About Dana, Becky, & Jenelle

I came to San Diego from the New England area over 30 years ago and I immediately knew San Diego was where I wanted to establish myself. I earned my Real Estate License in 1979, my Broker’s License in 1984 and founded Dana Horne Realty in 1987. In the year 2000, I purchased my first vacation rental property and a new aspect of my business was born . . . Vacation rental management! My wife, Becky, is our "Vacation Rental Manager". Together with our small, but experienced staff, we pride ourselves on strong customer service and making ourselves available to our clients before, during, and after office hours, seven days a week.

We are here to help make your vacation fabulous!

Guestbook comments from the owner

"A single mother of four and grandma to one, 46-year-old Maria has been battling breast cancer when -- despite multiple chemotherapy threatments -- she developed brain metastasis as well. Devoted to her family, Maria worked tirelessly to make sure their days and routines were as normal as possible. Her one dream was for a special getaway full of happy moments and the opportunity to ignite her children's passion for creativity by showing them a new city and wild animals from around the world. They enjoyed several relaxing days by the ocean, thanks to Dana Horne Vacation Rentals, and fun outings to SeaWorld San Diego and San Diego Zoo. Her favorite part of the trip was watching her children enjoy themselves and getting a break from her treatment. Maria said, 'Thank you for giving us so much. It was the chance to be free from hospitals and to leave memories for my children.'"

"Lions and Tigers and Bears!" The Dream Foundation Newsletter. Vol 1. From the Heart (2013): Page 10. Print.

We are so glad that we could help provide a moment's solice for Maria and her family. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time. Thank you to the Dream Foundation for allowing us to help families find some quiet time together.

Beautiful views

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time in this rental for the week. The views were great of the channel and you can even see the sunsets on the ocean from the living room. There is a great breeze that comes in the windows and patio doors.

The owners were very accommodating and kept in touch to make sure we had everything we needed.

I would recommend this unit.

A Nice Place, Had Some Minor Issues

  • 4 of 5

It's a nice place, with a great view. We found a lot of minor maintenance issues. In his defense, owner offered to send a contractor over, but since we had two small children with us, that would have been pretty disruptive.

Great property and location

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed in this property several times in the past, and expect to do so again in the future. I would certainly recommend it to friends or relatives, especially if they want to stay in a comfortable, spacious location within a couple of minutes walk of the main beach, and have a great view of all the activity in the small-boat channel leading from Mission Bay to the open ocean.

We have had good experiences with the manger over the years. In our experience, when unexpected issues have arisen, the manager has dealt with them promptly and effectively.

In my view, description of the property in the website listing accurately describes the property. The elevator was under repair while we were there this time, and we were informed of that beforehand. The manager offered to have someone there to assist with our luggage on arrival. We declined the offer, as it is no big deal for us to pack our stuff up a couple of flights of stairs. Even when the elevator is operational, we almost always use the stairs instead. We understand that the elevator is back in operation (and it might have been while we were still there - we didn't check).

The property was clean and well maintained. All of the systems within the unit seemed to be operating properly. We have never had a problem with break-ins. However, I would recommend that the locking mechanism for the sliding patio door into one of the bedrooms be upgraded from the standard "lever-lock" mechanism to something that would be a little more pick-proof.

The property is well-located for getting around San Diego, although at certain times (e.g. a fine Saturday afternoon) the traffic over the bridge crossing Mission Bay gets a bit backed up. At most times, it is only 5 minutes or so from the property to I5 or I8 or Sea World, less than 10 minutes to Old Town, 15 minutes to downtown, the zoo, etc.

Nice view

  • 2 of 5

The view is the only nice thing to say the over all appearance is older the t.v didn’t work properly kept going out, outlets were old and loose, the elevator was out of order and a large rock was used as a door stop for main building door entrance which is a tripping hazard in the dark. The over all feeling was not very welcoming any noise is taken as a party. You are under constant scrutiny like they expect you to be a noisy teenager instead of adults enjoying a nice weekend by the beach. Plus frequent phone calls as well as drop in visits from someone listed as contact persons make you feel on edge. We accidentally parked in the wrong space, one spot over from the right space but instead of just asking for us to move we were called spoken down to like they were lecturing a child then threatened to be kicked out if it wasn’t moved. No room for error here so besides a nice view it felt like an overall stressful stay at your mean old aunts house

Owner's Response: I hope that potential guests will read our previous reviews before making a judgement based on this review. As property managers/owners we normally call our guests twice during their stay, once upon their arrival to make sure everything is satisfactory and once before their departure to see how their stay was and answer any procedural questions about check-out. Other than that, we give them their privacy. Unfortunately, we received two separate reports from others in the building that our guests were yelling crude and sexist comments to female passersby. We received a third complaint that they were parking in a space that was clearly labeled for another unit. At that point, we felt it was necessary to be proactive in preventing additional incidents. We want our guests to feel welcome and relaxed, but we cannot allow them to disturb and take away the enjoyment of others in the building. Please keep in mind that even though the name on this review is “Christina”, she made the reservation, but was not present at the property. This was a group of all men, from what I could tell mostly in their 20’s. In response to the other issues, our guests were told in advance that the elevator was out of order and we offered to meet them to help carry luggage and groceries up the stairs for them, but they did not accept our offer (we now have a brand new fully functioning elevator!). As far as the parking goes, we could have simply had their car towed, but we wanted to give them a chance to move it first. The rock has been removed from the building door and should not have been there in the first place (not sure who put it there). If the guests had informed us about the TV and loose outlets we would have tended to them immediately. Thankfully, most of our guests appreciate and comply with the property guidelines to the benefit and enjoyment of everyone in the building and this is very seldom an issue.

Car: not necessary

The boardwalk, officially known as Ocean Front Walk, is a pedestrian walkway that runs approximately 2.3 miles along the beach from the end of Law Street in the north down into Mission Beach, ending at the mouth of Mission Beach. Along this scenic route are a number of local shops, restaurants, bars, and Belmont Park — a fun-filled amusement park for people of all ages. The Ocean Front Walk is packed with pedestrians, cyclists, rollerbladers, and tourists most days of the week, in particular on weekends, but it is worth it to brave the crowds and come check out this hotspot.

To reach the trailhead, head toward the ocean once you reach Law Street and Mission Boulevard. Follow the clearly marked path to the left. You will be immediately greeted by views of the Pacific Ocean to the right, along with plenty of beach goers and slews of other people walking, biking, and rollerblading the same trail. To your left you will start to see a number of small beachside hotels. Approximately 0.5 miles into your walk you will see Crystal Pier, one of the top piers in the state due to the number of fish caught and the possibility of good-quality fish. If you want to add on some extra mileage, take a stop here and walk to the end of the pier where you can catch a spectacular sunset if you time your walk right or get a better view of the marine life and surfers below.

From Crystal Pier, continue forward on the trail towards the main lifeguard tower. At this point you will be passing by the most crowded stretch of the Ocean Front Walk due to the number of popular bars and restaurants nearby. This is also where most people set up camp for basking in the sun and frolicking in the cool waves. If you will be riding a bike, exercise caution in this area because it can get very crowded, especially on weekends. The next mile will continue to be crowded, however if you push through the masses you will suddenly find the crowd thins as you pass by the remaining bars, shops, and beachside hotels. Now you will start to see vacation rentals and apartments on your left — passing by the occasional bachelorette party or family weekend getaway in the beautiful properties to your left. To your right the Pacific Ocean will remain a constant site for the entirety of your walk.

At approximately 1.5 miles down the trail you will see Belmont Park in the distance, noticeable by the staggering roller coaster that soars above the amusement park. You’ll also come across more bars and restaurants — letting you know you’ve now crossed into Mission Beach. It is easy to get distracted at this point and want to let out your inner-kid, riding the roller coaster and maybe even stopping for a game of laser tag. If you are disciplined enough to stay on course, continue down Ocean Front Walk past more beachfront homes and condos, ending at the South Mission Beach parking lot where there are typically fewer crowds. Here is where you will turn back around and retrace your route back north to Law Street.

This is your adventure so if you get distracted stopping at Belmont Park, grabbing a sweet treat at one of the stands, opt to become a beach bum, or want to grab a cold beer on your way back, no one will judge you. After all, not every hike is this scenic and lively, might as well take full advantage of your surroundings.
