Water Rock was designed specifically to showcase the incredible natural beauty of the Great Smoky Mountains and to provide an example of mountain area permaculture. The retreat also showcases ever-expanding beautifully landscaped terraced grounds covered with an abundance of gorgeous flowers for the enjoyment of our guests. There is lots of flat yard space for the kids to run around and a great firepit area for nights around the campfire.
Water Rock Garden Retreat is ideal for people who love solitude, unspoiled views, spectacular gardens, wildlife, starry nights and full moons, and the sound of rushing mountain streams in the distance. It is beautiful any time of year!
Water Rock Garden Retreat is located on a 15-acre knoll just outside of Cherokee, North Carolina. At an elevation of 4500 feet, there are breathtaking 360-degree views with a 30-mile view of Tennessee and the great Smoky Mountains National Park.
The property now encompasses a 200-acre tract with a 200-foot waterfall and hiking trails being established to Black Rock - an amazing destination at 5800-feet elevation with a 360-degree panorama as fine as any found within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
The Retreat's ground floor is open and spacious with ten-foot ceilings and a fireplace. The house has four large bedrooms (three upstairs, one downstairs), including a large master bedroom. The rooms are equipped with two queen-sized beds, one full-sized bed, two twin beds, one twin-sized futon, and two twin-sized bunkies. The house has two full baths, an antique claw foot and a wood-fired hot tub! We will provide one set of sheets and blankets for each bed as well as plenty of towels.
The large custom kitchen is well equipped with utensils, dinnerware, pots, pans, and an outdoor grill. The house also has a 500-square-foot, partially covered, cedar deck and an enclosed crow's nest atop for all-weather viewing of the incredible, panoramic view. A wood-fired hot tub awaits you to step in!
The phone is set up to make only local, credit card, or collect calls. Ask us for the phone number at the house.
The Retreat is located three-point-seven miles up a well-maintained (but bumpy in spots) gravel road. Water Rock Garden Retreat is easily accessible by car, SUV and even trucks with trailers. The road dead ends at the cabin. The road is passable by almost any car except under snowy or icy conditions when a four-wheel drive would be necessary. It takes approximately 15 minutes to travel the road. Cars that ride extra low (such as some luxury or sport cars) may not be appropriate. Ask us if you are not sure about yours.
Located 10 miles from Harrah's Casino in Cherokee and the Blue Ridge Parkway, central to the Smoky Mountains Country Club Golf Course and the Great Smoky Mountain Railway Station in Historic Dillsboro where you will find unique shops, galleries, collectables, and crafts.
Centrally located to Maggie Valley, Cherokee, Bryson City and to Rafting and Tubing in the Nantahala Gorge with numerous hiking and biking trails throughout the area. Enjoy outdoor recreation along nearby waterfalls, hike and commune with nature, float the many rivers and streams on tubes or rafts, or visit local area flea markets.
No hunting or shooting on, or near, the retreat, please. We encourage wildlife to stay in the area. While we love our pets, some pets are inappropriate for Water Rock Garden. If you wish to bring a pet, please inquire when making reservations.
I'll start off by saying the views lived up to the expectations. The house sits atop a 4 mile mountain road with panoramic views of the smokies. The fall colors made it even more spectacular!
The mountain road up to the house is something I haven't wuite experienced before...but after the first time it becomes an adventure filled with gorgeous scenery. If you are staying here for the first time...I highly advise showing up before dark. The owners provided very detail instructions but not knowing what to expect still makes it scary. But don't worry! It is well worth it.
The owner, Tama, was nothing but helpful the entire trip. We probably bothered him too much but he continually provided us with anything we asked and went out of his way to make sure we were comfortable.
The only bad thing I can say is that the house had a few bugs inside. It was mostly just ladybugs downstairs and it was never even an issue. They minded their own business and ypu couldn't notice them after a while. Also, if you are going to hike black rock trail near the property make sure to allow ample time. To get to the trail was quite a trek up the mountain road and was all uphill...but it was so beautiful.
Overall my stay could not have been much better. The seclusion, the views, the beautiful house, and time with family makes this place special. I can't wait to come back next year and explore more of the area! Thanks Tama!
Water Rock is that exceptional place in our country that speaks of extreme solitude and peace. Most anywhere in the yard shows another lovely view. The yard itself has been whittled out of the earth with stepping stones, and tunnels through rhododendron. There are even pear trees. The house is comfortable and also has gorgeous mountain views. My two sons and my best friend were there in August 2016 for my wedding anniversary celebration. My husband passed away in November 2015, and to be on the same mountain that we have spent so many anniversaries together was very special to me. My son hiked to Black Rock and sprinkled John's ashes on the rock, with a small ceremony. We had rented Raven's Crest on this same mountain for many years before it was sold. John and I often wanted to rent Water Rock, but it was too big for 2 people. So finally, I was privileged to stay there. Thank you Tama.
Perfect! The view takes your breath away. Perfect retreat can't wait to share wedding photos with Tama. We will be back!!!
Pros: Views are amazing and the ability to go on hikes without having to get in the car is great.
Cons: For the amount paid per night there was a certain level of expectation on the overall look and feel of the house. It's not advertised in the description but the only source of heat is the fireplace, gas heater in the dining area, and portable heaters in the rooms, arriving on a cold night and walking into a really cold house was unpleasant especially since it takes a while for the fire to get going and the heaters to start warming the place up. The cleanliness in the kitchen was off putting, the exterior of the oven needed a good scrubbing, you could see old food caked into the grooves on the face of the oven door. We moved the granite cutting board after using it to ensure we cleaned up all our mess to find that it apparently hasn't been moved in a really long time because the counter top behind it was filthy. The floors throughout the down stairs could have used a more thorough sweeping and a good mopping. A used lancet for testing blood was found on the floor under one of the beds. Laundry room had a strong cat litter box odor. And the bugs, there were a lot of bugs in the house, crickets, wasps and lady bugs. We get that will happen from time to time, esp in a location like this, but it just seemed rather excessive, esp the amount of lady bugs. In addition to the cleanliness there were just several cosmetic items that could have given the home a more well put together feeling and it would have been a cheap fix, examples include putting the cover over the light switch by the front door, a fresh coat of paint to cover the years of scuff marks and general use marks, esp in the upstairs bathroom, and bedroom doors, adding window treatments in the kitchen so when you're cooking at the stove you're not shielding your eyes from the sun with one hand while cooking with the other, replacing the frame or box spring on the master bedroom bed, hard to sleep when every time you move there is a sustaining rattle of metal.
Overall we understand this is a rental and gets used by a lot of people but for the amount charged per night there has to be more than enough money in the maintenance budget to hire more through cleaners, remedy the bug situation, and freshen up the worn interior.
Thanks for a different kind of stay.
This house was absolutely perfect for us. The views are amazing. As a family we had a great time just reconnecting and hanging out. We never used the hot tub, but we had a great time grilling in the evenings and making smores with the fire pit. We are definitely working on plans to stay here again. We could not have asked for any better place to stay and enjoy. The owners are great, answered any questions I had prior to our trip and even though we didn't have, I am sure any I would have had once we got there. Can't wait for the opportunity to visit again.
