** Owner is sometimes on the property in the attached writing studio, with separate entrance and private deck. You have exclusive use of the house and yard during your stay. You might cross paths, but more likely you'll only see me if I'm out watering flowers or we meet in the driveway.

** For your security, there are some perimeter cameras on the property. They do not intrude on your privacy. If you have any concerns, please let me know.

Thanks to guests Jim Thompson (May, 2010), Wendy Moran (2007 - 2010) for photos taken during their stays at Bluff House.

Guest email during Bluff stay:: The house is wonderful. I wonder if I might extend my stay for two more nights if it is available. I would love to meet you as well. This house is truly a haven for me and I am so appreciative for the time here. -- Wendy M., New York

About Beverly Hanly

I'm a writer and editor. I love traveling, hiking, making photographs, dinners with friends, hearing live music, and reading.

Why Beverly Hanly chose Westhaven-Moonstone

I fell in love when I walked through the gate -- plain and simple, it felt like home. There's an intimate view of the rocks below and the house is perfectly aligned with them. But yet you see the whole sweep of the ocean. The curve of the bay to the north and Trinidad Head is close but when you look to the south, you see the long stretch of Clam Beach and all the way to Cape Mendocino on a clear day. It's a nice place to plant flowers, but the natural landscaping and the ocean provide enough beauty so I can keep yard work to a minimum.

What makes this cottage unique

There's simply no better view on the coast. The combination of being at the end of the lane (so nobody walking by), the protected side yard, and the wide open access to the Pacific is just the perfect combination. I can sit inside the house with a book and feel like I'm at the beach but nobody will bother me. It's a simple cottage in a stunning location, which is just right for me.

The best thing about the Trinidad area is the many uncrowded beaches and hikes through the redwoods and Fern Canyon. Add friendly locals, fishing out of Trinidad harbor, and easy-access kayak rental at two local lagoons. Find local fresh seafood, plenty of organic groceries, and several farmers markets. A lively arts and music scene surrounds the university in nearby Arcata with central town plaza. World-renowned marsh and wetlands, Humboldt Bay and Eureka old-town and historic Ferndale are also nearby. Good restaurants make for a special night out. Seasonal festivals, such as the Mad River Festival in nearby Blue Lake feature theater talent from around the world; Oyster Festival in Arcata celebrates local aquaculture and food; Wild Blackberry Festival in Westhaven and Trinidad Fish Festival are small, local community events.

Great location, well stocked rental home

  • 5 of 5

The property is perched on a huge cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The views represented in the photos on the website are accurate. Gorgeous views! The house was well stocked with all the kitchen essentials needed for preparing meals. We highly recommend this property and would definitely stay again if we are in the area. We were about 20-30 min away from the visitor center for Redwood National Park which was our main reason for staying here. Grocery store was about 5 min away in Trinidad.

The most beautiful home with a spectacular view on the bluffs of Trinidad

  • 5 of 5

Once again, we stayed at this magnificent property and again, was not disappointed. From the moment you walk through the arbor from the parking area you are hit in the face with the most beautiful view of this lovely area called Trinidad.

This past visit was a full down time for my husband and I after a very busy summer. And that is exactly what we did. We left the house just one day and spent the remaining 4 days just enjoying this beautiful home and the views. Watching the surfers below every day and seeing whales and hearing the crash of the surf below. We caught up on reading, relaxing and taking naps outside. We had our cocktails outside every evening and barbecued 3 nights out of the 4 and enjoyed the scenery while eating.

The home is very welcoming, comfortable and spotless. The kitchen is stocked with everything you need during your stay.

If you are in this area and the calendar is available we highly recommend this home. The owner, Beverly is a Gem. We had a chance once again to sit and have a conversation with her while we were here. A lovely woman.

We will most definitely come back to this area in 2018 and will work around the availability of Beverly’s calendar to plan our trip.

Enjoy everyone who stays here.

Perfect ocean setting

  • 4 of 5

We were looking for a water getaway on the coast nearest our high desert home in NM. Bluff House is wonderful. A simple rustic home with all the necessities. The wow factor is the views of the Pacific up and down the coast. Though visiting the fun and interesting towns of Trinidad and Arcata and the abundant restaurant and coop scene was a pleasure, we were sad to leave Bluff House even for a few hours. Local wines and cheeses were excellent. Artisanal breads exceptional.

Charming secluded cottage with spectacular views of Trinidad Bay

  • 5 of 5

I really enjoyed Bluff House while on a visit to hike in Redwood National Park and the adjacent state parks. Beverly has great taste and has furnished the house with style and comfort and the area, just around the bay and south of Trinidad village was astonishingly quiet (to me as a city person), with only the murmur of the waves on the beach way down below. I'm already planning my next trip. Out of towners note: the house is a 10 minute drive north--about 6 or 7 miles, I think, of the very tiny and very convenient Arcata/Eureka Airport, which provides connections to Portland, San Francisco and elsewhere. Fully-furnished kitchen and wrap around ocean views from house and lovely patio make cooking in a pleasure.

Enchanting!

  • 5 of 5

Already planning our next trip. It felt like my husband and I were the only two people left on Earth. The house has the best views and is so secluded. It's exactly what we wanted to get away. We had a bit of crazy adventures during our travels, but everything was blissfully perfect at the house. So cozy and cotagy inside with the fireplace and sound of the waves and cool breeze from the windows. Everything was squeaky clean and had all the amenities we needed. The garden outside is also well kept with my favorites- succulents! The whole house and property is enchanting!

This house is perfect for those who love nature and love to explore and hike like we do. The house is near many hiking parks such as Patrick's Point (Seals are here) and Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park (Elk and Deer are here) which Fern Canyon is also in. The beach below the bluff is a definite must see. You really can not go wrong with any direction you go in. Scenery and things to do are at every corner. Wish we had time to go kyacking, but maybe next trip.

I also suggest eating at Trinidad Bay Eatery and Gallery on Main Street- best authentic New England clam chowder and crab eggs benidict (with poached eggs)- drooling! The crab was fresh with just the right sweet/saltiness. The fish and chips were also fresh and yummy. They also have wonderful service and if you can, sit outside on a nice brisk day. Cute shops and little town right there. However, I do not recommend Salt Fish House in Arcata- ironically their food needed salt, the seafood was old and fishy, and they do not know how to make Spanish Paella (tried to lie to me, a cook, about it too.)

Speaking of cooking, the kitchen at the house is a chefs dream! It's beautiful! Perfect size and ora to cook a romantic dinner. Some seasonings are included, but I brought a few of my own because that's how I am lol. I suggest shopping at Safeway grocery store about 15 minutes away. They are open 24 hours and have wine and liquor!

And last but definitely not least is Beverly. She is the absolute best host. You can tell she cares about her guests and is there for you with all the information and more. She will keep in touch by text and give you all the privacy you need during your stay. I asked her to come out of the studio to meet because she was such a doll over the messages. We were very happy to have met her in person and had a long interesting chat with her. Hope to see her next time ❤️

Spectacular Spot!

  • 5 of 5

My husband, myself and our grandson were welcomed and felt so comfortable in the Bluff House, in the neighborhood, and in the entire Trinidad area. The owner was extremely helpful in giving us information to explore the area. Everything about the charming home was highly satisfactory for us. We enjoyed the privacy and quiet solitude, the sounds of the ocean, and the beautiful views. Thank you!
