About Us: We first came to St. John with friends in 1988 to escape the Northern winter, rented a house in Coral Bay, and fell in love with the island way of life. After about 10 more trips, we started looking seriously for a place to build our own special sanctuary, a 'down island' view, balmy evening breezes, and the magic of those island clouds that reflect all the colors of the sunset. Because we had rented numerous vacation homes, we knew just what we wanted for ourselves, and our guests. We try to get to St. John whenever we can to relax, recharge and just 'chill.'
Come see for yourselves why this place is so special!
Marguerite and Larry purchased this villa in 1996
Why Coral Bay, St. John? St. John is such a beautiful island. Two thirds is National Park with many gorgeous unspoiled beaches like famous Trunk Bay. Coral Bay is the 'quiet' side of the island, home of Skinny Legs burger place, and the relaxed yachting community - St. John as it has been for decades. The atmosphere may be laid back and casual, but there is plenty to do - great restaurants, shopping and activities including quick access to fabulous beaches.
Unique Place: We love the peaceful location of Villa Margherita. It is in a quiet, established area with well-maintained, paved lanes, completely private from neighbors: they're there, but you can't see them and they can't see you! It's a short drive from the house to everything you want to do and see.
To sit on the upper patio watching the full moon rise, sparkling off the Sir Francis Drake Channel - Magic!
Villa Margherita was a beautiful home, very private setting surrounded by lush gardens. The home was very comfortable and well equipped. The views of the Francis Drake Channel from the upper terrace were breathtaking. The proximity to the town of Coral Bay and the north shore beaches was ideal. Truly a vacation in paradise!
It was literally painful to leave at the end of our week-long stay. This was our 2nd time in St. John. Our first trip was to the Westin. That was fine, but we realized that with 2 children, it made more sense to be in a house. We also realized that we love to explore the unparalleled beaches of St. John, and the Westin's location isn't ideal for that. We found Villa Margherita and it looked like it was in a good location. After spending our time there, I modify that to say that it's a PERFECT location. It is about a 6-7 minute drive down to Coral Bay which has several good restaurants, a few shops, and a couple of markets (in other words, everything you need). We went to Crabby's on our first day to rent snorkel gear for the week too. And then if you go the other direction, you're just a 7-15 minute drive to all of the north shore beaches. And the access to get to this villa is pretty mellow... I've read and heard that many villas are up treacherous roads and/or driveways. This one really isn't by St. John standards. The house itself was very comfortable and well laid out. The second bedroom/full bath are in a separate guest building accessed across the patio, so depending on your family or group, that may or may not be ideal. We didn't use that room, as we wanted our daughters (5 and 8) in the same house as us. For teenagers or another couple, this lay out would be outstanding. The upstairs was awesome... we watched movies every night from the Blockbuster-sized dvd collection. Sunrise breakfasts at the bar or on the patio overlooking Tortola . The laundry machine was terrific. There's just nothing negative to say. The house was well-kept and clean too. If you haven't been to St. John, I highly recommend it. This is an island that is very easy to navigate, very safe, very clean, etc. The more populous side (that's relative) is around Cruz Bay. This home is close to Coral Bay, a sleepier town that feels kind of like a surfer town or something. Just more casual and low key than the comparatively busy Cruz Bay. There are a few cool places outside of Coral Bay too (Ms. Lucy's, Vie's), and these are a long trip from Cruz Bay (maybe 45-50 min depending). Cruz Bay is just about 20-25 minutes away, so you can go there for dinner once or twice, or you can hit a north shore beach in the morning, do lunch in Cruz Bay, then hit a different beach on the way home. This house is literally central to everywhere on the island. St. John is the best!
If you are looking for a place to chill in St. John check out this property. My family of four have stayed here not once, but five times now! It is a perfect little house that works for either a family of four or for two couples. Since we like to cook it's a must to have an outdoor grill and a kitchen. The Villa has both and both are in good working order. It also has a nice coffee pot with filters. The home is quite comfortable and has great views of the Mountains of St. John as well as the BVI's across the Sir Francis Drake Channel. Cool off at the end of the day with AC located in the Bedrooms and upstairs living area. We generally eat all of our meals on the outdoor patio overlooking the views and the hot tub below. Foliage on this property is also very nice! In addition, this place is very affordable which is not always the case on St. John. Coral Bay restaurants are six minute drive and closest beach (Maho) is seven minutes. I would highly recommend this villa over some of the other properties we have stayed at over the years.
We stayed at Larry and Marguerite’s beautiful house from February 16-24th and it was totally wonderful. The house is very modern, clean, and well-maintained, with every amenity you could ask for, from great linens and towels to beach towels and chairs, well-equipped kitchen, TV/entertainment system, wi-fi, washer and dryer, Weber grill, double sink bathroom, hundreds of DVDs and guidebooks, etc. It has beautiful landscaping, and the yellow bananaquit birds who sit on the bougainvillea and visit the patio are a delight to watch.
The view from the covered patio out to Sir Francis Drake channel is ever-changing with sea and sky, and the rear view to Bordeaux Mountain is great too. Sitting in the hot tub in the sun or with the rising moon was a treat. We love this quieter Coral Bay side of St. John with its close proximity to the best beaches (ten to fifteen minutes) and some excellent restaurants. We had total privacy and quiet, if you don’t count the occasional braying of the local donkeys. We only used the main bedroom, but can see that two couples would have perfect privacy here with the completely separate second bedroom suite.
On this island of jeeps and steep roads, the roads that approach to the house are moderate, with only a short stretch of steep but well-paved driveway.
What the photos don’t show is how spacious the house feels with its high ceilings and many windows. Its setting also provides wonderful cooling breezes and we never needed the air conditioning. We also appreciated the many thoughtful energy-saving “green” features of the house.
Villa Margherita was everything the VRBO description said and more. The view of the Caribbean and mountains provided the perfect backdrop to quiet meals on the deck and we found ourselves eating in most of the time to enjoy “the best seat in the house.” We managed to use up the LP tank attached to your Weber grill and hooked up the full back up tank thoughtfully left by your management company, Windspree. After dinner entertainment went no further than your incredible collection of CDs, DVDs, and Video Cassettes. The audio/video system gave us a theater-like experience every night.
We were surprised by the beautiful plantings outside with blooming plumeria, hibiscus and bougainvillea. Inside color choices and rattan/bamboo furnishings helped to complete that tropical island feel. In such a desirable setting we were also surprised by the privacy and total absence of neighboring homes from view and the house is high enough on the mountain to enjoy constant breezes, which eliminated bugs and the need for air conditioning.
The house was actually larger than we expected and the separate bedroom suite provided our son and his girlfriend both privacy and proximity to the main house. It also helped set the stage for his wedding proposal and her acceptance. Who knows, we may be enjoying a destination wedding back on St. John and Villa Margherita will be our first choice of places to stay.
We just got home from our week-long stay at Villa Margherita and I wanted to post a review right away. The Villa was a perfect place for 5 adults to use as a home base for our days of snorkeling and swimming. We love the Coral Bay side, since it's a little quieter, and Villa Margherita is located perfectly to access the beautiful beaches, the East End, and Salt Pond, and is just a quick drive to Cruz Bay for supplies. And if we forgot anything at home, we could easily just pop up the hill and get what we needed.
The Villa is so comfortable and perfect for a small or medium-sized party. We had 5 adults (2 couples and 1 single) and were comfortable in the two master suites and the sleeping area in the den. The fully-stocked kitchen and grill allowed us to cook some fantastic meals. We spent our mornings and evenings on the upstairs porch overlooking the fantastic view of the channel, or in the living/dining room, with all of the windows open, enjoying the island breezes. Some of us rounded out our full days with a nice soak in the hot tub.
The Villa was fully stocked with linens, beach towels and even beach chairs, which we happily threw in the back of the Jeep and used at the beach. Plus, it was so handy to have a washer and dryer to do a quick load of laundry when needed.
We loved the lush gardens surrounding the Villa, and enjoyed identifying all of the beautiful tropical flowers. If we had any questions about St. John at all, the many guidebooks available at the Villa answered them quickly. The Villa really does have everything we could need!
We had a fabulous stay at Villa Margherita and look forward to coming back!
"Thank you for allowing us to experience your little slice of heaven with my husband and myself. This was our 5th time vacationing on St. John. We celebrated our 20 year wedding anniversary.
Your villa was beyond fantastic! The decor, the cleanliness, the organized book you designed for your guests, the privacy your home offers, the landscape, the view looking over towards Tortola and the technology that you have is five stars. (Husband loved the WiFi you provided)
Thank you so much Larry and Marguerite. A week that we won't ever forget. When we return next year, we may just have to "rebook" your villa, if available. Just outstanding!!!
P.S. Did I mention that we wore the beautiful, soft white robes that you provided (with your Villa logo) each and every night? What a nice, personal added touch!
