'Our Big Island vacation was perfect! We want to thank you for your attention to detail prior to our arrival. Upon arrival, the property exceeded our high expectations. The home was perfect! Everything was very clean, the kitchen was well-equipped for cooking, and the bedrooms comfortably accommodated two couples. The location in North Kohala, with views of rolling pastures and sunsets over the ocean, was a perfect jumping off point for exploring the Big Island. It was also a short drive to our favorite beach. We look forward to our return and will recommend this vacation rental to everyone we know!'
'We had a wonderful stay at your house. Now we go back to your website to relive our vacation! It was perfect!'
'We had a great stay at your house--what a beautiful and well appointed home.'
'Your home is perfect. It connects with the outdoors so well. The sun setting in the front yard and the green of the hills and trees, everything.'
Hale Pueo Kea (House of the White Owl) is located just outside of Hawi, in the Big Island’s beautiful North Kohala District. Away from the crowds, but convenient to so many activities, it also offers refuge from the heat and humidity found at sea level.
The house is on 10 quiet wooded acres, with an orchard offering bananas, limes, oranges, grapefruit, papayas, and macadamia nuts. There are two bedrooms, one bath, a fully equipped kitchen, living room with fireplace, dining room, laundry, and a large lanai. Nearby towns of Kapa’au and Hawi have fine restaurants, art galleries, and shopping. The larger town of Waimea is 19 miles up the mountain, and is the home of the famous Parker Ranch.
The best beaches on the island are a 30 minute drive from the house. As you drive the undeveloped, rocky shoreline, watch for whales from November through April. The Big Island has fabulous hiking, horseback riding, archeological sites, and of course, Volcanoes National Park. The only problem is finding the time to fit it all in.
'We enjoyed relaxing, walking, the view, seeing Maui in the distance, the horses up close, the avocados, grapefruit, balmy breezes..'
'Thanks for sharing your delightful home with us in Hawaii. We truly relaxed..'

My Husband and I own and operate a Ranch a short distance from Hale Pueo Kea. We chose Kohala, where cows and horses are in heaven before they die. We raise animals on only grass and rain for a exclusive buyers club and we work to steward our land to serve our community.
Jileen Russell purchased this house in 2011
We purchased this home in 2011. We have always admired the smart design and sustaining features and the native plants in the garden. We are excited to share it with visitors and add our special highlights to your visit. We can offer recommendations for massage, yoga, Feldenkrais, Chinese medicine and local CSA farms that can provide you with fresh produce during your stay.
Morning coffee on the lanai with the birds.
Fresh fruit from the orchard including apple bananas, so delicious. Sandy beaches are 30 minutes away, yet there are amazing swim and snorkel spots much closer. Our evenings are cooler and we have fewer bugs as a result. The Kohala Mountain Road is one of the most beautiful scenic drives in this world. The Farmers Markets are delightful. Our small town is safe and welcoming and tourists have been known to go home to sell their homes and then move here.

The House of the White-Owl is a wonderful 2 bedroom home. The location is up in the hills, a quick 5 minute drive to Hawi/Kappau, but receives some of the inclement weather of the volcano. Often, we would leave sunshine on the beach and return to stormy weather. But the best beaches north of Kona (Kohala coast) are only 45 mins away and the town of Hawi has an excellent sushi/local beef restaurant, as well as other restaurants, a good coffee shop, and food truck. Despite being on the road from Hawi to Waimea, its extremely quiet and tranquil and our host, Jileen, was very respectful of our privacy. The kitchen is well-stocked with everything you could need to make a great dinner or bake. There are citrus trees to avail yourself of! The beds are very comfortable and the place was very clean. The location is also a good jumping off point to the Waipio Valley and even Hilo and the coast north of Hilo (eg. Akaka Falls). We had a wonderful stay.
We absolutely loved staying at Jileen's place. It's so peaceful and quiet. The location was perfect for exploring both sides of the island and Waimea. It was a bit of a drive to Hilo of course, but an easy drive to all of the west side beaches. We loved the little funky town of Hawi too. Check out the farmers market on Saturday.
We also really liked that the bedroom/bathroom area was separate from the living/kitchen area as we were two couples and sometimes one or two of us felt like being quiet and reading while the others felt like listening to music and talking.
Even the red bird with the thick orange beak that liked to fly into the windows at 6 in the morning was charming.
Don't hesitate to stay here. It's perfect.
Nice clean place. House was stocked with most of the condiments and spices you need which is nice. Haw'i is fun and the area feels like Hana (more rain forest and less lava desert)but much more accessible! Real Hawaii not sirens and traffic.
Property was exactly as advertised. Clean and nice amenities that made it special.
I shared the House of the White Owl with my 17 year old daughter, my husband and our best friend for a week and we all agreed there was no place we would rather have been. The house is cozy and comfy and has everything you need. The fresh fruit (papaya, mangoes, bananas) that awaited our arrival was fantastic! The mangoes were the best any of us had ever had. AND we learned that there are like 60 kinds of mangoes.... who knew?? The energy of the house and land is something special- at the House of the White Owl I felt both closer to the Earth, and closer to the sky..... The clicking geckos amused us all and we encountered no biting creatures of any type ;-) The closest town, Hawi, is great for its little coffee shop and Sushi Rock is top notch. The house is surrounded by rolling green hills, a 30 min drive from some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, and less than 2 hours drive from a rocky hike up the lunar landscape of Mauna Kea for those souls who prefer to toil on their vacations ;-) I am basically counting the days til I can return ;-)
