Constructed in 2008, “Tucker’d Out” is situated on the eastern flank of the Blue Ridge Mountains near the base of Old Rag Mountain in Madison County, Virginia (right at the Madison/Rappahannock County line). The Shenandoah National Park is within view from the front porch of the cottage, and its many hiking trails and trout streams are easily accessible.

The opportunities for relaxation are abundant in this beautiful and historic part of Virginia. Whether you’re into hiking, fly-fishing, biking, dining out, antiquing, sipping wine at a nearby vineyard, including Sharp Rock and DuCard or simply reading a good book in a rocking chair, there’s something here for every taste.

Virginia’s most famous hike, the Saddle Trail on Old Rag, can be your morning activity, followed by dinner that evening at one of the many fine restaurants in the area - including, Thornton River Grill or Rudy's Pizza in Sperryville or the nearby Inn at Little Washington - one of the world’s finest restaurants. Or, if you want to take it a little easier, enjoy the 26 private acres that surround Tucker’d Out – complete with trails, meadows and woodlands, and have a cook-out on the property. Stocked trout streams are minutes away for fly-fishing enthusiasts. Cool swimming holes on hot summer days are another local treat. The list of opportunities for recreation and relaxation goes on and on. The owners will happily answer any questions you may have about things to do in the area.

An outdoor shower with hot and cold water has been added at Tucker'd Out. This has been a big hit with our guests!

The tranquility of these ancient mountains, with their waterfalls, overlooks and wildlife, will quickly bring you a sense of peace that will make you glad you came. Come visit Tucker’d Out soon, and let nature take its course!

Tucker'd Out is a beautiful place right at the base of Old Rag. We had a great time!

Highly recommend this beautiful place for a weekend getaway or even a week long vacation exploring the Shenandoah mountains. We walked to a beautiful winery down the street and enjoyed cooking in both nights we stayed and loved the incredible view from the front porch.

Charming Cottage

  • 5 of 5

What a lovely girls weekend! Tucker'd Out is absolutely charming, and the view is amazing.

The cottage is cozy and welcoming. The grounds are lovely.

Short drive to Sperryville, where we enjoyed nice lunches at Thornton River Grille and Headmaster's Brew Pub.

White Oak Canyon Trail is also a short drive away and an easy hike to the waterfall.

We had a terrific time!

Great escape in beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

My fiancé and I recently stayed at Tucker'd Out with another couple. The property and surrounding area is beautiful and the house is very comfortable for four people and could easily accommodate more if they don't mind sleeping in shared space. Peggy and Carter were very helpful and answered any questions we had. It was an easy drive to Sperryville which is a great little town with a bunch of coffee shops and restaurants. I would highly recommend exploring one of the many hiking trails near by. We went to White Oak Canyon Trail one day and were able to check out the beautiful falls. We went in February and can't wait to check out the area in the spring/summer/fall! I would highly recommend staying at Tucker'd Out.

Beautiful and very comfortable cottage close to Old Rag

  • 5 of 5

5 of us just returned from our annual ladies' weekend hike to Old Rag and a wonderful time at Tucker's Out. We usually stay in a B&B, but it was much better to stay together in one house. And we all agreed that the cottage was in excellent shape, beautifully furnished, with great perks (and trust me when I say that there were perfectionists among our group!). I slept in the window bed upstairs and at night I could look out at the mountain and brilliant stars, almost like camping out but immensely more comfortable! Despite our numbers, the one bath was not an issue. The house is a few minutes' drive from the Old Rag parking lot so we were able to get an early start (and despite the great weather, at that hour it was not crowded). We had a lovely dinner at Thornton Creek grill. And in the morning we took a long walk around the wonderful cottage grounds; loved finding the chairs placed in quiet spots in the woods and the views of the neighboring farms and mountains. Having left our families behind for the weekend, there were some anxieties over the spotty cell coverage but in the end it was a healthy (and too short!) break from the norm of being far too connected! The owner interaction was a breeze. Our group plans to return next year... and I may come back with my family in the meantime.

Perfect cottage for family hiking trip - Old Rag Mountain

  • 5 of 5

Our family rented the Tucker'd Out cottage for two nights and found it to be cozy and comfortable with all the amenities we could ask for! The property itself is fabulous - with breathtaking views of Old Rag Mountain and lots of land to explore. We particularly liked the location - very close to the parking lot for Old Rag and not far from White Oak Canyon.

The kitchen - which does not have a full oven - was perfect for our needs. We prepared all our meals each day and were surprised to find everything we needed and a few extras we didn't expect - like napkins, salt and pepper, olive oil, zip lock bags and aluminum foil. We certainly appreciated the well-stocked kitchen!

We used the charcoal grill one night, which was wonderful. And we enjoyed sitting on the front porch in the rocking chairs.

The upstairs living area and bedroom were perfect for the kids! The couches up there are comfy and there is plenty of room for them to sleep. You could comfortably sleep six or more in the house - but with only one bathroom and one dining area, I would not advise more than six.

We were surprised when we read the guest book and learned the property has been rented out for several years - You would think it's brand new with the way it is maintained. Everything was in great condition - nothing in need of repair or even looking worn. The linens were fresh and clean, the furniture was in great shape and the whole cottage looked well taken care of.

The owners were great to work with - giving me directions and answering questions in advance. Thanks to Peggy's direction, we stopped at Food Lion on Rt 29 on the way to the cottage from Charlottesville for groceries.

We have two teenagers and a tween - so a few days without internet or satellite was just what we needed to connect as a family without distractions. We played games and poker (we brought our own but they actually had poker chips and cards) and watched a DVD (there are tons of them at the house!). We wanted to use the corn hole boards and ladder toss but we didn't have time. We would have liked having internet to check the weather and use Google Maps but we managed just fine without that luxury.

Thank you for a wonderful spring break. We would love to come back again!
