About The Owner

We are a family of 6 from Charlotte

The Owner purchased this cottage in 2004

Why The Owner chose West Beach

It has everything to do, but is private and beautiful. The resort has nightly activities for all ages, but there are no crowds to manage. The beach is wonderful and Charleston is only 40 minutes away.

What makes this cottage unique

Directly across the street from the pool and nearly on the beach (you can hear the ocean on the deck). With private view of Sparrow Pond, you can enjoy the wonderful low country evenings in solitude.

Our stay at 1091 Sparrow Pond Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Just completed a five night stay at 1091 Sparrow Cottage and will have to say that it was one of the best trips that we have been on. The location was great, being close enough to the beach that my father-in-law and mother-in-law could walk to it and close enough to the swimming pool that my 5 year old niece could basically live there. I would estimate that the swimming pool is no more than 300 feet from the cottage. We had a good size number of folks with us and when we got there we thought that could be a problem but it was not a problem whatsoever. The dining room is great as it overlooks Sparrow Pond. This was our first trip to Kiawah Island and it turned out to be a good one. Great beach to walk on in the mornings and to ride bikes on in the evening. Seems like Kiawah is kind of geared for bike riders and although we did our part of riding, I know we didn't begin to scratch the surface of all of the paths on the Island. In one of the previous reviews, it stated that gators were in the pond out back and we saw at least one and maybe two. While biking we saw a number of gators in the several different ponds throughout the Island. The owner of this property was great to deal with in renting the cottage. In closing, yes, I would recommend this cottage and yes, I would recommend a trip to Kiawah Island.

Had a wonderful week

  • 5 of 5

The rental is fabulous and we enjoyed our stay. Everything was clean and the kitchen was well stocked with everything we needed. The view from the dining room and porch over the lake and forest is very nice. We saw a deer and a cormoran drying its feathers. The windows would need some cleaning and the view out from the inside out would be even better. But it's probably difficult to clean since it's at the second floor.

The pool is just across the street and the beach is just a short walk past another line of houses and over the dunes along a nice board walk. My son enjoyed riding his bike on the beach while I got a few miles running in. Very, very nice.

Our biggest gripe was the construction close to the beach. They were ramming some poles into the ground and they tended to start at 8:15 am. Luckily they did some very load hammering, then nothing for an hour, then again some hammering, and so on till maybe 4 or 5. So the evening and night was very quiet and peaceful. But I think they're probably finished soon. So if you plan to come end of June or later this will be likely not a problem anymore.

We did a bike tour to the end of the island and came across some very nice and expensive villas. The streets or bike trails are mostly in the shadow of large trees and you will also see some very nice gardens.

I can only recommend Kiawah Island and this particular rental. It was a very nice vacation.

June Kiowa Trip

  • 4 of 5

Excellent setting and convenient. Everything within the cottage was in good working order. Loved the Weber grill.

The only heads up for future renters is about the beach chairs. They are hardly worth carrying to the beach.

Aside from that, it the cottage met or exceeded our expectations!

You pay for the location, not the living space.

  • 2 of 5

Although the location was outstanding (we come to Kiawah Island for the beach experience and we have children who enjoy swimming in a pool as well), my overall impression of the cottage was that of disappointment. Starting with the kitchen; there is little space for you to put dry goods as there are no cabinets and the available shelf/countertop space is occupied by dishes, pots/pans, and small appliances... the tiny 'closet' contained the glassware. We did dine out, but enjoy eating breakfast and lunch in the beach house. The master bedroom is small; the bed takes up the whole room, there is one tiny closet, the light on the nightstand has a separate switch on the cord that is to work with the wall switch, and the bathroom is... functional. Though the off-centered toilet seat took time to get used to. The other bedrooms appeared to be more functional, though I did not sleep in them. The open living space was nice... comfy couches, a big table, and a beautiful view of the lagoon. There were dry, dead leaves on the rooftop that needed to be blown off as they tumbled onto the deck each day and made damp slippery spots in certain areas. I swept the deck off twice while we were there... I like to walk barefoot and the leaves did not make it pleasant. As for the beach amenities... there were 6 boogie boards for the kids to use, 4 of the 6 were broken... also, we did not bring our backpack beach chairs because the description said the house had 2. We did not find them, there were two of those folding (packable) chairs folks often use to watch children's soccer games... maybe that is what they meant? There was one folding beach chair. One thing I thought odd was that based on the great location (being close to the beach and pool) one would think the cottage would appeal to families with children, yet there were bottles of alcohol on the counter top (rum, vodka, gin) and the coffee tables have glass tops (granted they were very nice) but they were somewhat fragile and could present a safety hazard to children. The 'boat' table was very much this way. We have been taking beach vacations for 15 years now and have never had a rental property come equipped with booze. Don't get me wrong, I like my beer. We had family stay the same week in Greenslake cottages (just around the corner) for MUCH less and a MUCH nicer cottage. We need to do better research next time.

Owner's Response: We apologize for your bad experience. I am appalled that the liquor was left by the cleaning company and have already sent a message to ensure that never happens again. We will make sure we address the chairs/boogie boards we generally try not to provide these as they get easily ruined and we have a hard time "monitoring" the status of those items.

Cozy and relaxing

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at this cozy cottage. It was spacious enough to fit our party of 6adults & 2 children comfortably. Everyone had their own space but yet living area was large enough for us to all hang out in. The kitchen is small but we were happily surprised by how well it was equipped. Almost more cooking supplies than my own kitchen at home! The dining area was my favorite place. I loved having my coffee there in the mornings & looking out over the pond. We watched deer & other birds almost every day. We also really enjoyed the neighborhood atmosphere this cottage is located in. A great place for walking, running, bike riding, or strolling babies, and just a short walk to the beach. I highly recommend this cottage & would love to stay here again on a return trip to Kiawah Beach.
