One bedroom stone cottage full of character on the edge of the Somerset Levels.
About Gill Cumming
Ten years ago when Gill and James first saw Panniers Farm they dreamt of planting a vineyard on the wonderful south facing slope and make English wine from this very special place. Now we have two parcels of vines and a small winery producing award winning still and sparkling wines as well as traditional Somerset cider.
Why Gill Cumming chose Wells
This is a truly wonderful place to come and relax in peaceful Somerset countryside, being on the edge of the Mendip Hills and the Somerset Levels, with Wells and Glastonbury within a few miles. The cottage is on a vineyard producing English sparkling and still wines, offering vineyard and winery tours and tastings. A range of Somerset craft ciders are also made here. Seasonal fresh produce such as salads are available, as well as eggs from our free range hens. Our small flock of friendly Suffolk sheep roam freely on the hillside. Take a short walk through the lanes to the local goat farm in the village and sample their delicious range of goats cheeses and milk, and lots of friendly goats to pet! On the edge of the Somerset Levels, this is a fantastic area for bird watching with three reserves close by: RSBP Shapwick Heath, Ham Wall and West Hay, where afternoons can be spent watching the starling formations. There are also many great walks, being at the foot of the Mendip Hills - an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Ebbor Gorge and Deer Leap are a few minutes away by car. After a long day of walking, what could be better than visiting one of the many traditional local pubs before retiring in front of the open fire. There are three pubs within walking distance,The Pheasant Inn at Worth being at the bottom of the lane. The Sheppey Inn at Godney, just a fifteen minute drive away is well worth a visit, the quirky pub has been rated one of the best British pubs - "Its exterior gives no hint of the wonders within", serves up delicious gastropub food and puts on many gigs and monthly music nights. This is also an area rich in heritage, located just outside the historic city of Wells, one of England's smallest cities, with its beautiful buildings, cobbled streets and an old market place, where there is a large farmer's market held on Wednesday morning. The Cathedral and the Bishop's Palace are well worth a visit. Bath and Bristol are only a forty five minute drive away.

We stayed 5 nights in June 2019. This charming stone cottage was very well equipped and featured a most comfortable bed. Our hosts Gill and James offered a friendly, relaxed atmosphere and were happy to chat and suggest walks, advice on pubs and features of the area. We really enjoyed Wells, particularly the Bishops Palace and found Wookey provided a nice glimpse of life in a rural English village. We could have stayed much longer and highly recommend this property.
Nice, relaxing stay
We visited the cottage for Christmas. Generally, we enjoyed the stay, however the cottage could have been better equipped and cleaner. The kitchen is lacking in basics – no soup ladle, very few glasses/ cups and not enough basic utensils. The TV is tiny, computer screens are bigger these days. This is something we wouldn’t mind in the summer when you spend most of the time outside, but in the middle of the winter during Christmas we spend quite a bit of time in front of TV as normally there is no time for this. Bathroom is dated with constant “drain like/sewage” smell. We have been visiting different places in last 5 years during Christmas time so have a bit of comparison. For the price paid we’d expect more. It is a beautiful cottage with a lot of character, it just needs a bit of updating.
Thank you for taking the time to write about your stay at the cottage. we appreciate feedback whether its good or bad and we use it to make sure our standards are kept as high as possible.
Many of the things you mentioned could have been sorted out during your stay if you had let us know. It is very important to communicate with us if you are unhappy. We would have been more than happy to sort out the issues with the bathroom, extra kitchen equipment and the TV, all of which are no longer a problem.
We are really sorry that you didn't enjoy your stay in our cottage, I only wish you had communicated that, with us at the time.
We loved this cottage and had a very peaceful and restful weekend. It had everything we needed and was beautifully presented. Our dog, Poppy, felt immediately at home too and loved walks in the fields and the surrounding area. Gill was very helpful and friendly and we had a very enjoyable at the local pub. Thank you very much.
Quiet and cosy cottage
Enjoyed our stay. Ideally situated for our needs. The dog loved it and was very interested in the chickens. Good food at The Pheasant.
Tranquil and comfortable, a perfect getaway.
We loved our stay, great walks with the dog around the area. The cottage was well equipped and peaceful. We went on a wine tour with James which was informative, we have a greater appreciation of what it takes to enjoy a glass. The Orgata white is lovely!
Jill made sure we knew what there was to do and things to see, they were warm and welcoming but not intrusive!
The wood burner made the little nook all the more homely. We hope to return with Poppy dog soon.
Lovely cottage in beautiful surroundings.
Stayed here for a week in September, lovely small cottage in the deep countryside. The lanes around here are like a maze. Very clean well looked after property, looking at the visitor book it gets alot of use, so it must be hard to keep it looking good. The bed was comfy, if on the small side, we are used to kingsize. The bathroom is adequate, with a shower over the bath and plenty of very hot water. The outside space is very nice, we had breakfast outside most mornings and we were joined by the Long Tailed Tits. The kitchen has a few shortcomings for a property of this price. We found ourselves using the diswasher nearly everday due to lack of plates and cups, the utensils are basic and sadly lacking in quality, however it didn't spoil our holiday.
The owners were friendly and live on site, they do go past your house most days to get to the vineyard, but they don't bother you and most of the time we didn't know they were there.
Overall I would recommend this cottage, if you like the deep countryside, yet its only 2 or 3 miles into the lovely city of Wells, this is perfect. I'm only giving it four stars, because I feel that for nearly £600 in mid September I expect better equipment and a bigger bed!!
