Architect Renovated Farmhouse in historic Warren Village

Bedrooms 3
Space 2,200 sq. ft.
Property type farmhouse
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

3BR / 3BA / Sleeps 12+

Traditional Vermont farmhouse was completely renovated by architect-owner in 2007 to preserve the historic facade while creating a modern interior filled with light from floor-to-ceiling windows and ample open space. The house is can be divided into a main living space with living room, open kitchen, dining and family rooms, two second floor bedrooms with full bathroom + extra toilet and sinks, and a studio with first floor living room, kitchenette and full bathroom with jetted tub and a second floor bedroom. The house is situated directly on Kid Brook, a fast moving stream feeding the Mad River. Children under 14 are permitted to fish the brook; all ages can go wading.

Located in the historic village of Warren, VT, a short (1/3 mile) walk leads to the village center with its general store, antique and craft shops and the top rated (Relais and Chateaux) Pitcher Inn which offers fine dining or casual bar fare. We are located one mile from the access road to Sugarbush Ski Resort.

There is great shopping and dining in the Mad River Valley. Waitsfield (6 miles north on 100) has one of the best book stores we know about anywhere (not big - the owner seems to know every book in the place and they are well chosen). There is a well stocked natural foods store around the corner from the bookstore. There are 2 supermarkets. The wine shop on Route 100 in Waitsfield has some of the best selections and value that we have ever come across. Restaurants (The Common Man - up the access road - and Peasant on Bridge Street in Waitsfield ($$) or Local Folk and American Flatbread ($), both on Route 100.

Green Building Information: This house was designed to be highly energy efficient. The walls, ceiling and floors are super-insulated making it very cozy in winter; primary heating can be achieved by use of the 2 wood stoves with propane gas heating as a supplemental system. Multiple sliding glass doors and windows allow for pleasant air cooling in summer. Toilets are low water consumption. Local materials (Vermont slate floors and counters, barn-board wood) were used throughout.

Ski Information: There are 2 Downhill Ski resorts within 5 miles: Sugarbush/ Mt. Ellen access road is 1 mile up Route 100; Mad River Glen is 5 miles up Route 100. There are 2 Cross-country Ski parks at the top of Brook Road (less than 1 mile up Brook Road): Ole's and Blueberry Lake.

About Tom Piatt

Architect practicing in Boston.

Tom Piatt purchased this farmhouse in 2006

Why Tom Piatt chose Warren

I bought the house in Warren because I think it is the best skiing in the northeast. It emphasizes intermediate to expert. Lots of moguls and glades if you like - and plenty of cruisers. Its trails, not bowl skiing. Sugarbush is 2 resorts (Sugarbush and Ellen) and there is a chair that goes back and forth or you can take the bus. Also Mad River Glen is the original in the area. Mad River Glen is famous for not making snow so in March the natural base actually skis better. We normally get the biggest snow dumps in late February through March. The Mad River valley is also not overdeveloped like Stowe and Killington.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Our house is in the town of Warren so everyone can walk (5 minutes) to the Warren Store for whatever. Across the street from the store is the Pitcher Inn for drinks, or dinner (pub $ fare downstairs, full $$$ fare upstairs). There are 2 cross country facilities with dozens of trails within a mile of the house and plenty of snowshoeing right outside the door.

Delightful home!

  • 5 of 5

This was a wonderful spot to reunite with distant family. (Some stayed at another rental in Warren.) We loved the house! The kitchen is of particular note, as it is so well-equipped, and the long dining table makes entertaining so easy. Can't say enough about the delightful brook-side setting. Kris and Tom were very pleasant and helpful.

Birthday celebration

  • 5 of 5

What a great house to spend a weekend at for our family get together. The location was perfect for a stroll into town for groceries at the famous Warren General Store or a walk up the hill to play a little tennis. We enjoyed making a cozy little fire every morning to sit around and chat about the previous days adventures. Our stay was so peaceful and the house was very comfortable and well equipped that we would definitely return for another visit.

Very Comfortable

  • 4 of 5

Just got back from a great week of skiing.

It was always a delight too come back to this comfortable and well maintained house after a day of skiing.

Mad River and Sugerbush were only a short drive away.

The owners were very easy to deal with and answered all emails promptly.

Beautiful, quiet house next to a stream

  • 5 of 5

I visited Warren for a summer weekend with a group of friends, and we couldn't have been happier with this house. It feels very much like a lived-in home; the kitchen is fully stocked with all the cookware, spices and dinnerware you might have at your own home. The back patio is right next to the river, and is a fantastic place to sit and enjoy a beer while the dog/kids/semi-inebriated adults play in the river. The wood-fired grill was a cool touch, and had wood chopped and ready to go when we arrived.

I admit I was a little put off by the high security deposit, but the owners are being cautious. It is a nice house with nice furniture and amenities - not your typical, cheap rental stuff - so they feel the need to protect themselves. Our group did not have any issues.

We enjoyed the renovated, sunny farmhouse with a great location in Warren Village. We loved the modern furnishings, wood stove and large windows. It's an excellent place for a family gathering. We have stayed here twice and will be back again.

House was as advertised. Clean with well appointed kitchen. Sleeping spaces worked well for our large 13 person group. Communication with owners went well, directions on how everything worked were needed and spot on.

Would recommend.

Historic Warren Village is located in the Mad River Valley. The village has its own covered bridge, general store, country inn with fine dining as well as a spa, antiques and craft stores. We are just outside the Green Mountain National Park and next to the Appalachian and Vermont Long Trails. In Summer there are many performing arts festivals (theatre, circus, movie, opera), arts and craft fairs, weekly farmers' market and horse riding competitions in addition to traditional outdoor activities. This is a thriving agricultural area with an active locavore restaurant scene. Surrounded by forests, Warren is famous for its Fall foliage display in late September-early October. Yestermorrow Design-Build School in Warren offers creative, educational workshops. In Winter there are two down-hill ski resorts (Sugarbush and Mad River Glen), two cross-country ski parks (Ole and Blueberry Lake), sledding (on a Mad River Rocket), ice-skating, snow-shoeing and winter hiking.

Other Activities: canoeing/kayaking
