Apartment, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)
We moved to the Big Island in 1987 and built our home in Captain Cook in1988. We added our two vacation rentals on our 1 1/4 acre property in 2002. We have one dog. His name is Peaberry and he is 9 years old. Along with a Siamese cat named Mr. Mow, who is 15. We built the main house and carport. In 2000 we enclosed the garage and added two units to our 1 acre property. We loved the large stand of bamboo, so it was a focal point in the design of our two rental units. To achieve the feel of the outside we built large screened lanai's and double sliders and windows to let in light and the views of water, flora and fauna. However always with privacy in mind. Each unit has its own parking area close to the front door.

Why Owner chose Captain Cook
This property is in the beautiful coffee belt of Hawaii. Green and lush with beautiful ocean views. We love the tropical plants and animal life here. Birds and gecko's alike love the papaya and bananas. Turkeys and pigs roam the macadamia orchids beside us, as well and below us. We also have a small shopping center that provides a grocery store, hardware store and post office just up to the hwy and to the North. We don't get any hwy noise unless a siren occasionally, from police or ambulance. We love the rural-ness of the location, yet the convenience of a grocery store, hardware store, post office and a few good restaurants. We moved to the Big Island in 1987 and built our home in Captain Cook in1988. We added our two vacation rentals on our 1 1/4 acre property in 2002. Another 10 min. and you are in Kailua-Kona. Also only about 12 min. down to Two Step for snorkeling, kayaking and the National Park. Many coffee farms and macadamia farms to visit and a must visit is the Japanese living coffee farm. Beautiful view and comfortable accommodations
Perfect little abode for the 2 of us with a spectacular view. We enjoyed seeing geckos, mongoose, different types of birds and hearing the frogs at night. The only drawback was during our last night, people checked in at the property upstairs, and you could hear every step they made. Other than that, it really was a lovely place to stay, being away from the hubbub of Kona.
4.5 out of 5 Stars - Amazing Views from Large Lanai
We enjoyed our stay, especially the large screened lanai with its amazing views of the coastline and the sounds of nature all around. We spent a lot of time on the lanai during our 3 days here. As noted in the description, this studio apartment is compact but comfortable overall. The photos on the VRBO site are accurate. A small dresser or some shelf space for clothes, etc., would be a great addition but not sure there is room for that. (We were spoiled because our previous rental, in Kailua-Kona, had tons of space and some extra amenities, like sunscreen and various toiletries.) We appreciated the beach and snorkel equipment and the washer and dryer and detergent for our use in the garage. I had been concerned about possible noise from people in the unit above (based on some other reviews) but that was not a problem at all and in fact we never saw the other couple. Our hosts were away during our stay but a friend was house sitting for them. One minor issue, which was really just cosmetic and I assume will be fixed soon, was that a wooden panel on the front of the bathroom vanity (the piece above the drawers) was missing.
Aloha, thank you for your review.
I'm surprised about your comment no small dresser, as there is one right under the TV. It has 3 drawers so perhaps you meant a larger ( taller )dresser, with more drawers. There is a picture on the site showing the side of the dresser across from the bed and below the TV. The DVD player is on top of it now but there is enough room, going u,p for a couple more drawers. At different times there is an a ray of items in the medicine cabinet, including sun screen, hand lotion, hydrogen Peroxide, etc. Also a first aid kit for small cuts and scratches. Yes, we are aware of the missing panel on the bathroom vanity.
Someone thought it was a drawer and pulled it off and broke the top clip holders. He has found it difficult to find replacement clips so has now figured out how to fix it a different way. That will be fixed shortly.
Jungle roost with a view!
We loved the screened lanai and open breezy feeling here. Hosts were friendly and welcoming but never disturbed us in any way. We would stay again.
The view in person is even more beautiful than the pictures. The outside area is well protected against most pests and is very comfortable. Inevitably some bugs/small lizards get in, but that comes with being in Hawaii. The location is close to a lot of good snorkeling, and about 25 minutes from Kailua.
The room is in good shape, comfortable bed and couch with a functional kitchen. The bathroom door was off its track for our stay, but seems like an easy fix. We weren’t aware there would be similar renters right above us, but it didn’t matter much.
We do hope you enjoyed your stay! We were not aware of the door problem before you informed us but have fixed the pocket door. Our handy man came and removed the door trim to get the door out to repair the top roller that had come loose and wouldn't stay on the track. The handy man could not come until Monday, 4 days after you left and when no guests would be there.
We know now that we should have communicated that to you and asked if that would be ok, since you could move the door by lifting up on it and pulling it over. We are sorry if it caused you any discomfort during your stay. We are glad you informed us about it so we could fix it. We do try to keep our two units in top condition so our guests thoroughly enjoy their vacation. Mahalo for staying with us and we do hope you will return. Aloha Greg and Nancy
Peace quiet convenient amazing FIVE STARS
We enjoyed staying here in Captain Cook and will FOR SURE be returning to stay here again. We had everything we could possibly need for our week. Our hosts were magnificent. There are not enough adjectives to express our gratitude to be allowed to stay in their ohana home, enjoying the birds singing in the peaceful amazing beautiful mornings to the colorful quiet sun set evenings. We were out on the lanai at sunrise, about 6:12 am; went off on adventures; and returned to enjoy everything our view had to offer IN the evenings. THANK YOU SO MUCH
Peaceful refuge, perfect!
We loved everything about our stay here! This refuge was a calming balm, every sense was delighted. While fairly close to the market and restaurants it was far enough away that we seldom heard a vehicle. We perched on the hillside and watched the moods of the Pacific while becoming familiar with different bird song. We had all the privacy we wanted, yet knew that we could ask for anything we needed help with easily. But we didn't need a thing as all was available and worked fine. We really appreciated access to snorkel and beach gear and the washer dryer.
Like everyone else who has written, we hope to come back and probably stay a little longer.
Our favorite sunset was down at the refuge park by the ocean. I'm sorry that I don't have the name of it handy, but you'll find out about it. Be sure to go.
We're grateful for having discovered this beautiful place.
Mahalo, please do return! We appreciate how nicely you left the unit and appreciate your kind review. Blessings Nancy and Greg
