Rione Monti in Rome is now the mecca of all tourists traveling in the capital. It borders the Rome of the Roman Forum and the district Esquilino.
A few steps from the District there are the magnificent basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore with its characteristic cosmatesque floor and San Pietro in Vincoli which houses the famous Moses of Michelangelo.
Between two major thoroughfares, Via Cavour and Via Nazionale, it contains the slums, the old neighborhood "Sub Urbe" - under the city - whose basements emerge at the Coliseum. Its streets are made of cobblestones, and its narrow streets at night are a beauty breathtaking.
The whole neighborhood revolves around the Piazza Madonna dei Monti, with the characteristic Fountain of the catechumens designed by Giacomo Della Porta, which is the main gathering place is the inhabitants, whether tourists.
Stores-gourmet, slow food restaurants and wineries dot the streets and all have affordable prices.
A Monti still exists a network of small traders and craftsmen who give the impression that time has stopped ...
There are antique dealers, carpenters, gilders, chromers and blacksmiths. There is one of the most famous flea markets in Rome. And then there are other, painters and art galleries. Small but precious, as the gallery Fondaco.
Monti, is a neighborhood not to be missed for those visiting the Eternal City !!!
