Overview

About the property

Cabin, 3 Bedrooms + Loft, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 8-10)

The name of our property is "The Anglers Hideaway", and for good reason. The setting is very secluded and is located on the Hiwassee River in Tennessee. The Hiwassee is a nationally known river for trout fishing. This river is also fun for rafters and kayakers alike. With the Cherokee National Forest out the back door one could hike or mountain bike all day and then some.

When at the cabin one feels as though they are away from it all. There's a babbling brook running through the front yard that's great to sleep to at night. Rocking chairs on the front and side porch make for a great spot to read a book or hang out with friends. A big yard for kids, and even a covered bridge leading to the property to add to the scenery.

Purchased and managed by two college room mates, and fishing buddies, the inside is kept just as if it were their personal home in the mountains. You will certainly find all the amenities needed to just relax and enjoy a few days in the woods. After all it is our goal to make you comfortable and to see you back again some day soon to the "Anglers Hideaway".

About Jim Terry / Rusty Garner

This is Rusty, co-owner of the Anglers Hideaway. He's one of the best fly fishermen in the southeast. This picture was taken in New Mexico on the San Juan River. Rusty has fished many rivers for trout across america but calls the Hiwassee River his home water.

Jim Terry / Rusty Garner purchased this cabin in 2006

Why Jim Terry / Rusty Garner chose Reliance

We chose to purchase this property because it is located on our favorite trout fishing stream close to home. I live in Atlanta and Rusty is in Birmingham. This property is within a couple hours drive for both of us. When we are not enjoying our property we want others to do so.

What makes this cabin unique

Our cabin looks and feels more like a home in the woods as opposed to other rental properties in the area that look and feel like a rental property. You'll find all the amenities you will need while staying away from home. We tell folks who rent the place; "just bring your food and fishing equipment, everything else is there". We are located on the river so once you're there you don't have to leave to fish, raft, or hike. It's a real break from reality and located only hours away from Atlanta, Birmingham, Knoxville, Nashville, Charlotte, and other surrounding areas.

Perfect cabin for trip down the Hiwassee

  • 5 of 5

This is our second year in the cabin for a Hiwassee weekend. It's so convenient, and the porch is wonderful for relaxing by the river. The kitchen was better stocked than last time. Thanks! We are already scheming our trip next year!

Quiet and peaceful!

  • 3 of 5

We love the location of this property. Even tho there is a campground nearby, it's very quiet. Also, the bedrooms of this cabin are larger than you might expect. But the real jewel is the outdoors. The property is large and there is a stream that runs the length of it. It's very wade-able - even for a 3 year old. From the covered porch with lots of seating, the picnic table and fire pit, there are many places to enjoy the singing of this lovely stream.

Our only complaint, is with the mattresses on the beds. After a long busy day, we were looking forward to a good night's sleep. The linens were fresh and smelled wonderful but the mattresses were a disappointment. They are very uncomfortable. I think so many people have enjoyed staying here that all the mattresses have just worn out and need to be replaced. I would love to hear from the owners if/when this happens because, honestly, this is the only reason we are not already planning our next visit. My granddaughters can't wait to go back : )

Owner's Response: We're so glad you enjoyed the Hideaway. Sorry for your experience with the mattress. At the end of every year we evaluate and replace all the items such as linens, furniture and kitchen utensils that do not meet our standards. We will carefully evaluate and / or replace the mattresses as necessary. Thanks again - Jim

Great Getaway House!

  • 5 of 5

This is the 3rd time our family of 6 has stayed at Angler's Hideaway. My husband has been coming to the Hiwassee since he was a high schooler in the early/mid 80's; his family sold their own cabin on the river a few years ago, and we were grateful to find a rental so close to where they used to own. This summer, we stayed at the cabin for 2 weeks, and we didn't want to leave when it was time to go. The location is ideal, and why we like staying here. You feel isolated while at the cabin, but a quick walk gets you to Hiwassee Outfitters, where you can rent rafts and tubes, get ice or limited supplies or check your email on their wifi--but only you want to stay in touch with the real world! A longer walk or quick drive takes you to Webbs and Flip Flip Burgers for more limited provisions at Webbs or a burger and drink at Flip Flop. (No major grocery stores, pharmacies, etc., up on the mountain.) Our family knows the area well, so our kids are also able to easily walk from the cabin down to Devil's Shoals or Thread the Needle to tube or play in the rapids. This year, we had two vehicles and also brought our own river tubes, car battery air pump, and life jackets, which allowed us to leave a car upriver and transport ourselves for tubing trips, saving fees from HO or Webbs--but for shorter visits, it may be easier to just use those services. The small creek behind the cabin also offers fun for younger children-our niece and her husband brought their toddler and preschooler for a visit while we were there, and they spent a lot of time exploring the creek and the area around the cabin.

The cabin is well equipped; there are plenty of towels, blankets, and pillows and the kitchen is well stocked for a large family. If you are there for a longer visit or you have a large family, I would advise bringing a cooler or two to keep on the porch for drinks; we did that and it freed up a lot of needed room in the refrigerator. We shopped in Etowah at Food City when we had to restock.

We like the fact that the cabin is rural and rustic and has no wifi or cell phone coverage. Our 21, 18, 17, and 12 year olds quickly adjust every year to being unplugged and when we aren't out on the river or the trails, we spend time playing board games, reading, and talking! (There is DirectTV and a landline--you will have to get a phone card for long distance calls.)

We just left and are already looking at our calendars to return next summer. Thank you Jim and Rusty!

Predictably fantastic

  • 5 of 5

This is our 5th year in a row of using this property for a reunion of high school/college buddies. Everything is always so perfect and enjoyable year after year after year. We are already counting the days until we can visit again. Thanks again to these owners for allowing us to borrow their little slice of heaven.
