Overview

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 8)

As you slide into the parking area, nestled in the sand under the cottage, the love affair begins. You can’t wait to curl your toes in the sand; thanks to the deeded access, just 25 steps from the house and you’re ON THE BEACH!

As you head back to check out the cottage, you note the secluded outside shower. When you walk in the front door upstairs, the light, spacious interior takes you aback. This is no cookie-cutter rental: With walls the blue-green of the Gulf and crisp white trim, the peace of the cottage engulfs you. Windows that flood the room with light offer breathtaking views.

You move into the kitchen, where a bottle of wine welcomes you. As you pop some potatoes in the convection oven, the gleaming granite countertops and wonderful equipment inspire you to do some awesome meals while you’re here.

The kids have already checked out the bedrooms and bathrooms, which offer the same beautiful décor. With original art throughout, the cottage already feels like home. The owners have thought of everything—a wire crate for the dog, puzzles and games for the kids, even a sippy cup and some cereal bowls, just in case you forgot something. With a washer and dryer and a generous supply of linens, the beautifully appointed bedrooms and baths promise exceptional comfort and ease.

After dinner, you watch a breathtaking sunset from the gazebo swing. Then you head back to the beach for a walk--how great to be just steps away! The wide, sandy beach is spectacular and on-leash dogs are welcome; you can’t wait to explore more tomorrow. And the neighborhood is amazing--no generic concrete structures, no crowds, no parking lots, no bright lights, no traffic, no noise. The stars are so clear you think you could touch them.

As you're lulled to sleep by the sound of the surf, you wonder why you only booked only ONE week. You decide to book for next year now, because this is definitely YOUR Fort Morgan house.

About Jeanne Hurlbert

Jack and Jeanne are retired Louisiana State University professors; Jack is truly retired and Jeanne now works as a survey, data, and predictive analytics consultant. We have a 15-year-old daughter, a corgi, and a rescue chihuahua--which is why our house is both kid- and pet-friendly. We've tried to make our house the kind of place we love to rent, with more the feel of a 'B&B' than a stock-issue condo.

Jeanne Hurlbert purchased this house in 2008

Why Jeanne Hurlbert chose Alabama

We bought The Lighthouse because Ft. Morgan represents a true treasure--one of the last 'beach frontiers.' The lack of development means that wildlife and birds remain, people are friendly, and when you walk on to the porch at night, it truly feels as if you could reach out and touch the stars.

What makes this house unique

We have tried hard to provide everything a family needs. We've provided a flat screen, HD TV with satellite, DVD players, an iPod dock, a gourmet kitchen, a Weber grill, teak table and chairs on the deck, and a wonderful swing (that swing was where our love affair with The Lighthouse began). We want our guests to feel at home. The fact that we're 25 steps from the beach means that you can feel connected to the beach and ocean and often watch pods of dolphins from the house. Beautiful sunsets and the peace and tranquility of Ft. Morgan await you here.

Great spot for a getaway!

The home was very comfortable and had all the amenities we needed. Really enjoyed being able to bring our dog, too. Perfect for a relaxing week at the beach! Thank you!!

As always the sugar white beaches were amazing!!!

  • 2 of 5

The house had the worst layout of any that we have stayed in over the years of vacationing in Fort Morgan. The tiny kitchen and bathrooms were difficult for a family of five. The kitchen's lack of counter space and lack of baking and frying pans made preparing meals a real challenge. The bathrooms did have double vanities but due to their small size had no counter space. The "master bedroom and bathroom" concept was concept only due to the master bath being across the hall. The ceiling fan in the master bedroom was broken. The shower in the hall/master bathroom was very nice with the tile and glass door but, again, the bathroom was so small that you had to almost climb over the toilet to get into the shower. Both the porch and stair systems were nice and made accessing the home easy and convenient. The teak table and chairs on the deck were very nice. Beach was easy to access and just a short walk away from the home. We love Fort Morgan and will be back next year but will rent something more suitable for a family of five.

Owner's Response: We're so sorry that you didn't have a good experience--we always want our guests to have a great time. Regarding the master bedroom/bath, I'm a bit confused because the master bath does connect to the master bedroom. The second bath is across the hall from the second bedroom. I was also a bit confused about the kitchen issue .. . We do have 2 fry pans/skillets, a complete set of heavy-gauge stainless cookware + extra pots and pans, a full set of Corning bakeware + 2 rectangular Pyrex glass baking dishes, cookie sheets, a roasting pan, and muffin tins. The ceiling fan is replaced.

Very well kept. Nice owners each side of house. Well equiped and cleaned.

Enjoyed our week very much. Thanks for renting to pet owners. A little further to the beach than anticipated, wife has to use a walker, but we made it. Other people parking on the road sides create problems trying to get through with my boat. Sand spurs are not in danger there, too bad there are so many of them. We probably tracked in more spurs than we did sand. Overall we had a great time and hated to leave. Would recommend this house to any of my friends. Thanks for renting to us. Very well supplied with most of what you need.

Wish we could have stayed 2 weeks!

  • 5 of 5

Enjoyed a wonderful vacation in this beach house. It had everything we needed for a great price. Loved the area, so peaceful with friendly neighbors. We plan to return next year! We definitely recommend this property and it was great to bring our dog. It was refreshing to be away from all the crowds we have experienced with our past beach vacations. Sassy Bass was a definite plus as a local convenient place to eat and shop. Fort Morgan offers twilight tours on Tuesday evenings through the summer months. We highly recommend this not only for the history but also for the beautiful sunsets! The bottle of wine was a sweet treat. It was an extra bonus to have the outdoor shower and gazebo porch swing. Listing to the waves was relaxing while drinking coffee in the morning or sipping wine in the evening.

Beautiful little beach house within steps of the water.

  • 5 of 5

The beach house is within a few steps of a beach access. From the time you step out the front door, the beach is about a minute's walk. They have very nice accommodations and everything that you may need in the kitchen. Could easily sleep eight. Have meals on the deck or just sit in the swing in the gazebo and enjoy the wonderful views of the water. Don't hesitate, book your time and enjoy your visit. Going through VRBO makes the process easy.

Great home to stay in for vacation

  • 5 of 5

The house was super cute, clean and well stocked with most necessities. Just across the street from the beach. The enclosed patio area was perfect for our dog to hang out on, he loved it. We will definitely want to stay there again. It was comfy and felt like home.

Ft. Morgan represents a rare gem--a quiet, uncrowded, unspoiled beach. Area residents are enormously friendly. Although our piece of paradise is away from the Gulf Shores crowds, we still lie within easy access of the outlet mall, restaurants, water park, and Gulf Shores attractions, giving us the best of both worlds.

On Ft. Morgan itself, we have a marina, restaurants, convenience and liquor stores as well as a variety store (Dollar General), golf courses, numerous churches, a wildlife refuge, a bird sanctuary, a state park at the fort, bike lanes, access to deep sea fishing, and kayak rentals (Russ will deliver your kayak right to our house and pick it up at the end of your stay!).
