I grew up spending summers here and when my husband retired we moved to Steuben in 2007 and live less than 2 miles from the camp. There is no place we would rather be. We love the beauty and peace in the area.
Laura purchased this Cabin in 1950
Why Laura chose Steuben
A family owned cottage built by our parents in 1950. It has many happy memories of time spent with family and friends.
What makes this Cabin unique
It is an extremely quiet and peaceful place built very close to the ocean, which would not be allowed now.

Our fifth year spending a week (or two), our favorite oceanfront getaway in Maine
Our stay this summer was our fifth year at Laura's family's cabin, and it remains our favorite oceanfront getaway in Maine. It is private and quiet (except for the lobster boats and waterfowl on the Bay), completely relaxing. The bedroom layout is, as Laura's writeup indicates, a bit funky, but it doesn't diminish the stay one bit - the screened porch feet from the Bay more than makes up for any peculiarities of this family cabin. this year, we explored more of the day hikes available within a short drive - there are many, more than a dozen, maintained by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Petit Manan) and the very active Frenchman's Bay Conservancy, all within a short drive of the cabin. Also check out the local goat milk gelato, available (among other places) at Darthia Farm, and check out the family farm stand just off Route 1 between Steuben and Milbridge. We'll be back next year - Thanks Laura and family!
Perfect Spot on Gouldsboro Bay
Our third year spending a week in this family cottage on Gouldsboro Bay, and have already asked Laura to book us for 2016. Quiet, rustic, oceanfront with a nice view and breezes off the bay through the screened porch even on hot days, just the way we like it. We recommend the Darthia Farmstand in Gouldsboro, Painted Pepper Farm's phenomenal goat's milk gelato, and the local farmer's markets (Milbridge or Machias) for fresh blueberry pies. Hikes nearby at Petit Manan Point, in the National Wildlife Refuge, with dogs welcome on leash, and up Pigeon Hill (on the road out to Petit Manan) are perfect for hot summer days. Looking forward to next year!
Wow! What a beautiful stay! This was our first experience with the Acadia area and won't be our last. We loved the scenery, the cottage is right on the bay. We were able to watch the lobster boats right in front of us, the changing tides, bonfires at night on the rocks watching the stars, and reading by the water. We took walks to Petit Manan for the scenery and blue berry picking, Schoodic Peninsula for breathtaking views, walking Cadillac Mountain at Acadia National Park. So much, can't fit it all in! Laura's cottage was just right, with all the supplies you need for baking, bedding, and privacy! We hope to return!
I am really glad you had a good stay and hope you will be returning! It was nice to meet you and your family.
Our Second Stay As Nice As Our First
This is our second year staying in Laura's family's cottage on Gouldsboro Bay, and we hope not the last. It is just as we like it, a bit off the beaten path, a bit rustic but with all the conveniences, oceanfront with a nice view, quiet, and a screened porch - exactly right. Walked with the dog almost every day back to Rogers Point Road, then left out on to the point to the nice cobble beach looking out the Bay. Also highly recommend the hikes a short drive away at Petit Manan Point, in the National Wildlife Refuge, with dogs welcome on leash. Hoping to return to this Gouldsboro Bay camp next year!
This is our third year at this cabin. It is very comfortable. Almost everything we needed was supplied, including puzzles which my son and I spent time doing. We also watch lobster boats checking traps and loons and comarants diving. The owner has always been helpful and prompt. The Sunrise Trail is a terrific nearby railtrail from Elsworth to Ayre Junction, 85 miles. And you shouldn't miss Bar Harbor and Acadia Park, the ocean and scenery are breathtaking. You can avoid the traffic by taking the nearby ferry. Also, don't miss the fresh blueberry pie at Helen's Restaurant in Machias.
We stayed in Laura's family's cottage on Gouldsboro Bay from August 10 through August 17, 2013, and it met our expectations perfectly. We wanted something a bit off the beaten path, a bit rustic but with all the conveniences, oceanfront with a nice view, quiet, and a screened porch - exactly right. Good memories of long walks with the dog, breakfast on the porch while the lobster boats head out for the day, and reading on the granite ledges overlooking Gouldsboro Bay. The cottage has, as advertised, some quirks - headroom in the main bedroom slopes down to under 6 feet, for example - but that only added to our appreciation of the place for what it is, a Maine family summer waterfront cottage. For future visitors to this cabin, or anyplace else in the area, we highly recommend the Hollingsworth Trail on Petit Manan Point, in the National Wildlife Refuge - blueberries (in season), then a nice mix of Maine woods, cedar swamp, and cobble and granite shorefront, all in about 1.5 miles, with dogs welcome on leash.
