lovely serene stay
we enjoyed our time in Omaio and the house had the best view to wake up to.
The owners of this property are wonderful, and more than happy to follow up any questions you might have. We stayed here with our 2 year old son and 11 year old daughter. While the property is next to the main road, you hardly notice it's there with the sea views right out in front. Comfortable property with all the amenities you might need at hand. A lovely annex (self contained sleep out) - which our children would have been more than happy to stay in instead of the main house, it was very cute!!! Great beaches for swimming, rock fishing and adventuring on - friendly local people, and an overall great place to go for some time out and R&R. We woke to no power on our first morning there, power was out across the entire bay so definitely could not be helped - thankfully a well equipped BBQ and full gas bottle was on hand to cook our breakfast on, and boil water for our morning coffee overlooking the sea! Would highly recommend this property. Thank you for a lovely stay, and a chance to de-stress from our usually hectic way of life.
Beautiful house and stunning view
Beautiful house and stunning view. Quite noisy with the trucks if you’re not used to it. Path to the beach is quite steep and awkward when carrying fishing gear. But would absolutely recommend to anyone with a boat as there are ample spots up & down the coast to launch from. Good fishing to be had.
Omaio Bay is renowned for its beauty, and fishing and has year-round fishing from boat, kayak or beach. There is safe swimming and rock pools to explore (at low tide) at the picturesque Omaio Bay domain in front of Omaio Marae, or if you prefer you can swim at the Haparapara River 5 minutes up the road. There are many choices of safe beaches to swim nearby if the Bay out front seems rough.
In nearby Te Kaha – only 8 minutes away, you can launch your boat next to Te Kaha resort. The resort offers a bar, restaurant, but there’s also a café at the nearby Te Kaha grocery store. Three minutes up the road is the lovely Maraetai Bay, aka Schoolhouse Bay, safe for swimming, picnicking and with great boat launching.

For the serious fisherman, a drive along the coast from Omaio, will take you Waihau Bay, location of world-renowned fishing competitions for deep sea fishing like Marlin, Yellow tailed Kingfish and Tuna. There you’ll also find the Waihau Bay Lodge restaurant, bar (food is recommended, especially the fish!) and a fuel stop.
Omaio Bay has a great store (called Highway 35) for coffee, takeaways and grocery supplies located at the beginning of the bay. Take a photo of the ageing but beautifully-sited Omaio Soldiers Memorial Church (St Patricks).
Other activities nearby include horse-riding, jet boat tours of the Motu River, mountain-biking through the amazing Motu Trails, or take a picnic excursion to the East Cape Lighthouse. Go for lunch at the Macadamia Nut Orchard garden cafe overlooking lovely Whanarua Bay, where you can take the scenic walk through beautiful bush to the Whanarua Bay waterfall.
Driving to Omaio Bay from Opotiki; it’s a 45 minute scenic coastal drive along Pacific Coast Highway 35 which opens out to spectacular views across Bay of Plenty, showcasing Whale Island and White Island on the horizon, as well as the Motu River and other sweeping bays along the way.
There are many beautiful Marae and churches along East Cape which add to the cultural, historical importance of this region. Te Kaha, Omaio are Te Whānau-ā-Apanui tribal ancestral lands and respect of all cultural sites and instructions is expected.
