I opted to stay here, instead of a corporate hotel for a few days for work. I'm so glad that I did. The cottage is very charming and spacious. I hadn't used a clawfoot tub before, so that was a bonus! The location is really great, too. It's about a 4 block walk to a variety of restaurants, bars and shops. I' hope to return with my mom/sister some day and show them around. Karen included bagels, cream cheese, orange juice, and even half & half for the coffee - which is a big perk to me vs the powder creamer or chemical stuff that doesn't expire. I was starving when I got there from traveling, so it was so nice to have something. There are families in the houses around the cottage. I found the sounds from them to be comfortable/not so isolated like a hotel. Was nice to feel part of a community. I didn't have any trouble finding parking within a block of the place the few days I was there. Karen was very responsive & welcoming
The two things I would comment on that others have mentioned are, the front step is a bit steep (it's a bit of a balancing act to lock the door when you leave) and the clawfoot tub is a bit awkward to shower in with the surround shower curtain thing pressing against you.
Another tip is that some of the local restaurants are not open on Monday or Tuesday night. So if you're planning to go somewhere, check ahead to make sure they're open.
The quality toiletries that came with the cottage were much appreciated. I hope to return some day.
Quiet corner of Alameda
This is a beach cottage in back of a house in a quiet area of Alameda. You do need a car if you want to go to Oakland but access is easy. Street parking is easy. The unit is very clean and well stocked. The owner wAs kind enough to leave bagels, cream cheese, juice and a lovely bottle of wine. Only two negatives.... the front stairs are steep and badly need to be sanded and painted... my wife had a hard time with them, secondly better lighting is needed in the bathroom. Overall a positive experience and certainly would stay here again.
Thanks for the lovely note you left, I'm glad you enjoyed your stay. Also, thanks for the heads up about the bathroom light. You didn't mention it in the note you left, but I'll make sure we take care of that.
Regarding the steps, the pictures that I provide show that there are steps to the apartments. The Guest Cottage only has four steps, but I'm so sorry they didn't work for your wife.
Thanks again Gerald, you're welcome back anytime!
Great little cottage, with everything we needed!
Karen's cottage is so nice! Perfect size for me and my husband as we celebrated our 20th Anniversary! Karen checked in twice to make sure all was well! Great location as well! We will be back!
Thanks so much Erin for a great review, and congratulations on your 20th Anniversary! I wish I had known; I would have done something special to help you celebrate. I'll be happy to reserve the Guest Cottage same time next year for you if you'd like, and I'll help you plan something special for your 21st!
Love apts, hate hotels
I gave this a 5 star review because of the location, the cleanliness of the unit, and the quick response from Karen for a last minute reservation. Karen also provided a Keurig with lots of coffees and other drinks. She put bagels, cream cheese and orange juice in the refrig. You can see from the pictures that this is an older house which is typical for Alameda.
I do have a warning, if this applies to you. I am a 76 year old woman and was staying there alone. I did find the front steps steep and hard for me to get my small suitcase up and down. I was also concerned with the clawfoot tub being the shower as it was difficult for me to get in and out.
Thanks for your review, and I’m glad I could accommodate you with such short notice. I hope your son is doing well, and I’m glad you enjoyed the breakfast treats I left for you. Regarding the tub, most people have enjoyed the claw foot tub, but I can understand and appreciate that it didn’t work well for you.
Wishing you and your son all the best!
The apartment met my needs well with no problems.
Apartment was very clean and well equiped. It is not ideal for an older person with steps at the entrance and a shower that is a little clumsy to use. The bed is on the firm side.
Thank you for your comments.
Sorry you had trouble with the stairs – there are only 3 steps and I’ve had older couples stay at the Guest Cottage before with no problems. In fact, they are some of my repeat guests. The tub is a claw foot tub, there are pictures of it on the website - many of my guests find it to be very relaxing. My apologies that these didn’t work well for you.
You're welcome back anytime!
Like stepping back in time
I came to Alameda to visit my elderly father. I was seeking a place to stay where I could just be in his company...a hotel room was not an option. Neptune beach cottage was perfect for my needs. It is a cozy and comfortable apartment decorated with impeccable taste in a 1940-ish style. It is an easy walk to the Webster Street cafe and a short drive to beaches and the SF ferry. Karen, the hostess, is gracious. Thank you for sharing your piece of paradise.
Thank you for such a wonderful review! It was such a pleasure meeting you and your father and I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay.
Guests like you make it all worth while, so please come back and visit again. You're welcome anytime!
Located 5 minutes from the Alameda Main Street Ferry Terminal, 5 minutes from Alameda Point, and 5 minutes from Crown Memorial State Beach.
