As of 8 November 2008, Casa Nan is equipped and ready for your visit
As of December 2009, we have a low mileage, excellent condition, Isuzu Rodeo, 2 wheel drive, 5 passenger with auto transmission and air conditioning for hire with our driver to tour guests at a reasonable rate. Please ask about it when enquiring about the house. And a clothes washer for your laundry needs.
San Ignacio and sister town, Santa Elana is Belize's second largest urban area with a population of about 20,000, separated by the Macal River. It is located about 72 miles west from Belize City, and 22 miles west of Belmopan (capital of Belize). 15 miles further west is the Guatemala border. San Ignacio is in the heart of the sight-seeing tours of rivers, waterfalls and Mayan ruins. Venture downtown to one of the local tour guides and plan your days of fun and sun. Their rates are excellent, and its cheaper than renting a car and trying to find your own way to the sights.
We have named the house 'CASA NAN' in honor of my mother. She is now 99 years young, and all through her years, she has always welcomed everyone into her home and hospitality. Our friends, our children's friends, and everyone else call her Nan or Nanny. So in her honor, 'Welcome to CASA NAN'
The house is ideally located on the small hill just 450 yards from the downtown, or just 225 yards from the renowned San Ignacio Resort Hotel. It is on a quiet side street, with paved roads, quiet neighbors and lots of lovely trees and flower gardens. The yard is fully fenced, with a gated driveway and security bars on the windows. Off the master bedroom balcony is a producing grapefruit tree, off the front balcony is a large plum tree. Young banana trees and a coconut palm at the front fence and a huge hibiscus beside the kitchen window. If the trees are in season, be sure to give the fruit a try. The property caregiver lives right next door. If you have any questions, ask him. He is a wealth of Belize and local happenings and history. Not sure where to go, or what to do, he will be most helpful. He will help you arrange a tour of what you want to see and do, and makes it a very personalized experience. He is a big reason why we came to love Belize, and in particular, San Ignacio and area. I am sure you will feel the same way as we do.
The house was purchased in May 2008 and comes with all new furniture and appliances. The kitchen has all the items you will need to feel at home. A trip to the store and the local outdoor fruit and vegetable market and you will be set to enjoy the serenity of your own space, sitting under the trees with a cool drink and listen to the birds. The bedrooms come equipped with their own air conditioners for a cool nights sleep. We have a gas hot water heater for the showers and kitchen.
We have made the house as safe, secure and equipped as possible. If there is something you might require, please feel free to ask the property host, Manuel, for help or advise. A pick up at Belize City airport can be arranged for transport to the house. At this time, the cost is $100 (US Dollars) and is payable to the driver. It fast and efficient and the rate is much cheaper than taking a taxi from the airport. Please advise me when booking the house if you wish to use his service. It is a 1.75 to 2.00 hour journey. He can make himself available at a very reasonable rate to hire him and his vehicle to take your party out and about to the local sights. He is very knowledgable of the area, history, and sights that you might not get to see on your own, or with a commercial tour.
We have visited Mexico on numerous occassions, and never found all of what we were looking for in one place. On our first trip to Belize, we fell in love with the town and the people and the surroundings of San Ignacio. We cancelled the last half of our holiday and stayed in town to complete the dealings with the realtor on the house now know as CASA NAN.
Get some over ripe fruit out on the upper balcony for the birds. Just about sunrise, sit out and relax with a steaming cup of tea or coffee, watch the mist rise up through the trees, and the toucans and parrots come for breakfast.
Had pretty much all we needed but some disappointments: Shower head was hanging off it's pipe, we had to do a repair before we could shower; WIFI didn't work; house reeked of insecticide, had to air out the house but could still smell it strongly...but no roaches; LOTS of dog barking from all over the neighborhood that would go on for hours on end while we were trying to sleep, ended up getting earplugs. Otherwise, it was clean and had all we needed for cooking etc. Owner and caretaker were very nice to work with and we enjoyed our stay and using the house as home base for adventures. We visited Xunantunich, ATM Cave and Tikal. Highly recommend William from Belize Shuttles for getting around, awesome person.
Casa Nan is located in a good spot for touring Cayo...the house was well appointed to keep one comfortable .Even though the house was locked tight...we were robbed while we slept on the first night....computer, cell phone, camera, passport, cash, sunglasses, watches and backpack disappeared. The new property manager could not have been more accommodating...and he really made a disaster much easier to handle. Our second week was spent in a rental in Placencia...and we learned that the previous weeks tenants had also been robbed at Casa Nan...time for better security
The house matched the description and is good value for the money. Lots of room, nice yard, nice decks for morning coffee and afternoon beer. A short walk to town and the farmers market, although a bit of a hill on the walk back. A bit of improvement in plumbing (fix drippy kitchen tap, install a better shower head) would vastly improve the experience. Good way to experience San Ignacio. Be sure to go tubing on the local rivers (Clarissa Falls has tube rentals).
We enjoyed our stay at Casa Nan. Fred was very accommodating when we faced a crisis that delayed our trip by a day and helpful with information for about buses and weather updates. Jaime was very helpful too. A good ambassador for San Ignacio! The house has tiled floors which are nice and cool, a necessity for Belize, not to mention the fan and air conditioning units in each bedroom. Enjoyed our coffees on the deck and my husband especially enjoyed the hammock and listening to the melodious black birds! Our only problem was the shower curtain kept on billowing on to us as we showered, which was a bit disconcerting when something brushes up against you in the tub! Probably would be solved by a magnetized hem. Just a thought! The pool at San Ignacio resort is only a short walk away
and for a small amount you can have a swim. It's a bit of a walk, but the Cahal Pech Resort also allows walk-ins to swim and Oscar at the bar, makes the best cocktails and beautiful too! Ask for his Bailey's colada...an absolute must!
Our first time vacationing outside of the US, we were apprehensive on renting a home from a complete stranger especially one who did not live in Belize. However, with very good communication from the owner of the property, we felt at ease in doing so. Casa Nan was everything it said it was. We were greeted at the airport by Jaime , our Host. All throughout our stay, Jaime was kind, helpful, and very trustworthy. He took us everywhere we wanted to go, and he made sure that we were safe everywhere we went, he was always concerned of that. He became a very good friend and is now part of my family! We especailly appreciated the gated property. The home was clean, and very comfortable. There were a few minor issues. The washing machine was in to be fixed, but was installed in plenty of time for us to do laundry... Also the internet had some issues, but we were not there to be on the internet., and it was resolved in a timely manner as well. The home was perfect for our needs. There were 4 of us, and we had no problem with the sleeping arrangements at all. By the end of each adventurous day, it was good to come "home", shower and walk downtown for dinner. At MayaWalk Tours, we signed up for the ATM, and had a wonderful tour with Arron. Serendib had the best savory rice and beans. Jaime took us into Guatemala for ziplining and a tour of Tikal. He also took us to San Pedro for snorkeling through Amigos del Mar dive shop. Babar and his son Junior were our guides and we had a fantastic time! We shopped at Belize gifts and found everything and more to take home as souvenirs. We had such a wonderful time on this trip. My daughters 30th and my 50th birthday will be a time we will never forget! It was hard to leave and especially hard to say goodbye to Jaime. Thank you so much Casa Nan, and especially Jaime for making a dream come true! We wil definately be back and will most definately stay at Casa Nan! Your friends, Laura, Wendy, Melisa & Mike.
