About Karen

I'm Karen & worked as a LA teacher before coming on board as an educational diagnostician (assessing children for special needs). I resigned my LA position June 2012, and as of August 2012, I am now teaching a special needs class in nearby MS. My husband, Donald, is a retired security officer from a LA state inmate facility. He and I have owned rental property for the past 25 years and we renovate our own properties. We renovated a house in MS a couple blocks from the Gulf which Katrina claimed in 2005. We looked on the bright side and bought a house in Pigeon Forge 2006: Bear Creek Lodge. We are building back on our lot in Bay St. Louis, MS, so remember us if you are planning a trip to the mountains or to the beach. We are blessed to live on LA/MS line where we can go back & forth for important things: LA: grandchildren and church; MS: beach and school children. The most important things in our lives are God, our children, grandchildren, family and friends.

Karen purchased this cottage in 2007

Why Karen chose East

I feel the presence of God daily, but when I take a scenic ride through Smokey Mt. National Park or Cades Cove, I think of how great my God must be that He spoke this existence into place. I've vacationed here for many years and owning a piece of property here was a far-away dream, but God made it a reality in 2006 when we purchased Bear Creek Lodge in Pigeon Forge. God blessed us with guests like you to rent it; however, being an educator, it was always rented during summer and holidays when I could visit. A year later, in 2007, while looking for a piece of property to park our camper, we stumbled upon this awesome place in Wears Valley. After renovations, we not only had a piece of the mountain to park our camper on, but two more additional nightly rentals. He gave us more than one piece of the mountain. We invite you, our family and friends, to visit and enjoy a piece of the treasure with us.

Perfect Location

  • 5 of 5

We loved the location of this cottage. It was perfect for our motorcycle riding in the park. It also is very close the other way to Pigeon Forge and all the action. The cottage itself is cute. It has everything you need. There is a small fridge and a 2 burner hot plate, charcoal grill, etc. if you choose to stay in and cook. The bed is comfortable. If I had to suggest something, it would be to either find a lower headboard or higher mattress since we lost our pillows a lot behind the bed. There were quite a lot of cobwebs but that's to be expected if not rented back to back. Other than that the cottage was very clean. We are hoping to book again for our yearly "Mommy-Daddy" motorcycle trip.

Great Stay

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time staying in Lil Apple Bear Cottage. It was roomy enough to accommodate my family using the pull out sofa bed for our girls. The location and the views are wonderful. Karen is super friendly and very helpful. The cottage was clean and stocked with everything we needed. We look forward to returning!

Love the Little Cottage in Cades Cove! Cozy, and a great get-a-way - away from the busy part of life. Very quiet and a great place to just relax! Will be staying here again. Karen is always great to work with. Those who have not stayed here, should try it if you want to have peace and quiet!

Location! Location! Location!

Loved it! Smack in the middle of Townsend/Cades Cove and Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg. Far enough from the crowds, but close to everything! Nice view, better than expected! Has carport, 2 burner "stove" every cooking and eating utensil possible, nice washer and dryer in the shed. Also, a pleasant surprise, a freezer in the shed for bags of ice to pack coolers for day trips! Huge jetted tub, kids loved it....but Honeymooners would really enjoy. Easy to find, easy to get to. All paved roads. Nice porch to watch the local bunny rabbits on the lawn. Charcoal grill on back porch! Everything perfectly maintained. Rate is a bargain for the comforts of home.

Owner's Response: Thanks Bill, and I'm with you. I have a 6 BR only 2.9 miles from Pigeon Forge Parkway but when I'm in town, guess where I stay? In the valley! It is a beautiful view of God's creation. In my opinion, all of the seasons make an awesome appearance in the valley. FYI Bill, the top of the mountain which you view from the back porch is the border line of the Great Smokey Mountain National Park. Thanks Bill for your input. It made me smile:) I'm glad you and the family enjoyed your stay. Please keep us in mind for your next visit and if you bring a bigger group, please check out our 2 BR next door which sleeps 8. Thanks! Karen

The area is nice.

Our stay was enjoyable. The cabin had everything we needed, except a stove. The only things I would improve on would be cleaning up the outdoor seating and porches before guests arrive, replacing the toilet seat, and cleaning or painting the walls in the bathroom and jacuzzi tub area. Also possibly replacing the water heater woth a bigger one; there's not enough hot water to take a full jacuzzi bath.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review b/c it is through input from our guest we are able to improve and also clarify. I do try to be an honest hostess to inquiring guests and once again will state, this cottage is out in the open valley with a large back yard. It has one of the best views anywhere, but with this scenic, mountain view also comes large maple trees and a large apple tree right at the back porch. And I might add, with the large trees comes many leaves. We do clean the outside prior to guests arriving, but it takes only a few strong puffs of wind to blow the leaves right up near the porch and many times onto the porch. We do leave a broom inside for guests who prefer to keep the leaves swept away. Hey, folks, it's good 'ole mountain living so for those seeking the bright lights, other than the porch lights, this may not be the location. This location is not in town and outside furniture gets dusty and lucky folks will even find a lady bug or two dressed all in red polka-dots! Toilet seat replacement: not a problem and I will certainly add it to my list of chores. For clarity, please know the toilet seat is oak and has no splinters, splits, sits evenly, etc., but truthfully, it is approximately 1/8" edging lacking full coverage when seat is down and I can see where that may would be annoying. Hot water heater: this is the first review I've ever received regarding lack of hot water, but we will definitely check that. For 2-4 people, I would actually think the hot water heater is big enough so maybe a check on the elements will do. The lack of a stove: The 1 BR cottage is accommodating only for 2-4 guests and as a general rule, small groups don't usually cook the larger meals requiring a stove. The kitchen is equipped with a microwave, 2 burner hot plate, crock pot, electric can opener, pots, pans, glassware, Mr. Coffee, dishes, silverware, cabinet space for guests food, items, and a barbecue grill right outside the kitchen door on back porch. It does not have a full size fridge, but it does have the mini size fridge approximately 3' . Extra freezer space is available outside the back door in the shed which houses small, frost-free chest freezer, washer, and dryer. Thanks again Amber for this input. I trust you are just making me aware of these items which were noteworthy to you and will not keep you from visiting us again soon. Please check us out and trust us to improve the things you felt needed attention. Thanks again! Karen

We enjoyed our stay at Lil Apple Bear Cottage. We had to call Ms. Karen about a small problem and she responsed very quickly. The cottage was clean and in a very nice area.A very short distance to the Dollar General at home we call it the "DG" or "Little Yellow Boutique". So glad we found this home away from home. Thanks

Owner's Response: Thanks for your input Mimi. And, you are right, the Dollar General at the turn-off road, I love it! This girl no longer fights the crowd at Walmart anymore....although I love Walmart, the one in Sevierville has to be one of the busiest in the country! Glad you enjoyed your stay. Please keep us in mind for your next visit. Thanks! Karen
