HEADWATERS OF THE WEST BRANCH OF THE PENOBSCOT RIVER - EXCELLENT SALMON AND TROUT FISHING!
In the heart of the North Maine Woods, off the beaten path, but easily accessible from the 'Golden Road', is "Tree Tops". The carriage house is situated on a lake with an amazing view of Mount Katahdin. Crystal clear Caribou Lake is steps away from the spiral staircase that leads to this spacious property that sleeps 6 adults and 4 children comfortably in cozy, well-appointed bedrooms. There are Inviting common areas for dining, socializing, gaming, reading or just lounging on the deck surrounded by the Maine flora and fauna. There is a brand new scandanavian style sauna and wood-fired hot tub for your use that are a wonderful way to relax at the end of an adventure filled day in the Maine Woods! Imagine watching the snow fall over the lake with a cocktail in hand while soaking in the hot tub or rolling in the snow after a good sweat in the sauna...'sigh'.
Tree Tops is woodsy, yet modern, with knotty pine decor, lots of windows, a fully equipped kitchen and all the (necessary) conveniences, including a large modern bathroom- no outhouse here! It has a peaceful balcony facing the lake with lounge chairs, BBQ grill and a small eating area. Though there is no phone, cable television or internet access (but, that's the point isn't it?) there is a solar powered electrical supply with generator back up to support smaller electrical appliances. In addition, you will have use of the common areas shared with the owner's home - a boat launch, the beach, fire place and picnic area.
It is perfect for families, a group of families or friends, hunting or snowmobiling parties. There is something for everyone to enjoy- no matter your age or skill level. You and your group will have a memorable experience in this beautiful place that offers the best of the Maine Wilderness Experience.
In the winter, drive your snowmobile right from the front yard on miles and miles of pristine frozen lake, or watch your kids snowmobile right out in front of the cabin. We are located within minutes of Maine's ITS 84 groomed snowmobile trails which give you access to virtually the entire state! Caribou Lake offers some of the best ice fishing around and downhill skiing is available in Greenville 40 miles away.

Spring and Summer- fish for land locked salmon right out of Caribou Lake or hit the streams and ponds around the area for some of the best trout you'll ever eat. Swim, canoe, kayak, power boat, jet ski- bring all your toys!

I have always owned property in this area
We had a unique stay. The week before our stay at the house, Peter outfitted my 3 kids and I with canoes and basic supplies. We spent most of the week paddling and eating fresh fish over the fire. Peter checked-in on us occaisionally and even brought me some gin and tonic on ice! We paddled into Peter's lake house where we spent a week with my brothers, their families, and my mother. We loved the wood-fired hot tub and grill. Peter somehow keeps everything stocked and operating smoothly, and we greatly enjoyed the interest Peter took in showing us how to use all of the amenities including all of the boats. Peter took the time to train my 15 year old how to operate the 14 foot outboard, which my son used to take four of the kids to a nearby island to camp.
Be aware that there is no internet access or phone line in the house. We did however get Verizon voice and data service on top of a hill 10 min away. The generator that supplements the solar panels can be a bit loud sometimes, but that's a small price to pay for having tremendous amenities in such a remote location. The store is a long way off, so provision thoughtfully at the start of your stay. Peter did pick-up a few items for us on a trip into town.
In summary, if you've got a streak of adventure, enjoy doing things the old fashioned way and enjoy good 'ol Maine hospitality from a really capable and generous guy, then this is the place for you.
We rented this property for a week in August 2013 and loved it. We had a group of 9, including 4 young kids and there was much more than enough room for everyone. Lots of indoor and outdoor space to play and explore for all ages. Inside is clean, well-maintained and as a quote from one in our party "the pictures don't do it justice"- just a beautiful, comfortable and welcoming vacation home. Outside there was a very large gravel beach, numerous canoes, kayaks and other boats, lots of swings, seating and some great options for cooking outdoors, which was a lot of fun. Great views of Katahdin right across the lake. And there's a wood fired hot tub which saw plenty of use- and a wood fired sauna- really an outdoor playground where we all had no problem spending lots of time just outside next to the lake, cooking over the fire, chasing the kids around, fishing, canoeing, horseshoes, laughing etc. Lots to keep you busy.
The location is a bit remote and a bit of a ride to a store, but really, that's exactly the setting we were looking for- a great place to spend good quality time and have fun. Special thanks to Peter, the owner, for being a great, responsive host and sharing this great spot and his local knowledge with us- I'd highly recommend this property for families and groups of friends!
Had the great pleasure of staying at this terrific property mid June 2013 with 9 of my friends for our annual "Manly weekend". Considering how remote this house is, the amenities were great. The setting is unbelievable with a clear view of Mt Katahdin across the lake. The owners were very helpful with their knowledge of the area, especially the fishing, which is superb. We've been going on this trip for 20 years and this was certainly the best fishing to date!! Huge firepit, canoes, kayaks, rowboat, brick charcoal cooking pit and enough room for all of us middle aged(i.e large!) guys. I would highly recommend this place for family and friends and surely plan on going back!! Sure its a hike but once there, the real world melts away!!
Our extended family (including our Scottish Terrier) spent the first week of August 2011 at this remarkable place. Although not exactly easy to get to, our efforts were rewarded. The setting is spectacular, the amenities were extraordinary considering the remoteness of the location, and our hosts managed to balance their availability with a willingness to let us be to ourselves. There was plenty of room for all of us (10 altogether) and we could be as active or laid back as the mood suited us. The absence of cell phone coverage and internet access was welcomed by the adults and tolerated surprisingly well by our children. Highly recommended!
I had the honor and privilege to vacation at this lake house in the middle of June with my dear friends. To my delight this was the best vacation in Maine I have ever experienced. The owners were wonderful and hospitality flourished to the highest traditions of exceptional courtesy. I would highly recommend this piece of heaven and consider it a hidden gem with a true taste of Maine. You will not get the same experience staying at a cabin, hotel, B&B or camp ground. If you want the best, its the best place to stay in the area!
As far as fishing, you have the best salmon and brook trout fishing in your back yard plus rivers, other lakes and ponds nearby. This is absolutely a place to bring your wife, kids and family and simply relax. Baxter State Park is very close too.
The owners family also owns a float plane company so the only regret I have is that I never took a float plane trip from the house or took enough photos. We were so occupied fishing, sightseeing and having a blast that it never crossed my mind.
I highly recommend this vacation destination for city folks, Mainers , family members and fisherman! We felt like family and were treated like family (serious). My wife and I cant wait until we vacation on Caribou again!

This is a great rental location. The owners are very helpful with everything and even helped provide some wild venison for us to rotisserie.
The place really has everything you could want in the Maine woods... wood fired sauna, hot tub, canoes, kayaks, and a gorgeous lake right outside the back door.
We went up here for a bachelor's weekend with about 8 guys and everyone loved it. There was more than enough space for all of us to sleep.
Very highly recommended, we may even go back for my bachelor party!
