We spend a week at The Kona Lighthouse. Our group was 7 adults and one 2 year old. Our family with the child stayed in the master bedroom where they had their own bathroom. Two couples stayed both in other bedrooms where they joined the bathroom. Our single stayed downstairs in his own little apartment.
Everything in the house was like it was in the web pages. No bad suprises at all. The Magic Sands beach was in the walking distance from the house.
The communication and the renting process was very easy with the owners. Our requests conserning the money transfer and everything else were fulfilled.
The renting experience, which was our first, was very pleasing.
We (group of 10, comprising 2 families) stayed at this property and absolutely loved it. There was enough space to accommodate us and the house was stocked with everything that we needed to cook and enjoy the nearby beaches. The ocean view and sunsets were spectacular, nice beaches and tide pools close by, and shops and restaurants were relatively close. I particularly loved the books left in each room as it gave me things to do when I was not out and about. The board games were great and it was great to see our teenage kids disconnect for a while and play with each other. Pool was great as well.
The Home Away app was disappointing and I did not get the codes for the garage or the lockbox with the house key over the app even though the message said 'click link below to get entry information' There was no such link. However, I called Wendy from my layover in Seattle and she gave me this information promptly. Thank you for that.
I had read some reviews citing maintenance issues, but I did not see anything that would prevent me from considering this property again if I were to return to Hawaii. I spend a lot of time traveling and in hotel rooms, so I appreciate being able to be in a home environment on this vacation. I also do not expect everything to be perfect as you would in a hotel/resort room/suite.
The one thing I was disappointed by was by my expectation (based on Picture 6 in Row 1) titled 'Ocean Across the Street' that there was a large grassy yard with direct access to the coast road from the property. That is actually the neighbor's property separated by a rock wall. So the one piece of advice would be caption this appropriately to make sure there is no future misunderstanding. To be fair, there is nothing explicit in the property description that says you have direct access to that road. In hindsight, I should not have assumed that, but this was also my first experience renting from VRBO.
Did this take away from our overall enjoyment of the property and vacation? Absolutely not, and I would love to come back some time. I would have loved to meet our hosts to thank them for the opportunity to use this property for our wonderful time in Hawaii. Mahalo.
The lighthouse is perfect for multiple families. It is well equipped for small children and babies, with a crib and pack any play.
We stayed here with 6 adults, 2 young children and one baby, plenty of space and privacy, nice pool and lots of beach equipment!
Had a lovely stay, and the owners are great, friendly and very helpful!
We enjoyed our time at the Kona Lighthouse.
The pros: good location, kitchen well stocked with utensils and appliances, excellent view, lap pool was perfect for young children, quiet neighbourhood, lots of beach and pool equipment, two high chairs and cribs provided (one crib mattress was very soft so we rented a mattress), beds were adequate, bathroom facilities were okay. The large rooms and openness of the upstairs was great for hosting our 3 family holiday.
Cons: a number of the railing dowels had to be screwed down for safety but this was quickly corrected - more repairs/updating could be recommended around the railings/stairs/deck area, only one bathtub (a large soaker tub) in the house and it didn't have a working plug which was awkward with small children. Screen door to deck area could be improved.
Overall, we enjoyed our stay!
Thank you so much for sharing your property! We arrived in the evening, exhausted, and were greeted by the smell of flowers, the sound of the waves and porch light on. The pictures don't do this house justice! Bigger than we had envisioned, open and plenty of space for our extended family.
The lower level was perfect for my 2 teenage nephews, we called their shower the "Gilligan Shower". They named their gecko buddies (one was Gregory, I can't remember the rest).
Wendy, my only thought was there needs to be a dumbwaiter somewhere 😉we wore ourselves out so much during the days, the stairs were my nemesis at the end for unloading. Just took planning, great that all had kid gates for when our friends with littles visited.
Loved, loved, loved our stay, ready to come back ASAP! Thank you Wendy and Harry, for everything! Tony, Jessica, Jennifer, William, Myles and Mama Marcy
We loved our week here! The home included everything anyone would need right down to the beach necessities. The owners went above and beyond our expectations. Highly recommend.
