About Betty and Mary

We (Betty and Mary, we are sisters) purchased the mansion in 1986 and have many wonderful and loving memories living there and raising Mary’s daughter Sarah in the home. Betty worked at State Nursery in floral design and Mary graduated from Carroll College. Circumstances led the two of us in different directions, Betty to Las Vegas where she continues her career in floral design and Mary to Idaho where she continues her career in social work. We leased the big house for several years to families and in 2007 decided to do her justice by turning her into a vacation rental and at that time she became Helena’s Little Mansion. We hired many skilled laborers and local craftsman to help us do everything which we were unable to in the time we had.

Betty and Mary purchased this house in 1986

Why Betty and Mary chose Helena

We had a brother and family members that lived in Helena, we fell in love with the area from the easy access to the many lakes, hiking trails, Gates of the Mountains, The Great Divide ski area, Reeder's Alley, Last Chance Gulch, the Cathedral and Marysville the local ghost town with a great restaurant called the Marysville House. We liked living in the State Capital and the small town feel where you know your neighbors and the clerks at the grocery store.

What makes this house unique

Helena's Little Mansion is a beautiful mansion and the woodwork is beyond comparison in the area. It is a wonderful experience to stay in such a unique vintage home. Each window provides a panoramic view of the valley, Mount Helena and the Sleeping Giant.

Great weekend! Perfect for our Commissioning Ceremony Celebration!

  • 5 of 5

We came to Helena for our son’s Commissioning Ceremony and we had 13 family members! This house was 👌🏼perfect. We worried about space, hot water for showers, heat in an old house in a Montana winter, and other minute details but it turned out to be a worry-free weekend. We had 10 adults and 3 kids and we had plenty of room. In addition, the gas fireplace didn’t work when we first got here but Betty took care of it remotely and immediately by contacting the fireplace company. They came right away to fix it and we enjoyed it for 2 days... highly recommend this house when you visit Helena!

Owner's Response: Thank you for this great review, we truly appreciate all the complements. We love the Little Mansion, as it was our home for years, she is very warm and welcoming. Thank you for letting us know about the fireplace, it was recently installed and just needed a few bugs worked out I guess, glad that you were able to use it. Your family will always be welcome to visit Helena's Little Mansion!

Pefect Helena Vacation Home

  • 5 of 5

My girlfriend and I stayed here last month, and will certainly be making it our annual retreat.

Every last detail has been thought of with this home. As a business traveler, I was a bit skeptical about internet access in Montana, but I have to admit, my fears were unfounded.

Owner, Mary Smith was very accommodating of our special requests, and a great source of local knowledge.

Each of the rooms are perfectly appointed. The home is very clean. The kitchen is great too. We had a barbecue one night out on the patio... Such a refreshing change from eating out every night.

Nearby to downtown, so we took the Montana mansion tour - even saw the governor's old mansion. Canyon Ferry lake the next day was stunning as well. The Gates of the Mountains are a must see!

I would recommend this property to everyone.

Perfect Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at Helena's Little Mansion. We shared the house with my husband's sister and family, and there was plenty of room for us - and the 11 kids! The house had everything we needed for cooking, and we loved the front and back porches for relaxing. Betty was more than helpful, and made the rental process so much easier. If we visit Helena again, we will definitely try to stay here! Thank you so much!!

Perfect for a girls' trip!

  • 5 of 5

This lovely home has lots of charm and character! We had quite a lightning show one night and a shopper of a storm the next night...all very safe from the roomy porch off of the kitchen. The view looking NE across the valley was lovely...we enjoyed meals morning, noon, and night out was perfect!

The neighborhood was very quiet, yet convenient to the main drag.

Our hosts were very helpful when we had any questions and jumped right on a problem with the BBQ. They were obviously very committed to our comfort throughout the whole reservation process and stay.

We highly recommend this felt like our own private B & B!

Felt Like Home

  • 5 of 5

This home was beautiful and a delight to stay at. After a few days, I forgot that it wasn't "my" home! It had all of the beauty of a classy B and B, but the whole house was ours! The kitchen had everything you could need for preparing any kind of meal, and the expansive dining room table in the formal dining room allowed for some really nice meals. However, we also opted to dine out on the back deck overlooking the "Sleeping Giant" and the mountain ranges beyond the Helena Valley, or to sit on the quaint, front porch peeking up through the trees at Mt. Helena. I used to live in Helena, and the last time I visited I stayed in a hotel. I'll never do that again! Staying at Helena's Little Mansion really colored my whole visit in a positive way. It was great to have such a pleasant place to come home to.

We try very hard to keep it nice for our guests, and give them everything they could possibly need. The views are great on the back patio of the Sleeping Giant, and yes the front is Mt. Helena. Thank you, Betty and Mary
