About Mike Hislop
Mike and Doreen Hislop have lived in Edinburgh all our lives, and are very proud of our city. Newly retired we have bought Patriothall for what eventually will be our Edinburgh base, as we plan to retire to the west coast of Scotland. We have 3 daughters and 3 grandchildren all living in Edinburgh. We stay only 10 minutes from the apartment so are always on hand for any issues or just advice.
Mike Hislop purchased this Apartment in 2015
Why Mike Hislop chose Edinburgh
When we were looking for a property, we wanted something just a bit 'different', and when this apartment came up for sale we just snapped it up. There is a lot of history, as it was built around 1900 for the Cooperative Society, and was used as their stables and workshops, where all the milk carts left for their daily rounds - hence the very unusual cobbled stoned courtyard, which is now the secure car park for the building. The property is a listed building, and was converted into very tasteful apartments, in the 1980's. What we loved was obviously the inside of the apartment, with its large industrial windows and light. But probably most, was the lovely patio area at the back and the free secure parking - in the centre of Edinburgh, both are like gold-dust!!
What makes this Apartment unique
10 minutes walk from the Castle and centre of Edinburgh A real local village with everything - shops, restaurants, coffee houses, pubs, food markets etc etc Secure Parking Lovely Patio area, for the very warm Edinburgh summers!! ( I joke) Ground floor, and disabled access Well maintained surroundings Listed building status Water of Leith just opposite
100% refund if canceled at least 60 days before arrival date. 50% refund if canceled at least 30 days before arrival date.
Short walk to downtown and close to restaurants and grocery store.
Nice old building that has been converted to a modern, well appointed flat with all of the amenities you will need for a comfortable stay.
Our hosts answered our many questions right away and there was great information in the flat for operating the appliances etc.
We hope to return to Edinburgh and would definitely stay here again.
Thank you for a great home away from home experience!

Contemporary but comfy.
A nice, modern, comfortable, well equipped apartment in a quiet upmarket location. Really rather good overall. The owners are extremely pleasant too.
Many thanks for your kind review. I’m glad you had such a good time. Edinburgh is so lively at Christmas it makes for a great city break. Haste ye back.
What a great place in a excellent position to reach everything
A truly amazing place is Edinburgh... our trip 7th-10th December....we received directions and instructions to the apartment on how to find and get in were really easy to follow ( unless like me you find two key holders lol) once inside you have secure parking for you car which is awesome in any city and trust me it’s more fun to walk around ... the apartment itself is self contained very cosy and comfy with your very own patio...everything was there even a welcome pack of bubbly and shortbread which was later enjoyed 😊 couldn’t ask for a better position everything you could want is in walking distance but the public transport is very good... we came for the Christmas markets and boy did they live up to there name loved every single minute of our stay...mike our host was unbelievable friendly and very helpful and was always reachable to answer any questions...highly recommend to any of my friends and family and look forward to going back next summer...
Thanks for such a great review Lou. It was a pleasure to host you, and hope you will come back in the summer. The Edinburgh Festival and Tattoo is even better than the Christmas festivities ....just!! Haste ye back.
Fantastic apartment in exactly the right location for exploring the City.
The apartment is straightforward to find and easily accessible by car. It is located close to the centre of Edinburgh, just 10 minute drive away from main landmarks (well, if traffic permits :-)). Princess Street can be reached within 15 - 20 minutes of casual stroll, there are convenient bus links nearby and the buses are generally very reliable and good value for money. We kept our car parked up at Patriothall for most of the time and used public transport instead. The buses run until late evening, there are some night services too.
Quite conveniently, Patriothall is tucked away from all the hustle and bustle in quiet and secure spot and the feel is genuinely friendly, warm and welcoming.
Located conveniently on the ground floor of old workshop/warehouse building, large windows and brick facade give it nice, modern vibe. The interior itself is spacious, bright and nicely decorated, giving warm, homely feeling.
There are all amenities we could possibly need during our short stay, the apartment is nicely laid out and comfortable. The outdoor space is fairly limited, but it's not a criticism at all, rather stating the fact - such are the drawbacks of apartment's location in converted workshop courtyard.
A lot of praise should be devoted to our lovely hosts, Mike and Doreen, who were at every step engaging and offering help. We did not need anything that wasn't already provided, but should you require anything I'm sure Mike and Doreen would do anything possible to satisfy one's wishes. The directions and information provided is clear and easy to follow
Should we need a place to stay in Edinburgh anytime in the future I would most definitely consider this particular apartment and will genuinely recommend it to anyone.
Mike, Doreen - thank you so, so much for your hospitality, you are the perfect hosts and this apartment is simply outstanding.
Pawel. Thank you so much for your terrific review, but more to the point we are glad you enjoyed your stay.
Haste ye back!!
Tidy and comfortable place, nice contemporary warehouse conversion in pretty Stockbridge location, easy to get into centre (15-20 mins walking), and lovely walks along the Water of Leith. Very quiet because of its secluded position (but note that you have to walk back into a sort of alleyway, which at night may keep a city person's radar on alert; I felt fine, but if you're nervous about empty streets at night it could feel unsettling).
Just to clarify Peter’s comment on the ‘alleyway’ location to get to courtyard. From the main busy road you go through a vannel which is the length of a small shop, and is between 2 shops with flats above. It is not at all threatening and has caused no issues to any guests over the last three years. Through the vennel it opens up to the wonderful small area of Patriothall. Because it is behind the buildings and shops on the main road of Hamilton Place it makes it a very quiet area and a great retreat from the hustle and bustle of the busy Stockbridge village.
Wonderful stay in Stocbridge
Patriothall Hall had everything we could want for our stay - spacious, comfortable, secure, clean. The location was ideal for accessing central Edinburgh, and for attending a variety of Fringe events. We attended shows in Pleasance Courtyard, The Underbelly, the EICC and The Playhouse, everything was in walking distance. Mike was at pains to make sure we had all the information we needed before, and during, the visit.
Thanks for such a great review. Location location location as they say!! Stockbridge is such a vibrant place and so close to city centre, as you say. What our guests love is that Patriothall is so quiet at night, giving the ideal pit stop after a busy day of sightseeing.
Haste ye back.
Stockbridge, Edinburgh is known as the most popular cosmopolitan area in Edinburgh - it has literally everything you could want for a city break, all within a stones throw!
