Cantilevered over stunning rugged coast at Table Cape, north west Tasmania, Australia, The Winged House presents a dramatic art and architectural experience. Designed by award-winning architect Richard Goodwin, the zinc wings seem to lift you and the luxurious 180 degree observatory towards the horizon, with waves breaking on rocks to the east and Rocky Point to the west.
The Winged House has easy access to World Heritage listed - Cradle Mountain's sub-antarctic rain forests, The Tarkine, wild west coast, Cape Grim, Stanley and Dismal Swamp and Rocky Cape National Park with its unique flora. Kayaking, trout fishing, hiking and less challenging short walks are all available in this spectacular island setting which is closer in topography, fauna and flora to Antarctica than the Australian mainland.
Vineyards and wineries, orchards of apples, cherries, pears and olives, crayfish, ocean salmon and ocean trout all contribute to the Ten Days on The Island art, culture and gourmet experience held every two years in March-April.
The land on which The Winged House sits was purchased in 2007. Before beginning building, we spent almost one year clearing parts of the steep block, which was infested with Gorse an introduced pest plant covered in spikes and reaching up to 3m high, Since undertaking the construction of the House, we have gradually revegetated the block with native plants and some exotics. In June 2009, we planted 100 Protea plants down the driveway and 60 small olive trees on one terraced area. Now we are entering an exciting project to try and find bore water under the earth - drilling up to 100m down - with no guarantee of success! If we are fortunate and do find water, we can really go ahead with planting - even putting in some grape vines to take advantage of the Mediterranean-type climate here.
We found water - using a water diviner and local knowledge - and now have another 45000 litres of water on tap. we plan to lay irrigation lines to water the trees, native plants and olives through the hot dry summers, and to create a vegetable and herb garden so guests can have access to fresh produce.
elizabeth and quentin purchased this house in 2007
We chose to build a property that was sympathetic to the rugged coastline, with its sweeping views and magnificent natural heritage of Tasmania
Quoting from the Citation from one of the awards The Winged House has won:'Your first view is of a plane or bird - or maybe a giant silver moth - perched halfway down the giant precipitous slope and poised to take off. As you drive closer it waits; becoming more house than bird. Then you enter and are suspended, not just by the grandeur of the view beneath your feet, but by this moment of arrested flight. You are inside the bird/plane; you feel you really could take off, over the cliffs, sliding through the gently buffering airs rising above the sun-polished sea. Flying off and away - and this feeling is the essence of holiday'
The Winged House was an amazing getaway. We stayed for a week and were very impressed with all the accommodation had to offer. Location is beautiful with the ocean visible from every room (view from the bath a particular highlight!). The house has been equipped with every possible need. Another highlight was the kitchen, stocked with absolutely everything one could need, and the local fresh produce was delicious. I would come back for another stay without hesitation.
Amazing property overlooking the Bass Strait. This property has been brilliantly designed to capture the wonderful views. Going to bed each night with views out over the straits, the full moon reflecting off the sea, and the only the sound of the waves lapping on the shoreline below was incredible (resulting in the best sleep I've had all year). The house is very comfortably furnished (loved the red leather and chrome chairs looking out from the loungeroom), and very cozy, despite the clever architecture. What really set this property apart from many others we have stayed in over the years, however, was all the fantastic local provisions left for us to enjoy our stay, reflecting the great produce of the local region - a real surprise, and one guaranteed to make the guest feel at home. So incredibly thoughtful! Loved this property.
This was my second visit to the Winged House.
The view over the Bass sea through the windows from floor to ceiling is unbeatable.
The architecture and all provisions in the house are highest standard.
The support of the Manager was great, especially in the case with a flat tyre in my car..
Although we are locals we wanted to stay in this designer home in one of the most stunning spots in Tasmania for a weekend getaway. It is truly a most amazing home with gorgeous expansive views and exuding comfort and warmth. Hearing the ocean throughout the night with the louvre windows open even in Winter, was beautiful. It is hard to pull yourself away from the views, but well worth a walk to the beach. The food and facilities are superb. A relaxing and luxurious getaway, thank you.
I was somewhat prepared for the fantastic views and luxury of the house having pored over the very helpful website. I was however completely overawed by the generosity of the host and the beauty and hospitality of the area. The house was more than comfortable, we had a wonderful selection of music, books and movies to browse, all the condiments to create fabulous meals with the local seafood I purchased in Wynyard, (fantastic!) and even some fabulous Tassie wine. The locals were polite, friendly and helpful. I have to say, Tasmania does tourism EXTREMELY well! The touring around North West Tassie my favourite of our whole trip. We will definitely be back and recommend to anyone to treat themselves to a stay at the winged house.
We were very fortunate to stay at The Winged House for four incredible nights. The beautifully designed house on the most spectacular site cannot be surpassed. This is a very interesting area of Tasmania with many activities within easy driving distance from the house. (Although it is very difficult to force yourself away from the house once you arrive.) The owners were a pleasure to work with during the booking process, and we are so grateful they are willing to share their paradise with the rest of us. We highly recommend a visit to Tasmania and a stay at the incomparable Winged House.
