About the property

House, 1 TO 3 Bedrooms, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 1 TO 6)

Please note that Honu Kai was sold the first of 2017 and is now listed under VRBO LISTING # 976020 . PLEASE CONTACT TERESA LEWIS FOR UPDATED AVAILABILITY AND PRICING AT TWEEZ@AUSTIN.RR.COM. CURRENT RESERVATIONS AND MONIES HAVE BEEN TRANSFERRED TO THE NEW OWNERS.

Honu Kai which means 'Sea Turtle ' in the Hawaiian language is a beautifully refurbished Hawaiian beach house great for friends and families with all the amenities you could wish for on your vacation. The 3 bedroom and 3 bath house has 2 bathrooms on the upper bedroom level and a separate bathroom on the lower carport area for showering and toilet after your swim. The house has a great Hawaiian feel and is maintained beautifully by the owners and efficient house keeping staff.

If you need more sleeping accommodations or desire more room and water practically under your feet then Hula Cove, our guest studio with a king sized bed located across the street and directly on the tidepools may be rented separately or in conjunction with Honu Kai.

The snorkeling entrance to the largest of the tidepools is across the narrow street a mere 25 steps from the front of the house. You can sit on the private front deck of the house gazing at the water and enjoy fresh papaya picked from the nearby papaya plantations. Don't worry about curious passerbys as the large Areca and hibiscus hedge shields the house from the afternoon noise and business of the tidepool sunbathers and swimmers.

Maybe you would like to take a bike ride thru the community or relax on the back patio getting a tan or quietly meditating while emjoying the orchids and coconut palms.

When it's time to turn in enjoy the sounds of the waves crashing on the reef in the distance or maybe the rain pounding on the house's tin roof. In this part of the world there is only the sounds of nature at night.

About TERESA LEWIS

I live in Los Angeles, Ca.where I own my own company since 2003. I discovered the Kapoho tide pools while exploring the Islands in the 80s and fell in love with the snorkeling and the laid back attitude of the area. I was captain of my university's swim team and here was a place for safe swimming and snorkeling inside a protected reef. I never tire of returning to the area for some RandR and truthfully a little zen experience.

TERESA LEWIS purchased this house in 2006

Why TERESA LEWIS chose Puna District

Honu Kai is so well situated near the water. It is private with a wonderful Hawaiian feeling. There is no "You could be anywhere" feeling here. You know you are in Hawaii with a bit of a nostalgia feeling .

Perfect!

We loved calling this home! It was my husband and I and our best friends and the four of us never felt crowded. The place was big, clean and comfortable. The tide pools were literally across the street and offers fantastic snorkeling. We were so close to all the volcano action too which was right where we wanted to be! We will be back someday!

Perfect base for exploring the Hilo side of Hawaii

  • 5 of 5

This house quickly feels like home. It is well provisioned and comfortably serves 3 couples or a family. If you want to be in the thick of the tourist hype, this is not for you. If you want a peaceful place to rest in between trips to Hilo, the falls and botanical gardens, Volcano National Park, or hiking to where the lava hits the ocean, this is it. It's an easy walk to the tide pools, where the snorkeling is fabulous. We loved being here and hope to return.

Amazing Location and View

  • 5 of 5

We just spent a couple days at Honu Kai and it is a beautiful home. The location and views are perfect - best snorkeling in all of Hawai'i IMO. It is also a great jumping off point to all things east Big Island. The drive down the Red Road is beautiful, you are only about 45 min from Volcano National Park and 30-45 minutes from Hilo as well. Just north of Hilo are the Tropical Botanical Garden and Akaka Falls - both definitely worth a trip.

The house itself is clean, spacious and comfortable with all the gear you could need - bikes, snorkels, fins, boogie boards, water shoes, hammock, lounge chairs, etc. The kitchen is fully equipped and nicely updated. The view from the home is beautiful. The owners also provide a ton of great local information (restaurants, activities, etc.) and I felt welcome as soon as I walked in the door.

Thank you for your hospitality and a wonderful visit!

Teresa

We greatly enjoyed our stay at Hona KaI

  • 4 of 5

If you want real Hawai'i then this area is for you!!!! Whispering palm trees sound like rain until you hear the rain. It rained a lot but was always clear enough to snorkel at some point of the day. House is comfortable as are the beds. Between the ocean the palms and the frogs we sleept like logs!!!!!

To experience true Hawai'i, stay at Hona Kai!

Relaxing Rainforest Tide Pool Home!

  • 5 of 5

My family stayed at 'Honu Kai' in August 2016. The property owner, Mike, was well beyond responsive to both our needs, comfort, and experience! It was a snap to book his place on HomeAway/VRBO. He was extremely helpful and super quick getting payment and arrival docs send to us. Mike even arranged for a baby stroller to be available for our stay at Honu Kai. Well beyond what many luxury hotels will do for guests! Thank you so much!

The house was well-stocked with everything essential you'll need to cook and relax! There were plenty of supplies like dishwasher detergent, paper towels -- even laundry soap! We like the extra small touches like a waterproof sleeve for your cellphone! My wife and I were enjoying a belated anniversary celebration (this trip) and found a nice card and gift waiting for us upon arrival. Again, this is luxury hotel level customer service.

Our family thoroughly enjoyed snorkeling at the tide pools across the road! Plenty of nice equipment -- including a bicycle -- stored inside for guests to freely use. Some owners charge for use of snorkeling gear, etc.! Mike allowed full use of everything! Hospitality at its finest.

When we had a minor issue or routine question during our stay, Mike was emailed. We could've called him too, but *nothing* I had was urgent at all. He responded back faster than my smartphone's data refresh rate! Within a minute or two. Where's the best pizza around here?? Mike also provided detailed sightseeing and food recommendations daily! Thanks for the Ken's in Hilo referral! I'm still stuffed from the Sumo pancake stack, ha-ha! Again, something you'd get from luxury hotels. We saw the lava flow a very short drive away.

Honu Kai was very clean and comfortable. Lots of room, windows, and airflow! We loved the chirping frogs at night and sometimes we'd get a very harmless Gecko inside the house. Kids loved 'em! Plenty of safe parking under house at front. Easy for a minivan full of kids, ha!

Would I stay here again? Ah... Yes, without a doubt! This owner truly values and treasures visitors staying at his property. Overall excellent experience at Honu Kai.

Owner's Response: Aloha Martin, It was our pleasure to host you and your family at Honu Kai. From our discussions it seemed that you really enjoyed exploring and discovering the east side of the island. Besides the Kapoho tidepools there is so much more to see including the volcano, hidden beaches, old town Pahoa and Hilo as well as the farmer's markets. I hope you saved some exploring for another trip to Honu Kai and the Big Island. Mahalo, Mike
