Vistas magníficas

  • 4 of 5

Espero volver a verles.

The coastal town of Begur lies against a 200m hill in the province of Gerona, Catalonia, Spain. It is a small place, with an area of about 8 square kilometers and a population of about 4’100 people, but it still retains its strong historical personality. Begur is situated in Baix Empordà, known to be a chic part of the Costa Brava. Here you will find no noisy campgrounds or large hotels. The environment is characterised by calm, pine-covered hills, a unique and varied coastline, small bays, old Roman towns, beautiful golf courses, dozens of typically Spanish restaurants, beautiful nature, and small, tidy beaches. The beauty of this part of the coast has been left untouched. Here you will find no mass-tourism, only crystal-clear water at beaches surrounded by pine tree forests. Begur lies 200m above sea level and has one of the best views of the Mediterranean Sea . Begur offers different residential areas where you can find luxury holiday rental villas, houses, homes and holiday rental apartments.

Begur - Costa Brava - Spain History of Begur

Begur’s history tells of coral divers, fishers, ‘Indianos’ (rich emigrants who had returned from Spain’s colonies in the West Indies ), and cork producers. You can rediscover it in every street, in every house, and on every street corner of this enchanting little town. Strategically located at the top of the hill lies Castle Begur. It was built in the 11th century by Arnust the Begur to combat sea pirates who prowled along this coastline in the 16th and 17th centuries. 10 Watch towers were added to the castle’s defense system later on, of which 5 can still be found spread out over the town. The 18th and 19th centuries brought progress and mercantilism to Begur. Remnant hallmarks of this period are the unique mansions, villas that are different from the surrounding architecture. Today, tourism is an important source of income for the residents of Begur, but this inevitable development hasn´t done any harm to the town’s historical and cultural heritage.

Natural environment of Begur

The province of Gerona is rich in nature. Even outside its nature preserves you will find a beautiful, wooded landscape.

Nature Preserves

- Parque Nacional de l´Albera

- Parque Nacional de Montseny

- Parque Nacional de Cap de Creus - here, the foothills of the Pyrenees end abruptly into the sea

- Parque Nacional dels Aiguamolls de LEmpord - a marsh (aiguamoll) harbouring many different species of waterfowl

- Parque Nacional de la zona Volcánica de Garrotas - an area peppered with extinct volcanoes

- Parque Nacional de les Illes Medes - a forested area on the Montgrí cliff bordered by a coastline ending at the Illes Medes

Cuisine of Begur

The Begur kitchen is very regional, with diverse traditional dishes that feature fish and shellfish such as Suquet de Peix (bowl of fish), Sarsuela (fish soup), and Paella de Marisc (paella with fish and other seafood). Many restaurants offer this traditional cuisine, which is also served at home. The rice dishes, the ‘surf and turf’ combinations, the internationally renounced stews – be surprised by the variety of tastes and aromas.

Wine of Begur

The Ampurdan (Empordà in Catalan) wine region of the Costa Brava covers an area of 2’000 hectares, with 28 bodegas that produce an annual average of about 65’000 hL of wine. According to archaeologists, winemaking was introduced here by the Phoenicians in the 5th century BC. The Romans, and later the Benedictines, perfected the method. The wine region on the French side of the border was once a part of the Catalonian-Aragonian kingdom.

The first Catalonian documents concerning wine date back to 1130 CE and were written by Father Ramón Pere de Novas in the Sant Pere de Roda monastery. Just as the Penedés, this region for a long time produced the heavy rancio and sweet wines that were so popular in this part of the Mediterranean. These days you can try some wonderful young red wines.

Begur Beaches

The unique bays of Begur’s coastline reveal beaches with crystal-clear water surrounded by vegetation and rock cliffs, but are at the same time easily accessible. The town’s infrastructure and the fact that you can enjoy the town’s Mediterranean climate all year long make Begur a unique little place.

- Del Racó: Sand beach of 300m x 65m with restaurants, car park, showers, toilets, handicap accessible, and parasol or sun chair rental.

- Illa Roja: A nudist beach of 80m x 20m that is only accessible on foot or by boat.

- Sa Riera: Sand beach of 300m x 65m with a large boulevard, restaurants, car park, toilets, showers, telephone, first aid, and all handicap accessible.

- Aiguafreda: Rock beach of 25m x 15m, ideal place to anchor a boat. It has a restaurant, shower, car park, handicap accessible.

- Sa Tuna: Attractive, inhabited bay with gravel beach of 100m x 35m, featuring restaurants, car park, shower, telephone, first aid, and handicap accessible.

- Platja Fonda: In a beautiful, set-apart bay and situated between rock formation, a sand beach of 160m x 35m that is only accessible on foot or by boat. Here, you literally are in the middle of nature.

- Nucli Fornells: Comfortable little gravel beach of 20m x 5m with restaurants and a telephone.

- Aiguablava: Sand beach of 90m x 45m in a natural setting and with restaurants, car park, showers, toilet, first aid, all handicap accessible, and parasol or sunchair rental.

Things worth seeing in and around Begur

We highly recommend an outing on foot to the top of the hill, not only for the characteristic streets with typical mansions, but also because you will be rewarded at the end of the hike with a wonderful view of Begur and the surrounding area, with a visibility of up to 60 miles. You can also vist the remaining watch towers. A good example is the tower at Mas Pinc, a little outside the town, which houses a cultural centre. Another tower can be found at Casa Pella i Forgas, named after a historical figure who once lived there. During your outing you will find typical, coloured boxes that are nailed to the walls. The town seems to be cat-friendly, because these boxes are there to provide the wandering quadrupeds with food and drink. La Plaça de la Vila, the lively central plaza, is the recommended place to sit and rest on one of the many terraces after your trip. The children will find it enjoyable to visit the Toy Museum in the nearby plaza Sant Feliu de Guixols. For more information: www.museudelajoguina.com

You can also make day trips to other coastal towns, such as Llafranc and Calella de Palafrugel, a short 15 minutes drive. Should you have extra time, then you cannot afford to miss the beautiful, nearby Medieval city of Gerona, with her many impressive Roman and Gothic structures and pleasant Saturday market. A visit to Barcelona is a must. It is one of the most cosmopolitan and cultural cities in the world. You can admire the fantastic architecture of Gaudi, visit the Picasso Museum, and take a stroll down Las Ramblas.
