlocked with keys on counter and a note from Arlene. Finally getting into the condo we had a bottle of club soda start to leak all over - can't find a scrub cloth, paper towels, Kleenex or napkins....nothing. Found in a closet that was pretending to be locked a mop. Then we check out the bathrooms......2 baths....and only 2 half full rolls of single ply toilet paper...that's it for 4 people. When I asked Karl prior to arrival if there was anything that he can think of to tell us for supplies....you'd think he'd mention TP, paper towels and Kleenex. Moving past our introduction to the condo and the supply issue here are a few other things to be aware of: beds are hard, no stove in kitchen (even a toaster oven would be helpful), no drain cover in master shower so don't drop anything.

At that time of our trip some ocean phenomenon of sea weed had over taken the water and it was everywhere - no clear path to the water and the beach was over run with it. Can't control mother nature but certainly disappointing that the ocean was basically out of commission.

The positives - the view of the ocean from the condo patio....Beautiful. The infinite pool and patio surrounding it.....fantastic.

We won't be back

Owner's Response: Dear Karen, Thank you for reviewing my property. As a prideful property owner and avid traveler myself , I find it very helpful to not only hear the 5 stars reviews such as those written before you but also those accounts that help me understand where and how the operation of my property has fallen short. Firstly, I do apologize for any inconvenience that was experienced during your stay. This is a highly uncharacteristic review and I do want to address this with the utmost sincerity. It is true that the property management had changed just prior to your arrival and because of this there were glitches in the transition, although frustrating, unfortunately these changes were out of my hands and happened to affect your communication during your stay. Rest assured this is no longer a problem. I take pride in providing my renters with a hassle free holiday rental and the fact that you were inconvenienced upon arrival does not sit well with me. I hope that you found my prompt reimbursement for any paper goods acquired on your first day sufficient. I am glad that this was remedied by Arlene the next day and you were able to find your needs met for the rest of your vacation. As far as a stove, the condo does have a fully remodeled kitchen with a brand new 4 burner stove, as well as a four slice toaster available for use and I am concerned what might have prompted you to make this statement. I do also realize that one’s preference in beds is personal and again I am sorry you did not find the beds (one brand new) to your satisfaction. Most of my guest commented favorably about the firm and supporting mattress Thank you for commenting on the condo’s beautiful views. I have spent many days, myself, taking in the sites of this beautiful location from the balcony. I am also glad that you were able to enjoy the relaxing infinity pool as well. As far as the beach, you are correct, Mother Nature has a mind of her own and sea weed does occasional occur. We try our best to control the situation and the duties of our maintenance personal include cleaning the beach daily. The property is fortunate enough to have a very private beach right in front of it and it is a shame that the weather conditions did not allow you to take full advantage of it. Again, thank you for your feedback as I find it an invaluable tool to help create a rental property that singles and families alike find not only affordable but a comfortable place to enjoy a well deserved holiday.

Dream Escape to Puerto Morelos

My mother and I rented Karl's condo and had a thoroughly enjoyable/relaxing holiday there. The place is clean and fresh. We found the kitchenette to be well-organized and the patio furniture was divine. We would definitely rent this unit from Karl again!
