What makes this cabin unique

Runaway Wagon is located in the Shagbark Community. Shagbark is a private gated community just a short scenic drive from Pigeon Forge, Wears Valley, Townsend, and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The community has about 1300 acres with creeks, meadows, woodlands, foothill ridges and spectacular mountain views. The minute you enter, the mountains wrap around and above you to surround you in Appalachian ambiance, and from here you can easily get to Gatlinburg, TN, Cades Cove, Dollywood, the Townsend Wye, the Titanic Museum, the Pigeon Forge Malls, the Ripley's Aquarium and more in under an hour of travel.

Fantastic Bachelor Party

  • 5 of 5

We had a great weekend and couldn't of asked for a better cabin. The cabin had a gorgeous view and was plenty of room for 10 guys. Also there was plenty of privacy with only other cabin fairly close. Would definitely recommend it for any type of family vacation or bachelor(ette) type getaway.

Return to a fantastic cabin!!

  • 5 of 5

We have been to this cabin before. Just enjoy the serene area around the cabin, enjoying the wildlife. Saw who they call "Ricky Racoon" a few times, he seems to walk along each cabin balcony and is so cute. Cades Cove had a few baby bear cubs on show towards dusk, hiding in the trees while mom ate down below. Cabin is so inviting and great to relax in. Pool playing was high on the agenda again. A great base that is near to everything, yet off the beaten path!!

Fantastic 1st visit to cabin, booking again.

  • 5 of 5

Just talking with our friends that we stayed with at My Runaway Wagon Retreat in september 2012, and looking to book the cabin with them in 2013. Thought it would be nice to give a review, (our friends will too). The cabin was nice and bright and welcoming, and it was a relief to arrive after a long journey from Spain to Florida, and then Florida to Tennessee the following day. Sunrise showed us how serene the area was, and we sat on the rear side of the cabin on well made log furniture, and studied the mountain view. I took some paints and a small canvas, and painted the view. We did visit the pool area in Shagbark, and even though it was inviting, I do not swim, but others were having a great time. Went on a few mountain hikes around the Wears Valley area, and white water rafting nearby. Good area for energetic people, hikers, or for just gentle strolling along a riverbank. I normally ignore the tourist areas, however did enjoy the shops in Gatlinburg and the craft shops of the Glades Road area just outside of Gatlinburg. Drove around parts of Shagbark, up the mountains, and so glad that our cabin was not too high, as some roads are tricky, but the cabin was easily accessible, and I believe parts will be paved too during 2013. I highly recommend this cabin for all its beauty, and the location, and I am sure you will agree with my review once you visit this cabin too. J and K King.

More than what we dreamed of!!

  • 5 of 5

I am booking the cabin for 2013, and realized I forgot to make my review known for my visit in September 2012. We ascended a short distance up the mountainside and arrived at our beautiful cabin, with a lovely red wagon outside. The cabin was very spacious and clean, and our friends and I had a choice of three huge log beds, that were sooooo soft and comfortable. I had the top room, and at night could see the distant cabin lights that seemed to twinkle like stars, it was amazing. The daytime I awoke to a beautiful mountain view at the rear of the cabin, and that morning and every morning I would sit and listen to the birds and the peace and quiet too with my cup of coffee in hand. It is a short distance to Pigeon Forge, and the man on the security gate offered me a map that showed the back roads to cut out a lot of the Pigeon Forge traffic when going to and from the Parkway. Pigeon Forge is for the adamant tourist, while Gatlinburg has the town center and Glades Road area for lovely shops and lots of crafts. Cades Cove is great in the daytime for walks, picnics and mountain views; a couple of hours before dusk we drove around slowly to find lots of deer and black bears, (if you see cars stopping, it usually means they are spotting a black bear up close). Never been to Townsend before, and found some lovely places to eat and shop, (mainly by turning right at the end of the Wears Valley Road). Wears Valley is picturesque, with lots of quaint places to visit too. All in all, the cabin and surrounding areas were all just perfect. The cabin is a nice retreat from any hussle and bussle of busy life, yet so close to everything, and kept us entertained with the movie area, bar, pool table, and games the owners had left there for us to enjoy. I would recommend this to everyone, and we are in turn going to book this cabin again in 2013.

LOVE THIS CABIN!

  • 5 of 5

Our family stayed here last week. We love this cabin! It is very nice. The kitchen is stocked with everything you need to cook. The beds are very comfortable. The view is great. It snowed while we were there and we sat in the hot tub while it was snowing. Absolutely gorgeous! We have a very relaxing trip!

Enjoyed with concerns

  • 4 of 5

Our initial impression of the cabin was very positive, however there were a few areas of concern.

We noticed immediately that the beds did not have mattress pads and then discovered that the bed on the main level had a very offensive odor. We discovered that body fluids had permeated the mattress. The rental agency responded very quickly by getting all mattresses steam cleaned and added mattress pads. Unfortunately steam cleaning did not totally eliminate the odor so plastic was used on that one since replacement was not an immediate option.

The gravel road to the cabin needed grading to eliminate wash boards especially on the tight corners.

The entrance to the cabin was a little difficult and somewhat of a trip hazard for older people that are not sure footed. The entry steps are tilted away from the building due to settling and the steps are not uniform in height. The step into the cabin is in excess of 9 inches and definitely not handicap friendly.

The view was very nice from the balconies. There are more than adequate TVs for a larger family with teenagers and 3.5 bathrooms added to the convenience factor.
