About this property

Beautiful Estate Nestled in the Blueridge Near Bluemont Wine Country

Visit and stay at this beautiful 1896 French country estate nestled in Blueridge Mountains wine country just 50 miles west of Washington D.C.. Wrought iron front entrance gates, walking paths through meadows and forest to a natural pond, 50 acres of prairie and old hardwoods atop Blueridge Mountain Road, a large stone fire pit, Adirondacks chairs and patio daybeds looking toward the Shenandoah valley, flower and vegetable gardens and raised beds, large outdoor patio spaces and a 100 year old stone Manor House make this the perfect location for family events, wedding parties, retreats or other small gatherings. Not a venue for weddings, this is rather the location for smaller gatherings such as the wedding party/family residence, or the family rehearsal dinner / post-wedding brunch. Perfect for author, artist or small retreats, weekend hunting or fishing excursions, or a special family get-away. An eclectic antique furniture, art and book collection, an easel in the sunroom, a vinyl record collection, tastefully decorated work spaces, and lots of privacy make this a wonderful retreat. Sleeping 8-10, the property also includes an Old Schoolhouse sleeping another 2 people and a Country French Cottage sleeping 4. The entire property is bookable by contacting the Owner/Manager to discuss schedule. Early planning recommended as this venue fills quickly. This is NOT a venue for college parties or other wild events. Owner manages the property closely.

Lovely home in the mountains of Virginia
We enjoyed our stay at Teri’s lovely home and was happy she had even decorated for Christmas. The property was very quiet and the home was clean and even offered toiletries in the bath rooms. The only small inconvenience was the wifi was poor reception with our I-pads and phones but that can be expected in a mountainous region.

Amazing!!!
This was an early Christmas gathering with our kids and grandchildren. We felt as if we were in our own home. Not a detail was missed so comfortable. The owner even set up a Christmas tree with decor as well as outside lights. To top it off we left this morning on our travel back to Rosemary Beach Florida with 4 inches of snow wish we had one more day to build a snowman!!! My friends and I had the most wonderful time at this beautiful estate. Everything about the home was perfect. We couldn’t have found a better place for our Friends getaway. I highly recommend this place for anyone who wants a private getaway in a beautiful setting. The home has everything you would need for a perfect stay. We had a chance to meet the owners and they couldn’t have been nicer. We will definitely be coming back to this amazing home!!

This family owned and operated property has been in the hands of only a few families over the generations — since its construction in 1896 as a retreat for elite Washingtonians to escape the summer heat of the city. Before cars, Washington families took the train to the Snickersville stop in the foothills of the Blueridge Mountains, in the Village of Bluemont, transporting children, nannies and summer belongings up the mountain road to the cooler High Meadows. It is described as “The Land of the Lotus Eaters” from Ulysses’ Odyssey; a truly peaceful and magical land in which to loose oneself.

Why they chose this property

High Meadows is evidenced by its date stone on the southwest corner, High Meadows was constructed in 1896. It was built for Elizabeth Somers, of the Georgetown area of Washington— principal of the Mount Vernon Seminary, a Georgetown girls’ school.

Several later residents appear to have had associations with Mount Vernon Seminary.
Hugh Rowland, a prominent Georgetown attorney, acquired the property in 1920 and spent time there with his two daughters.

The massive stone house that stands on 12 acres is a testament to the skilled local stone masons, as well as the availability of high quality granite for construction. An illustration in a contemporary 10-page pamphlet published by the Passenger Department of the Southern Railway (soon to be the Washington & Old Dominion), shows “the mountain residence of Mrs. Elizabeth Somers.”

A one-story, hip-roofed, stone and frame building—referred to as “the schoolhouse”—suggests that Sommers, with her skills as a school principal, planned to use or did use the building as a local school. Gilbert Fowler, who died several years ago at the age of 92, and who came to the Mountain circa 1916, recalled attending a small stone school on Route 605.

The property contains a stone machine shed and barn. The open yard is well landscaped with mature specimen trees and is surrounded by dry-laid stone fences with square stone gateposts marking the entrances.

High Meadows lies directly adjacent to Eagle Rock Farm, another home on the tour.

What makes this property unique

High Meadows is a 1896 large stone historic home (see above link) situated on 50 acres of meadowland atop the Blueridge Mountains. It is walking distance to the Appalachian Trail and a short walk or drive to Bluemont wine and craft breweries and the historic villages of Harpers Ferry, Middleburg and Upperville. High Meadows is 50 short miles west of Washington D.C.. It is perfect for wedding parties, rehearsal dinners and Sunday brunches. A retreat for artists, authors or corporate executives wishing to combine business and the outdoors (hunting, fishing, hiking, kayaking, biking and other). The Owner will work with guests to arrange local activities on a bespoke basis. Beautifully appointed rooms, artwork, an easel and canvasses, extensive outdoor patio and meadow space, an extensive book collection and a vinyl record player and record collection all add to the mystique of this very private high mountain retreat. Two additional structures on the property add to capacity and can be booked separately; one an Old Stone Schoolhouse that has been converted into a small living space and one A Country French (Caretakers) Cottage. Photos can be sent separately.
