Beside the Canal Du Midi, 30 Minutes ~From~ the Beach

Bedrooms 2
Property type house

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4-6)

This is a unique village property in the village of Capestang,in the heart of the Minervois region, famous for its canal, wine and spectacular scenery. The house itself is bright, airy and beautifully decorated with top quality items. The dining area seats six very comfortably and the outside terrace is ideal for al fresco eating and sipping a nice glass of local wine. The kitchen is well equipped with a professional cooker, and quality utensils. The front veranda has a table and chairs and ideal for watching village life go by. Both terraces have views over the Cathedral.

The Canal du Midi runs right through the center of Capestang and it boasts having the smallest bridge on the whole canal system. The village has a great variety of shops and the best bakery is 1 minute from the doorway. There is a colorful market twice a week where you can buy all your fresh fruit, cheeses, olives, flowers etc. There is also a large supermarket at the village entrance for other supplies. The village is very active in social events and there are great firework displays in the summer and also the village fete at the beginning of August.

Spain and the Pyrenees are only an hour away and you are also on the doorstep of the Haut Laungedoc National Park. Little medieval villages steeped in history are everywhere. We can provide bicycles for cycling along the townpath.

About The Owner

I am Irish, my husband René is French and we own a hotel barge called Emma which we cruise on the Canal du Midi from April through to November. We bought the house in Capestang as it is right in the middle of our most popular route between Beziers and Carcassonne and being only 2 mins walk from the canal was very handy for us. After spending the summer season working on the barge we love coming back to the house to chill out. We got married in the Mairie in Capestang last year and had our wedding breakfast in the garden with our friends and family.

The Owner purchased this house in 2007

What makes this house unique

We love this area as we are close to the sea but also close to the mountains and as we are keen off road drivers love having all the wide open space right on our doorstep.

great location, wonderful home

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I, plus three cats stayed these last 11days, in what became our home in a quintessential French village. By home, not only was the location superb, but the apartment had great accessories, comfy beds, and all the conveniences one would need, PLUS 100 yards from the town square, Canal du Midi, two bakeries, several restaurants, and two green grocers. Liz was also so helpful in guiding us to restaurants, a veterinarian. Great bathtub, kitchen and two terraces to enjoy one's croissants and coffee. Pluses include excellent Wifi, private parking space,

Capestang is only 20 mins to the beaches, and 10 minutes to Beziers for urban considerations, and oh BTW, Liz and her husband also rent a fully catered houseboat on the Canal, should you wish to combine water touring as well. We will rent again in the coming year off season

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for choosing our house for your vacation . It is our home and our hope is that our guests find it cosy, comfortable and practical. You have outlined all the reasons why we chose to live in Capestang, and we are glad you enjoyed your stay. You certainly explored this beautiful region and all it's little treasures. René and Iwill look forward to your return visit.

Excellent Apartment in a Great Area to Explore the Languedoc Region of France

  • 5 of 5

This was a beautifully appointed apartment with all the amenities to make an excellent stay for two couples. A fully equipped kitchen for those who like to cook and two bedrooms. There are balconies at the back and at the front. This is a quite area in a typical French rural area and a perfect home base to explore the Medieval City of Carcassonne, nearby Narbonne, Beziers and the canal town of Sete. The Canal du Midi is a short walk up the street. We felt quite at home here and it was nice to return each day after exploring the area. We would highly recommend it.

Great Place to stay for a couple

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I really liked the house and its central location. Capestang is a typical rural French town; small, but providing all the everyday necessities. The house was clean, comfortable and easy to maintain, with a functional kitchen for those who want to cook. Liz was very helpful, kind and hospitable. We want to go back.

Three glorious weeks!

  • 5 of 5

A wonderful home for our stay--the photos are accurate, and when you get there it is so much better in real life. Plenty of room for the 5 of us, the kitchen is well equipped and very functional--excellent for preparing the tasty meals from the market and local stores. The house was very clean and nicely decorated with comfortable beds. The 2 minute walk to the bakery was truly convenient for fresh breakfast baguette and/or delicious pastry depending on your daily preference. We enjoyed relaxing on the terrace with a coffee or glass of local wine. Great location for visiting other towns and sites in the Languedoc region. Our hosts were very enjoyable and full of information regarding places to visit and eat. Thank you Liz and Rene for sharing your home with us.

Owner's Response: You have just hit the button on why we love our house, our village and our region. Glad you made the most of it. Loved your music, Michel Plasson the big French conductor had a listen to it as well so you have played before the greatest.

Charming Property

  • 5 of 5

The well-equipped, modern kitchen allowed us to prepare the fresh produce, meats, cheeses, etc. available from the many local markets. An ideal location for nearby sight-seeing and long walks along the Canal. Our hosts were very charming and extremely accommodating. The house was warm and cosy, especially during the few days of rain and the many novels and travel books filled any down-time we had. Two wineries in the village provided great choices at reasonable prices. We would unquestionably recommend this property.

Owner's Response: We are so glad you enjoyed your time in this part of France at this time of year, all the benefits without all the crowds. The house is our home and as such is equipped for both the sunshine and the rain. I think you had more than your fair share of rain, so I am glad the library filled a few gray days. Loved meeting you. Bon Voyage et à bientot.

Excellent apartment but limited town

  • 5 of 5

We were most pleased by everything this apartment provided. Yes, the location description was accurate-you are in the center of this little town. The photos did not show how large, nicely decorated, homey and well appointed this apartment. It was spotless and well maintained, the kitchen and cooking implements perfect, nice linens, good mattress, multi entertainment system but no English channels.

The owner left some literature but was not present- so of no help. We were there in mid-November and the town of Capestang was empty with many shops/restaurants closed that week. A car is a must here to visit the surrounding towns unless you are barging the canal.

I would recommend this property to all but not in November [unless you want to only veg out.]

Owner's Response: There is a big difference in Capestang during the winter months when there are not so many people about, that can be quite an attraction. The main shops and restaurants remain open all year, and it is only the seasonal gift shops and outdoor "guingettes" which close. Glad you enjoyed the house and the countryside.
