Overview

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4-6)

If you are looking for a relaxing getaway, this Rye Key house is the place for you. Located in Cedar Key, Rye Key is a small gated community of fewer than 15 houses. Our house offers the ultimate in quiet and privacy. It is located on a short street with only two other houses and on a lagoon shared with only one other house. Although every room has many windows, curtains seem unnecessary for privacy. This quiet privacy is only two miles from the historic commercial area of Cedar Key, easily reached by car, golf car or bicycle.

The light-filled, tile-floored house features two bedrooms separated by a great room. Each bedroom has a queen size bed, bathroom, sliding glass doors and a small covered porch. The great room has a living area with leather furniture, a dining area and a sun porch with a wall of floor to ceiling windows overlooking the water. The fully equipped kitchen is separated from the great room by a bar with stools.

There are porches on both the land and water sides of the great room. A private dock allows access to the water. Fish for red fish, kayak, canoe or simply sit and watch the tide change. The lagoon is home to many varieties of birds, including herons, egrets and osprey. Mullet jump, catfish and stingrays swim in the shallows, the big red fish feeds on the oyster bars and, occasionally, a dolphin visits.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We thoroughly enjoyed our days in your beautiful home in Cedar Key. It was exactly what we wanted – secluded, scenic, quiet and full of wildlife. We really enjoyed the sunsets on the dock!

Great views and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

This is the second time we’ve stayed here. The first time was six years ago. We liked it so much that we made this our destination vacation this summer. The house needs some upkeep on the outside but don’t let that fool you. We cooked breakfast, lunch and dinner for the week and everything (except food) was readily available to use. There are extra towels and blankets along with other basics. The flooring and furniture is just what you want in a rental; Comfortable but also easy to clean. The washer and dryer worked great. The views of the water from the house plus the dock you can hang out on make it a great place to stay. Check in and check out was easy. I look forward to staying here again some day.

Fabulous setting, Quiet and in a unique town

  • 5 of 5

Cedar Key definitely ranks as a “must return to” destination. Loads of history, genuine, friendly people and plenty to do. The property is within a gated community and has a huge living room, well-appointed kitchen and two good sized bedroom suites. Plenty of passing wildlife and within easy reach of numerous parks and trails.

We are nature lovers, birdwatchers and biologists and loved this place!

  • 5 of 5

As nature lovers and biologists, we found this place to be perfect for us. It's a couple of miles out of town. We are in our 60s now and have gotten a bit lazy, so this time it was nice to have a house with all the conveniences. We especially liked the long private dock out to the marsh. We could sit at the end with our binoculars and watch an endless parade of shore birds: Brown Pelicans, Great Egrets, White Ibis, Roseate Spoonbills, and squawky Clapper Rails darting in and out of the marsh grass, to name just a few. A bit of advice: bring your bug spray out on the dock with you, as the no-see-ems can get bothersome when the air is still. This area specializes in oysters, and many birds feed at low tide on the mud/oyster flats in front of the house. Looking back toward the land, you can frequently see Ospreys.

We rented a canoe from the extremely nice and helpful couple at Cedar Key Paddling, Dan and Ariel. We kept it tied up to the dock for the duration of our stay and took it out fishing and bird watching several times a day, as the tides allowed. (They offer to pick up and drop off their clients and canoes to any of eight drop-off areas around the island, so that you can have a variety of paddling experiences.)

House owner Anne Young was helpful, pleasant, and very responsive, yet left us to our own devices unless we needed something. The house was very comfortable, with a great room with a bank of (new) windows overlooking the water. Even though it was on the older side, the important equipment was all there; indeed they seem to be slowly updating things. The appliances are all new: stove, dishwasher, fridge, washer/dryer. The AC worked fine, although we kept it above 75 so we could crack open the windows at night and hear the tree crickets singing. The kitchen equipment was perfectly adequate for us -- we cook, but are not foodies. It does not have things like blenders and Cuisinarts for gourmet cooks, but it has a toaster, microwave, and coffee maker. There is no outdoor grill.

The two bedrooms are fine and the beds are comfortable. The master suite continues the windows-overlooking-the-marsh theme. Its bathroom has a shower/tub, two vanities, a walk-in closet, and toilet. It also has a TV. The smaller bedroom has a bathroom and also a TV.

There is a larger TV in the great room. There is also good wireless service. All-in-all, this was a very comfortable house for nature lovers and we would come here again in a second!

Wonderful house!!!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. Beautiful views from the house. Light filled airy spaces. Loved the Mexican tile floors and windows everywhere. Quiet neighborhood. While here enjoyed kayaking to Atsena Otie Key and also a day on the Rainbow River.
