Overview

About the property

Expansive ocean view, studio cottage, 1 queen bed, full kitchen, BBQ, 1 Bath

The billion dollar view of the ocean and coastal pasture makes guests exclaim "wow" as they enter the dutch doors of this cozy cottage.

This is a place to relax. The tensions ease as you drive leisurely through Hana Town, then as you spot the chaise on the cottage lanai, Hana Paralysis set in.

With the 180 degree ocean view you can watch the whales play and hear them sing at night. The calves lazily graze through the pasture below with the Big Island of Hawaii off in the distance.

For the more adventurous, there are hikes, beaches, and waterfalls all along the Hana Highway. A small fresh water pond is only 1/4 mile down the road.

About Michelle Horen

We do accept one and two night stays less than 30 days prior to arrival. Please inquire for rates and availability.

Michelle Horen purchased this studio in 1956

Why Michelle Horen chose Hāna

Koali Ranch Cottage started out as a vacant lot set aside for a school house. In 1955, the Territory of Hawaii decided that it did not need a school there and auctioned it. My parents were successful bidders. The Territory insisted that the house be erected within a year. The cottage was designed by local architect John Tatum working with island famous Val Ossipoff.

What makes this studio unique

Stressed out people come here to unwind. If you don't want to unwind, you probably should stay on the glitsy side of Maui, Kaanapali, Wailea, Kihei. In fact, people who live on that side come to Koali Ranch Cottage just to calm down.

Notes:
Many of all who visit our web, make reservations. They all say the photos on the web don't do the place justice. Everyone declare the view spectacular. There are 70 acres of government preserve between the cottage and the shore. Even so, when the whales are here (Dec/Apr), you can hear them splash and see them jump. Cattle and a few horses abound in the preserve you can watch their calves frolic. A thoroughly restful place.

Staying at your little cottage overlooking the sea was the highlight of our stay on Maui

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay in Hana. Your cottage was small, compact, well-stocked, and tastefully decorated in old Hawaiian style decor. Located on the other side of Hana, it was quiet and serene. The most outstanding feature was the back porch where we sat for hours reading our books and enjoying the ambience...dolphins frolicking in the ocean below, dragonflies, butterflies, bees, birds, and of course...the friendly cows in the pasture below the porch. It is a perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life....to heal, restore, write, and contemplate.

It is also halfway between the two wonderful parks with wonderful hiking and photography opportunities. The black sand beach, the red sand beach, numerous waterfalls and natural swimming pools (not accessible due to heavy rains the week prior to our stay), and wonderful food (Huli chicken, Thai, Travaasa breakfast, etc). We stayed 3 nights, and wished we'd stayed longer...there is a lot to do and see. It was such a marvelous contrast to the glitzy high-end hotel/villas that are on the west/south side of Maui where we spent our other 2 1/2 weeks. We are hoping to return next year.

a fine place to stay

  • 5 of 5

I hesitate to write such a positive review, as I fear that I will not find it available the next time we try to book it. We greatly appreciate the care and attention that go into making this one of the loveliest spaces we've ever stayed in, and, as stated above, we hope to be back.

Nice cottage with great view

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay in this small cottage very much. The landscape is very scenic and the cottage has everything one will need. We reported a clogged kitchen sink to the caretaker on our first day, but it wasn't repaired despite a reminder.

Owner's Response: I am so sorry that you had to put up with the lousy drainage. We are glad that you had a chance to enjoy the view and many other delights of Hana. We are taking steps so that future guests may avoid the cloogged sink. We are making do with draino now, but plumbers are hard to find in Hana. We have one scheduled two weeks from now. Thank you for your comments. Aloha, Chuck Gray

Spectacular view, roomy and easy to live in, private, clean, with all necessary items!

  • 5 of 5

Close, but not too close to Hana and the national Park, this private cottage features a 180° view of the sea. Sunrise, sunset are part of the experience, along with Mauna Kea across the water. One feels connected with the elemental forces that have shaped Hawaii. The flow of the place is smooth, and lovely cross breezes bring the outside in. Kitchen complete with many extras, olive oil salad dressing, etc. Outside charcoal grill a definite plus! Well-maintained and very clean. We look forward to returning!

Gliding, swim in mountain pools just a 5 minute walk away. 20 minutes away from the Haleakala National Park named for tourists as the Seven Sacred Pools. Most people nap on the lanai and wake up in time to spot the shining telescope dome

atop Mauna Kea on the island of Hawaii. Then they enjoy the swirling colors as the sun sets. You don't see the sun go into the ocean, but if it rains you can often see rainbows over the ocean).
