Sleeps 4 - Dogs Welcome - Most Westerly Point
Comfortable cottage in beautiful location.
A very comfortable cottage in a wonderful location in a remote area of Scotland with lovely views.
Handy cafe for a morning coffee and an interesting exhibition about the lighthouse. View from the top of the lighthouse amazing. Cottage spacious and well equipped.
Chilling out at Ardnamurchan Lighthouse.
This cottage was almost double the cost of a cottage on Mull the previous week, so our expectations were fairly high. The Lighthouse is quite remote, but a reasonably easy drive from Kilchoan, where we found a nice shop which supplied most basic essentials (although we were glad we had done a good shop at Tobermory before our ferry crossing to Ardnamurchan). The Lighthouse is a magnet for visitors and is open every day, so the tip of the peninsular was not empty during the day. The cottage was clean, and contained one good-sized bedroom (which unfortunately had supplied a king-sized quilt crammed into a queen-sized duvet cover, a problem which we resolved ourselves after only one uncomfortable night by foraging the property for more appropriate bedding), and another very small bedroom with bunk-beds which we did not use. The sitting room, kitchen and bathroom are all a good size and reasonably well-equipped. However, we have stayed in other lighthouse cottages, and this one is in serious need of refurbishment. We discovered some electrical issues which we reported and which were mostly addressed promptly by an excellent handyman who came first thing Monday morning. We found the Caretakers (who luckily live next-door) very helpful and friendly. We had chosen this location for its peaceful location, and to see the wildlife; we saw otters, mink, dolphins, deer and many types of bird during our holiday.
Comfortable stay in the middle of nowhere
Not the place for those seeking bright lights and a nearby McDonalds. The attraction here is peace and quiet, wonderful scenery and interesting places to explore. In lieu of bright lights, you do get wonderful sunsets. The cottage is clean, well-equipped and very weather-proof (I was there during Storm Hector last year!). There is a village store at Kilchoan but the nearest supermarket is in Tobermory, a very enjoyable ferry ride away on the Isle of Mull, so it pays to arrive with most of your provisions. Like anywhere in western Scotland the weather is key and can vary at the drop of a hat. No problems with midges as they like to stay inland. There's often something interesting happening on or in the water, be it strange, specialist boats whose function you can only guess at or dolphins, porpoises, etc. swimming past the rocks. Because of the single track roads, travel anywhere takes longer than one expects.
The cottage was warm and spacious and for sea watching an ideal location.
That said, it needs a little attention in respect of the dampness and plumbing.
For some strange reason the kitchen sink had odd taps, one of which ( the cold) was so small, it was virtually impossible to place a pan or kettle under it.
My main concern is booking and paying for a cottage that sleeps four and being asked to "hire" linen for two of the guests.
This has been our second visit to Keeper's Cottage, the location just underneath the lighthouse is absolutely wonderful.
A magical place to stay! We had a great week exploring and resting. That's all I want to say. Why do you need 100 characters in a review?
