About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 8)

As you slide into the parking area, nestled in the sand under the cottage, the love affair begins. You can’t wait to curl your toes in the sand; thanks to the deeded access, just 25 steps from the house and you’re ON THE BEACH!

As you head back to check out the cottage, you note the secluded outside shower. When you walk in the front door upstairs, the light, spacious interior takes you aback. This is no cookie-cutter rental: With walls the blue-green of the Gulf and crisp white trim, the peace of the cottage engulfs you. Windows that flood the room with light offer breathtaking views.

You move into the kitchen, where a bottle of wine welcomes you. As you pop some potatoes in the convection oven, the gleaming granite countertops and wonderful equipment inspire you to do some awesome meals while you’re here.

The kids have already checked out the bedrooms and bathrooms, which offer the same beautiful décor. With original art throughout, the cottage already feels like home. The owners have thought of everything—a wire crate for the dog, puzzles and games for the kids, even a sippy cup and some cereal bowls, just in case you forgot something. With a washer and dryer and a generous supply of linens, the beautifully appointed bedrooms and baths promise exceptional comfort and ease.

After dinner, you watch a breathtaking sunset from the gazebo swing. Then you head back to the beach for a walk--how great to be just steps away! The wide, sandy beach is spectacular and on-leash dogs are welcome; you can’t wait to explore more tomorrow. And the neighborhood is amazing--no generic concrete structures, no crowds, no parking lots, no bright lights, no traffic, no noise. The stars are so clear you think you could touch them.

As you're lulled to sleep by the sound of the surf, you wonder why you only booked only ONE week. You decide to book for next year now, because this is definitely YOUR Fort Morgan house.

About Jeanne Hurlbert

Jack and Jeanne are retired Louisiana State University professors; Jack is truly retired and Jeanne now works as a survey and data consultant. We have a 13-year-old daughter, a corgi, and a rescue chihuahua--which is why our house is both kid- and pet-friendly. We've tried to make our house the kind of place we love to rent, with more the feel of a 'B&B' than a stock-issue condo.

Jeanne Hurlbert purchased this house in 2008

Why Jeanne Hurlbert chose Alabama

We bought The Lighthouse because Ft. Morgan represents a true treasure--one of the last 'beach frontiers.' The lack of development means that wildlife and birds remain, people are friendly, and when you walk on to the porch at night, it truly feels as if you could reach out and touch the stars.

What makes this house unique

We have tried hard to provide everything a family needs. We've provided a flat screen, HD TV with satellite, DVD players, an iPod dock, a gourmet kitchen, a Weber grill, teak table and chairs on the deck, and a wonderful swing (that swing was where our love affair with The Lighthouse began). We want our guests to feel at home. The fact that we're 25 steps from the beach means that you can feel connected to the beach and ocean and often watch pods of dolphins from the house. Beautiful sunsets and the peace and tranquility of Ft. Morgan await you here.

Great location and exactly what we expected

  • 4 of 5

The home was well maintained and the location was great. We only had a slight issue with the kitchen sink leaking but it was addressed quickly. The back yard was trimmed but the yard has sticker burrs everywhere so we had to be careful when walking our dog. The owner is very responsive, friendly and ensured our satisfaction.

All appliances and the air system worked as expected as well.

Owner's Response: Thanks Kelly! So glad you enjoyed your stay. The sand burrs are a problem all around the area that we are addressing as much as we can. We hope you can be our guests again! Best, Jeanne

The absolute best

  • 5 of 5

We had the best time. The Lighthouse is just across the street from the beach. We could see the ocean and hear the

waves coming in. There was always a comfortable breeze on the porch under the gazebo. The house was roomy and

was stocked with plenty of towels and kitchen items. Our pups were welcome which made for a good trip. We do not

like leaving them behind. We would definitely love to stay at the lighthouse again!

Perfectly amazing

  • 5 of 5

Our stay was absolutely perfect. The house had so much more in it available for us than we would ever have thought. We have stayed in 5 star resorts that offered way less than this house did. It is in a great private location but still convenient to shopping, grocery stores, water parks and just everything.

We loved this house so much we booked it 2 days after returning home for our 30th anniversary in September. The only thing I would change is the sand burs, but that's just part of it. My husband an I and our pup Penny couldn't have been happier.

Owner's Response: Thank you so very much! Nothing makes us happier than when our guests have a great experience. And we are working on the sand burs! They're endemic around all the houses in the area, we're digging them out as best we can. We look forward to having you celebrate your anniversary at The Lighthouse! Best, Jeanne

We love staying at the Lighthouse. It has everything we want for our vaction spot.

  • 4 of 5

We have stayed at the Lighthouse two years in a row. It is so comfortable. The kitchen has everything we could possibly need. The two bathrooms are nice and have double sinks which comes in really handy. The house is very clean and decorated for a fun stay at the beach. The porch faces the gulf so when it is cool it is warm enough to sit outside. We sat in the gazebo many evenings and watched the sun go down. The view of the gulf is beautiful. It is only a few steps to the beach. The house is on a dead end street so there is very little traffic.

About a mile to the west there is a nice restaurant and bar and grocery store. We walked there several times. A few miles to the east there is another bar and restaurant that has music on Sunday from five to eight. We enjoyed going there and eating and listening to the music. Gulf Shores is a quick 15 minutes away. There is a gas station and Dollar store on the way and is very convenient.

The homeowner is super nice. If we had a question or needed something she was very helpful. She would text sometimes to see how we were doing or if we needed anything. We would recommend staying at this rental to any of our friends or relatives.

Ft. Morgan represents a rare gem--a quiet, uncrowded, unspoiled beach. Area residents are enormously friendly. Although our piece of paradise is away from the Gulf Shores crowds, we still lie within easy access of the outlet mall, restaurants, water park, and Gulf Shores attractions, giving us the best of both worlds.

On Ft. Morgan itself, we have a marina, restaurants, convenience and liquor stores as well as a variety store (Dollar General), golf courses, numerous churches, a wildlife refuge, a bird sanctuary, a state park at the fort, bike lanes, access to deep sea fishing, and kayak rentals (Russ will deliver your kayak right to our house and pick it up at the end of your stay!).
