House Rules In Hawaii it is customary to remove shoes before entering. After the beach, please use the foot rinse faucet at the bottom of the main house stairs. This helps keep sand off of the Lanai and out of the house. For cleaning muddy hiking shoes, there is a brush next to the foot rinse faucet. Wet towels, bathing suits, and clothing should be hung over the lanai rail or in the bathroom. Please, do not hang them on lamps or furniture. Additionally, do not sit on furniture with wet or damp suits and towels. Mold is a serious problem here in Hawaii. When using the washer and dryer, please keep in mind all the sand and red dirt we have in Kauai. Shake all towels and garments well before washing or drying. Remove lint from the dryer before and after each use. Please think environmentally when using the washer and dryer. Please turn off inside house lights and fans when leaving the house to conserve energy and to protect wildlife (look up Shearwater Birds). Additionally, turn off ALL outside lights at night and keep your doors closed to prevent mosquitoes from entering. Please be respectful to our neighbors; have fun, but please keep music and play at a moderate volume. Please do not exceed 5 MPH down our driveway. Please help us to keep supplying flashlights, umbrellas, beach gear, and guide books by leaving them in the home when you leave. We at the Haena Cottage and the County of Kauai ask that you please not feed the chickens. They have become pests on the island and easily out number the human population. If you have any additional questions please feel free to ask. Mahalo, Katie, Beverly, & Doug Howland
Relaxing and beautiful setting
We enjoyed this peaceful setting with ocean across the road. Morning walks on the beach with mo more than a couple people. It is not a swimming beach, but Tunnels Beach is nearby. Very spacious. Dinner at Tahiti Nui, casual, good food, and entertainment.
Great quiet getaway
Nice quiet cottage in the perfect setting. Would stay here again in a heart beat.
This home is perfect - great location, quiet, clean and well stocked.
The best experience and time on the island.
Private secluded local feel. This home is amazing. If you want to get away from the hotel/resort tourist feel of Princeville- this area is the best. Caught the sunrise and sunset every day — the beach is literally steps always from the home. Meticulously maintaintained. Clean, comfortable, epic views.
Katie was so on top of everything and so welcoming. Patricia the local host was awesome- very helpful and inviting. Will be back again. Mahalo!!
We loved our week stay at the Haena Cottage! The location is fabulous: we loved the proximity to the beach (hearing the surf from the house was amazing) and all the north shore highlights. Hanalei Bay is a cute village just a short drive away. The house was very clean and comfortable and had everything we needed. Katie and Patricia were delightful to deal with and very helpful. A wonderful place to stay on Kauai.

Their youngest daughter Katie lives in Portland with her older sister Miranda. After a career in the arts, Katie now manages the family’s properties. Why Katie Howland chose Wainiha
Doug and Bev were always drawn to the North Shore, when making the decision to put down roots, they couldn’t resist the best part of the island. They fell in love with the unique beauty of their home that balances both accessibility and seclusion.
What makes this House unique
There are many amazing natural wonders right out the front door (see above). This home offers the lush mountainous jungle of Kauai out the back door and the soothing beach and ocean out the front door.
